He had Covid but it is unclear how it affected him. Most decorated Portuguese military. He helped create the Portuguese Commandos. I have only read about the Portuguese in 20th century Africa from "Three Sips of Gin." No offense, but he did not seem impressed by the Portuguese army. Probably was regular units. Besides central Portugal above Lisbon and North Portugal, the Islands would resist forcefully, Açores would be defended by USA. Logistics-Geography is an important part of it. lucklucky Posted February 19, 2021 Share Posted February 19, 2021 That coup attempt is still mysterious, at time the Soviet inspired Communists(PCP) had still many other strong competitors. MRPP Maoists, UDP Trostkysts "inspired" by Enver Hoxa the Albanian Communist leader. One argument is that Communist Party(which always followed Moscow orders) let them overreach and was in a wait and see stance because it is certain that PCP Communists were not fully on it. If that is the truth about its origins it worked. From then on PCP(Portuguese Communist Party dominated the extreme left until 2015 when a coalition of those Maoists, Trotskysts converted to a typical modern Marxist left surpassed them with a new party called Left Bloc. One strong context to keep in mind is that Portugal always looked at itself as part of Western Europe. Portuguese socialists were created in West Germany supported by German SPD party and CIA. There is also a certain Donald Rumsfeld(President Ford- chief of staff) that supported the US ambassador Frank Carlucci against the initial defeatist Kissinger attitude. He arranged that Carlucci had a meeting with Ford and Kissinger changed its stance afterwards. The Soviet got the Portuguese colonies so were still winners. The "porker" army in Mozambique was not doing very well by the early to mid 1970s, which might explain Rhodesian contempt for them...but In Angola (ESPECIALLY) and Guinea Bissau they and the locally recruited military forces were doing much better. In fact, one of the reasons Portugal was able to pursue the wars in it's colonies for so long was that much of the military manpower was recruited locally--as I understood things.
