On the way Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 I thoroughly enjoyed the one that I attended and will forever regret missing the Germany ones. Did the New Orleans one happen? Any plans for future I&Is say next year when this Covid crap is hopefully over?
Harold Jones Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 The gulf coast I&I came off, although it was a little more Naval/Airplane centric than previous get togethers we did manage to visit a few of those Grate Iron Beasts. As far as 2020 I&Is go the Canada one was a victim of current events and I personally am taking a wait and see stance regarding travel for the remainder of 2020, especially any that involves spending several hours in a metal tube with 200 or so random strangers. There was some talk of a 2021 Edinburgh to London summer I&I including a stop for Tankfest/Monkey World.
Allan W Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 I'd be up for 2021, but you do realize that Edinburgh to Bovington is a lot of traveling and not an easy (or direct) journey? Anyone interested in the Mucklburgh collection? That's on my list.
Harold Jones Posted June 26, 2020 Posted June 26, 2020 (edited) I was thinking train from Edinburgh to London, then after a few days in London, a train to Wool or Bournemouth. The difficult bit is getting Jami off to Monkey world, but I assume a taxi or something like Uber will take care of that part. It can't be any worse than New Orleans to Orlando or the loop we did in France. I think the big difference is that Trains seem to be a reasonable option for this. Edited to add the Mucklburgh collection looks interesting. So long as we can break up the bushels of swords into manageable bites I'm pretty much down for anything. If tank driving is involved at Bovington, I will be very interested.

DB Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Cosford is good, but even more inaccessible unless you're driving. There is a train halt, but it might be a ghost.
Harold Jones Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Some amount of driving seems to be required for most 'modern' I&Is. Once you throw in international travel you are faced with making the trip worth it for the long distance attendees. Unfortunately the kind of stuff we tend to want to see is rarely clustered around a single metro line.
sunday Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 The Netherlands look like a nice, small place with plenty of history.

Any plans for future I&Is say next year when this Covid crap is hopefully over? New Orleans last year happened. This year seems to be dead as a dodo as far as I&Is go. For 2021 knowing the date as early as possible is key for my employer is as flexible as a locomotive with the handbrake on when it comes to getting leave on short notice.

The picture was hilarious. Wish I was on that one. Hey, what happened to Axel anyway? I haven't seen him on this forum in a while.
On the way Posted August 3, 2020 Author Posted August 3, 2020 Going to be in Europe, Oct/Nov 2022. Booked on a cruise starting in Southampton and ending in Rome. Planning to do the UK museums. If anyone wants to make an I & I out of it, I will be game. P.S. Wife is tagging along.

So, planning to hit the London museums, and then out to the country for Bovington, Duxford. Probably end in Bovington as southampton is not too far away.

London has the Imperial War Museum, the British Army Museum, the RAF Museum and HMS Belfast in addition to all of the other palaces, towers etc. Duxford is worth seeing, but my experience was that Cosford was easier to get to. Rather than staying in Wool, which is the closest town to Bovington, you should consider staying in Poole or Bournmouth. It's a short train ride to Wool, and there is a good selection of hotels. It's about 1.5km from Wool train station to the Mother Tank Museum. Alternatively, you could stay in Southampton, its about a 1 hour train ride to Wool. Bournmouth or Poole would be a nicer stay though IMHO. If you can fit it in, the Royal Navy Museum in Portsmouth is worth seeing. It's an easy trip from London via train.
Markus Becker Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 I need to start planning my holiday for next year. In order to have a chance of attending any I&I I need a timeframe. The UK in October(orNovember)?
Harold Jones Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 The location is fine, I'm afraid October won't work since I owe Jami an anniversary trip to somewhere tropical.
