Current President Derangement Syndrome: History, Strains, Epidemiology, Clinical Pathology

Tongue planted firmly in cheek, let's discuss the medical properties of CPDS. 🧐

The disease was first described as Bush Derangement Syndrome (now: BDS-43) by Krauthammer in 2003. However, strains have probably existed since at least 1861 (postulated as Lincoln Derangement Syndrome, LDS-16). The follow-on strain to BDS-43, Obama Derangement Syndrome (ODS-44), was quickly identified from 2008. Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS-45) was first to be clearly shown to manifest both in detractors and supporters of the current president, though that property was suggested for BDS-43 already. The long-anticipated emergence of Biden Derangement Syndrome (BDS-46) might present researchers with the opportunity to observe a new strain from the beginning, though some hold it is a pre-existing variant of ODS-44 (ODS-44b).

The most basic symptoms of CPDS are the compulsory urge to bring up the person and policies of the current president in discussion of any, probably completely unrelated subject, and to obsess over the most minute details of his life and decisions. Previously this was thought to generally manifest as expressions of criticism, however with the wide acknowledgement of a spread in both detractors and supporters, it is now accepted to present as unquestioning veneration, too. The latter may be an early stage before changing to the critical expression after the initial virulent phase, as suggested for BDS-43.

In either case, patients commonly abandon all critical original thought on the subject. A narrowing of topics and vocabulary in conversation has been observed; patients increasingly communicate in a limited number of shared terms and phrases, repeating others' opinions rather than making their own arguments. The effects are a reduction in social contacts and angry episodes which in extreme cases may result in violent behavior. Neuropsychiatric in nature, the disease is spread by mass communication, aggravated by modern infornmation technology, and increasing reclusion may be a natural defense mechanism of the afflicted brain. Patients have been known to withdraw from discussion and news completely if faced with irreconcilable contradiction between their beliefs and real-world events.

Other than such isolation from reinforcing effects, no known treatment currently exists.

Another symptom woth mentioning is Whataboutism. Most CPDS afflicted patients show this behavior at least occasionally if not with regularity.

More than veneration, I would say absolute blindness* to anything remotely negative of your preferred side and an exaltation to the excess of any perceived wrongs of the other side, as well as an adversarial approach to everything (if you are not agreeing with me 100% of the time, you are my enemy).

* reinforces by modern media, which abides by the same rules.

Whoa, 100% agreement seems like a half-hearted commitment. I demand at least 110%!

I propose to term this Fifth Avenue Shot Blindness (FASB) in recognition of the stringent description by Trump [2016]. Other suggested terminology for symptoms:

- Hanging Chad Abrasion [Gore, 2000; Clinton, 2016; Trump, 2020]

Anything less would get people branded as RINO/DINO

First clinical evidence for CPDS changing perception of reality for patients: Reading stories on Biden's China connections may make people look like deer to motorists.

South Dakota AG Was Reading Headlines on ‘Some Conspiracy with Joe Biden in China’ a ‘Minute’ Before He Killed a Man on the Side of a Highway

Matt Naham | Feb 26th, 2021, 11:44 am

The embattled South Dakota Attorney General has blood on his hands—in no small part because the “distracted” driver had his cell phone in hand a “minute” before he hit and killed Joseph Boever on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 14. What was Jason Ravnsborg distracted by on September 12, 2020? The Republican AG had been reading headlines on RealClearPolitics and Just the News about “some conspiracy,” as an investigator put it, involving Joe Biden and China.

Video shows Ravnsborg being grilled on Sept. 30 by Special Agents of the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation about what he was doing in the minutes and seconds before the moment of deadly impact. Ravnsborg’s RealClearPolitics browsing history came up around the 56:00-mark of the interview. That moment is below.

[...]

Around 10:24 p.m., Ravnsborg called 911. He initially claimed that he thought he hit a deer. He did not.

The initial accident report said that the attorney general was not intoxicated but confirmed that he was “distracted” ahead of the crash.

“[Ravnsborg] was traveling westbound on US HWY 14. [Ravnsborg] was distracted. [Ravnsborg] entered the north shoulder while traveling westbound. [Boever] was walking on the north shoulder. [Boever] was struck by [Ravnsborg]. [Boever] was carrying a light. The exact time of crash is still under investigation,” the report stated. “The specific distraction is still under investigation.”

A blood sample wasn’t taken from Ravnsborg until 15 hours after the fatal crash. That sample turned up no alcohol in a toxicology report.

