Iraq post-Saddam pre-ISIS showed us that policing with help of surgical airstrikes is perfectly acceptable western doctrine. Of course, there could be Fallujah in the USA, where something heavier have to be used to restore the union of the states.

Hopefully they will find a way to prevent that, and don't turn into the first truly communist country.

I think the post saddam "policing" was just military action with the euphemism of "policing". More general boobery in the way the US ran the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If your police needs CAS, you are not policing. Generals and Politicians were calling units "police" and saying they are performing policing operations cuz its sounds better to say that as opposed to admitting army infantry are having running gun battles in the capital. 

I am thinking policing in the sense of keeping the general order and deterring crime. Police having interaction with the public who report crime and LE takes action. Police working in conjunction with the judicial system. Not heavily armed convoys with "police" stenciled on their vehicles rumbling through the streets trolling for contact.

IMO the commandoization of police in the wars on terror represent failure. It reflects an unstable society with a ruling class that is fearful and doesn't trust its citizenry. Yes, I wonder and worry about where policing in the USA is headed.

A lot of USian LE has CAS training in the form of aviation spotters but also helisnipers. Fedgov has non-DOD helos with door guns. Most LE special ops already train with IR strobes and designate with PEQs. Almost all LE has comms that will talk to rotary wing. Drone ops is very common at fed and state. It's not all that big a step to get Forward Controllers into place. 

The justification for all this used to be Jihad Joe. Now it is Right Wing White Supremacist Militias. It is all about defending the nomenklatura and their special priveleges from the unwashed.

DOJ and DHS has minimal 'anti crime' effect. They are primarily there to defend the interests of the gasudarsvenoi.
