pixy
The Magach 4 is seemingly missing from history with the only evidence of its existenss being an old report from 1982 which talks about the syrian military capturing a magach 4 loaded with M111 Hetz ammunition, the magach 4 is even missing from wikipedia and barely has any photos of it online, i personally only know of one actual example of it which sits in the Kubinka tank musuem inside Russia
Mighty_Zuk
The naming convention is not consistent. There was no Magach 1, or 2. There was the Magach 3 which was the M48A3 with modifications including primarily a 105mm gun. As you can tell, it's the A3 suffix of the M48 that resulted in the name Magach 3. Similarly, the M48A5's A5 suffix is the reason for naming the followup the Magach 5. There was no Magach 4. Later came the Magach 6, based on the M60 through M60A3. And after that came the Magach 7 whose name is not derived from the American name, rather a Magach 6 + 1, as Magach tanks were no longer imported and the army made the switch to Merkavas. So did Magach 3s, gunned with the 105, become Magach 5s upon being up gunned?

According to the following extract, the Magach 1 is the local designation for the M48A1 and the Magach 2 is the local designation for the M48A2C. The Chieftain tanks used for trials were apparently called "Knight" for added secrecy. Is that translation incorrect?