Ravnsborg, after his car was wrecked, drove home that night in a vehicle owned by the Hyde County Sheriff. Boever’s body was found the next day, when Ravnsborg returned to the scene in the vehicle he borrowed. Ravnsborg claimed this was when he realized for the first time that he killed a man.

At one point during the interview, investigators confronted Ravsnborg with the truth that Boever’s reading glasses were recovered from inside the attorney general’s vehicle.

“His face was in your windshield, Jason. Think about that,” an interrogator said. Ravnsborg denied knowing anything about the glasses found in his Ford Taurus.

Ravnsborg faces one count each of careless driving, operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile electronic device and a lane-changing violation. Each of those “Class 2” misdemeanors carries a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and/or a $500 fine. Those charges came down on Feb. 18.

Since then, momentum has grown among South Dakota in favor of Ravnsborg’s impeachment.

The Great Plains states, especially North Dakota/South Dakota, have a really high rate of car accident death. I always wondered why, as there aren't big cities and congestion. The standard excuse I've read is that folks are driving waaay over the limit. But the boredom factor probably adds in also.

I have developed the theory that Ted Kennedy was suffering from Nixon Derangement Syndrome at Chappaquiddick, a notoriously virulent strain of CPDS. The deer-image effect would also explain Dick Cheney shooting a fellow hunter in 2006, but I have a hard time connecting any sort of Presidential Derangement Syndrome to him.

Obama was elected as senator from Illinois the year before (and ran for Prez in '08), Darth Cheney sensed a disturbance in the force......

Isnogud Syndrome, a variant.

Hm, Isnogud Syndrome. It bears investigation.

Then again, the possibility that Cheney was essentially patient zero for ODS-44 two years ahead of Obama's presidency opens intriguing perspectives into the genesis of new CPDS strains. They have to come from somewhere after all; we all know that the usual way is through mutation of existing contagions, with those best adapted to be spread surviving to become dominant.

New presidents also don't just pop up overnight but have public exposure before winning office. It's evident that the respective CPDS strains already circulate during campaign season, but their point of origin is so far unexplained. I suggest that there may be a total of mutations equivalent to the number of public office holders and other personalities with the potential to eventually become POTUS, which may breed early in patients with the political-mental capability to recognize them for this. Success of the individual in pursuing a career towards that end would then create favorable conditions for the new strain to outspread less well-adapted mutations and ultimately become a recognized variant of CPDS.

Chronic narcissisms and foot-in-mouth syndrome.

Common with all leading politicos.

Narcissism is something of a requirement.

Ah, but there are non current-president politicians that seem to trigger much of the same behavioral changes. Karl Rove and Rahm Emanuel come to mind as relatively recent cases, or Wehner and Strauss in the 1970s in Germany. Cheney does seem to be a rather speculative (or at least as a special variant) case of Isnogud Syndrome insofar as he seems to have been indifferent as to who might have been president under him.

It has been said many times before but with the evolution of the imperial presidency and the abrogation of the legislators from actually legislating this is inevitable.  Same with the USSC, if things were being run the way they were designed to do the average citizen wouldn't care much at all about who was president or on the US SC, they would be much more concerned with who their senator and representative was.

Absolutely. The federal government used to be pretty unimporant in the daily lives of Americans. Now that a third of the country wants to badmouth, punish, and control the rest, national politics are going to generate a lot of reaction.

An interesting statistic is the methodologically stable, long run polling series for POTUSes where people are asked if they approve of how the Prez is doing their job.  Notwithstanding significant noise in-term and between presidents, there is a clearly descending time trend.  Unless we postulate that the presidents keep getting worse, it suggests increasing disillusionment, partisanship (arguably) and cynicism.

IIRC, when Tocqueville came to America in the 1830s, he said that for most people, their only contact with the federal government was the postman.

With the long political career of the main subject of BDS-46, it's highly likely to flourish, although many people have a mild version of it related to the strain of BDS-46, called WTFOMS (WTFistheOldManSaying?) People with some mild form of BDS-46 are deeply worried about having to catch KHDS-47.

Based upon observation of several cases over the years I was just pondering whether patients are self-aware of the reduction in their vocabulary, increased repetition of limited in-group language and substitution of pre-fabricated memes etc. for articulated thought, when a completely different question occurred to me: If Trump is elected again, will the connected CPDS strain still be TDS-45, or -47? The former arguably never went away, but an even more virulent mutation can be expected if this should happen. 🤔
