Ivanhoe Posted April 3, 2021 Author Posted April 3, 2021 Vaguely related; https://news.clearancejobs.com/2021/03/31/army-combat-fitness-disaster-units-refusing-to-take-test-medics-bailing/ Quote The U.S. Army has a readiness problem the likes of which it has not seen since the draft, and one which threatens to undermine the entire institution. This problem is called the Army Combat Fitness Test. The ACFT was designed to improve the physical fitness levels of soldiers. Because it was so poorly planned, however, 84% of women failed it straightaway, and data is scarce as to whether things have improved. This is a big problem because failure of a graded physical fitness evaluation renders a soldier ineligible for promotion, locked out of specialized training that might otherwise improve a soldier’s acumen or skillset, and ultimately, risks seeing them kicked out of the Army entirely. Meanwhile, military medical staff—surgeons, nurses, dentists, optometrists, general physicians—are, sources tell me, eyeing ACFT standards skeptically and planning to exit the Army as soon as possible. (Congress certainly seems to fear this possibility, according to language in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, signed into law earlier this year.) A surgeon can make a lot more money in the private sector than in a uniform. This has obvious, serious implications for military readiness, as an Army without skilled doctors is an Army in serious trouble should a new war suddenly break out. But it gets worse, as a timeline of events will demonstrate. I've had students in class talk about this thing. Its been a CF from the get-go.
Tim Sielbeck Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 They need to bring back the horizontal ladder, run dodge and jump, inverted crawl, pushups, sit ups, two mile run.
Ivanhoe Posted April 4, 2021 Author Posted April 4, 2021 Obama. This stuff brewed up during his 2nd term. Taxpayers pumped in multiple megabucks into Rand Corp studies. They're now on v3.0 of the ACFT, apparently. I've been curious if the deadlift is going to result in more back injuries. Deadlifts make sense as a practical physical ability, but going from bodyweight exercises to throwing heavy iron around by a bunch of amateurs seems risky to me. Of my students, there are really 3 types; gym rats, road rats, and couch potatoes. I am going to speculate that changing the test won't help the couch potatoes.
ex2cav Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 I did a quick search of the army physical fitness test. I read that the exercises were designed to mimic what the soldiers do. Bah! Seems like the creators of this test like their cross-fit. Some of the exercises are just silly.

Col. Matthew Lohmeier has been relieved of his duties pending an investigation after he appeared on a podcast and criticized the rise of Marxism in the United States military. Lohmeier served for 14 years in the U.S. Air Force before joining Space Force among its first officers and recruits. He has written and self-published a book, Irresistible Revolution: Marxism’s Goal of Conquest and the Unmaking of the American Military. He appeared on a podcast, called Information Operation, to discuss the book on May 7. He was relieved of his duties as commander of the 11th Space Warning Squadron at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado on Friday, May 14, by order of Lt. Gen. Steven Whiting. Public affairs made it clear that his comments are the reason his job now hangs in the balance.

Not every office worker or blanket stacker needs to be able to carry a full pack and full fighting order twenty hours a day plus contact drills plus digging a defensive position each night. Are we talking about police actions? Or Punching time clocks to bulk up NATO Commitment dollars in country ? Or being able to handle real combat when the needs require? Because you want logistics folks to handle combat and hard lifting too. Sometimes you can't wait for the nifty lifting machine to be available to move the 150lb snatch block and winch cable. A friend of mine, Rhonda, she was a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, worked hard at, worked up to some level of middling NCO in her unit. A few tours of working on vehicles, recovering stuff, some combat on MSRs and what not broke her physically. She can barely work as a mechanic now and that's all she knows how to do. She's good at it. Mostly she manages now, I know she'd prefer to turn winches. I helped her find a contact maintenance truck so she could work a side gig. But that didn't work out as she can't lay on the ground under a vehicle without being in excruciating pain. She doesn't have any specific combat injuries, just fucked up joints and fucked up back. I don't even think she was ever blown up by an IED. Military OpTempo, even just working on vehicles so that the support trucks can get out to get the guys doing the fighting can be hard and dangerous. Lifting wheels, breaking down tires, pulling engines, working drive lines, that's all hard/heavy work. You don't get to knock off at 5 or wait an hour for specialized equipment to be available. The ones that make it work find a way. And they hurt themselves doing it. What ever is done as "stacking blankets" can be done by contractors. Watering down the PT standards to make for more blanket stackers who are in reality needed to break down combat rims and mount tires by themselves is foolish.

Because military personnel were afraid of being seen as prejudiced, those who knew about Hasan kept quiet. The Pentagon is not looking for potential radicalized personnel in any other group but white people and they are using January 6 as an excuse for what they already wanted to do. The Department of Defense is not looking for Black Lives Matters Marxists, or Antifa, who might be using the the training they acquire for their own purposes.

Ninety percent of military jobs can be done by any moderately physically fit man or woman. I don't see them all being replaced by contractors anytime soon. Nor is that desirable or practical. If a trade actually requires a particular physical capability, then by all means, adjust the PT test for that trade accordingly.

How do you be certain that your less than typically fit as a soldier guy is in a place where that's not a detriment? Most of the time, 99.9 percent of the time, your navy staff aren't called on to do lots of physically fit things. Then ONE time.... If they're all blanket stackers and button pushers and have the physical fitness of an anorak who mostly games, what now?
R011 Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 When did "moderately" start to mean "less than typical"?

And? Does it mean she's as strong and as fit as a man doing the same job? Just because she's trying doesn't mean she can. Granted some smaller folks in the mix will make it more adept when it comes to getting someone into say a confined space to do a critical task. But how many of that range is useful? And again, as has been noted, if the standards are lowered to make it possible for more 1/2 sized folks to enlist, what does that do to the overall capabilities?

Do remember fitness and ability are two different things.
rmgill Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 What is being lauded however isn't fitness, but diversity. Ability and merit aren't what is desired from the left. Do you want little brown skinned dudes in your military such that anyone is taken as a recruit? Or do you want little Brown Skinned Nepalese highlanders who have physical fitness and aptitude to make bloody excellent soldiers? Superficially they may appear the same, but random small dudes from east asia aren't the same as Nepalese highlanders with the Gurun last name (for example) AND who exceed requirements.
EchoFiveMike Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 FFS, anyone who advocates for women as mechanics or other physical tasks is simply a fucking troll, and plainly unserious. I'm 225lbs and 6'2" and a lifetime of this shit has used up the body. It absolutely tears up small men. You suggest women? WTF is wrong with you, troll? And I'll be accused of misogyny. This is why the internet sucks, in real life, you can take the suitable response to liars. S/F....Ken M
