Facebook purge of Conservatives

Yesterday, a long time member of this grate site, a Veteran, was informed that his Facebook account would be purged, all posts removed, all likes taken back, all Memes deleted.  His memory would be salted and poisoned.   His right of Centre POV was considered dangerous.

We live in interesting times to say the least.

Hmmm, doesn't that make Fakebook an editor then? responsible for all the content and such?

And they don't GaF since they are in position to leverage whole industries by the power of marketing.

Trust-buster 2.0 needed ASAP.

No it doesn't, section 230 gives them the right to moderate content.  It's the same right that this place has.  Plus I thought all the conservatives on FB had moved over to Parler and MeWe.

That won't happen, they're working hand in hand with The Party, their survival as companies depends on how well they serve The Party.  For its part The Party needs tech to perpetuate its endeavor toward authoritarianism.  It's a symbiotic relationship which grows more powerful with each passing day.

So they can "edit" like a newspaper but can't be sued like a newspaper. If only a newspaper filed a lawsuit on the grounds of unfair competition or whatever the concept is called in English.

Just how crazy Fb is.

A friend posted a photo of her father and her young son doing some painting. Never got a reason for why she was given a "vacation" and the photo removed. Another person I know got a vacation for having the word "ass" in his text.

Algorithms out of their depth!

Recently my FB account was blocked twice because of Covid related irreglarities and I was asked to upload pictures of myself to confirm my ID. Never mind wondering what one has to do with the other. I uploaded pictures of the Penguins of Madagascar and the account was unblocked.

Now it's blocked because they think it has been hacked* and their unblocking tool fails to work with four different browsers, including Edge and Chrome.

*I can be in Sweden now, Spain the next hour and Greece the third. Clearly a sign of hacking and not the use of a VPN. Or so the algorithm thinks.

It's the pinguins, they give you away... that's why I use a car.

This is likely the cause of the original point of this thread.  None of these big tech companies have actual human moderators going around making these decisions.  They have algorithms that make the call, often poorly, and if one is lucky they can eventually reach a human to possibly overturn it (Google is notorious for this since they took over YT... come across a horror story almost daily of folks having their channels demonetized, cutting off their livelihood, for no apparent reason).

I mean, I highly doubt this FB user referenced in the first post got some notice from FB stating his discussion of limited government, his arguments for original and textual interpretation of the Constitution, or support for traditional family really got him banned.

On the contrary, I'd be curious to know if this person was out there supporting and pushing the notion of the election being stolen.  FB has stated they're going to cut down on such BS... and there's nothing Conservative about pushing that conspiracy theory.

No they edit like forum moderators, maybe not as well as MODERATOR used to on this grate sight but moderators not editors.  The major difference is that newspapers control every aspect of their publication. If something ends up in the paper or on their web page it's because they actively put it there.

As for trying to apply the idea that moderating content turns you into an editor and thus makes you liable for that content section 230 begs to differ.

Protection for “Good Samaritan” blocking and screening of offensive material

(1)Treatment of publisher or speaker

No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.

(2)Civil liabilityNo provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be held liable on account of—
(A)
any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected; or
(B)
any action taken to enable or make available to information content providers or others the technical means to restrict access to material described in paragraph (1).[1]

FB's algorithms are pretty scattershot. I have regular dem voting friends (and one UK ex pat French socialist) who routinely go to "facebook jail". I think I know one person who was ejected off as well. One of those friends literally just got their account unblocked the beginning of this week.

Contrary to some of the first posts to this topic, there does appear to be bipartisan support to breaking up internet monopolies, but it means the people on the far right are going to have to be in bed with the people of the far left. As noted, even Biden has mentioned that 230 needs an overhaul as well. But currently the Democrats are busy running their legislation through Congress because losing the house and the GOP is worried about Dr Suess books and race replacement, so it seems unlikely anything is accomplished until at least after the mid terms. And as I said, it would probably take the far left and far right parts of both parties to come together and agree on something for any of the FANGS to be broken up.
