The CDC already has a test protocol (Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRT-PCR) test that can diagnose COVID-19 in respiratory samples from clinical specimens.

They have it sequenced and in a GenBank for researching.

They've grown it in cell culture and it can be accessed by the scientific community for researching and development of cures

I grew up with some of the public health and infectious diseases folks. My neighbor works at the CDC has not expressed any sort of substantive panic response. Her observation was that the Flu still has a substantially higher rate of death as of yet.

COVID-19 presents issues in that it has a lot of unknowns.

We are going to learn just how fast, and how effectively, measures like these can be rolled out by the world's public health community in the coming weeks and months. A wakeup call to arms for the world in various ways.

We already have them. The difference is a rubber face seal area with an exhalation valve. There's a test fit unit that has a probe for measuring the seal. This of course does not have the filter canister opening that you can test by putting your hand over it like on a Military NBC mask to test fit prior to ABSOLUTELY needing it because alarms are going off. And unlike an organic solvent protection mask, you can't get a whiff of the solvent you're using to know that you need to adjust the fit.

Features worthy of global adoption and standardization, as there will be a need for them, as well as easily understood terminology to describe them.

COVID-19 presents issues in that it has a lot of unknowns.

One of the unknowns being how many people have been infected but because their case was so mild it wasn't reported? The MHM (Mass Hysteria Media) has been reporting hysterical mortality rates ranging from 3%-15% but are utterly failing to report that the overall mortality rate of reported cases is closer to .3%, and falling, when you take out the two outliers, Wuhan, and Iran.

It really depends on the health of the folks infected I suspect. Among North Koreans, I'm sure the mortality is far higher. Among North American Overfeds with lots of work outdoors and lots of stamina...I suspect they'll be fine. It's our old folks that I'm most worried about.

Given the source of the largest dataset, it's hard to actually put a read on it until it's coming out of a 1st world country.

You will be surprised to learn that poverty can actually work for your health, Cuban live long because they can't have bad habits, hence get relatively healthy food, do lots of exercise and smoke little - NKs could be similar.

But is it Keto?

Schumer and Pelosi were going on about how inadequate the money Trump was asking for. Obviously, expecting Trump to dig in his heals and double down on what he requested was the correct amount. Trump made them look stupid as his answer was that he will take all the money they offered.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

0-9, apparently no fatalities. No idea how many in that age bracket confirmed infected, but even statistically there should be a few, even if only due to some underlying comorbidity

It's as if something about the onset of puberty makes the human organism more vulnerable to the virus.

I don't know, but isn't anyone else offended that this virus is so biggoted it only prefers the CIS gendered? When will we as a society learn? Equal treatment for all genders!

In the U.S., this whole thing is overblown, just newsmedia hyping junk. First link off the internet:

What in these statistics makes you think it's overblown?

As you are getting a lot of those numbers from China there is no way to know if they are correct.

One more case in Northern California with unknown vector.

But, right now the biggest impact is the supply chain from China. In China 80% of the factories are back open. But only 30% of the manufacturing workers are back.

I've heard some treatments may cause death. Maybe some of the deaths in China may have been caused by desperate doctors giving experimental drugs to stop the virus but not working or causing worsening.

Japan government wants to close the schools.

TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Thursday that he will request all elementary, junior high and high schools across Japan to close temporarily, starting March 2, as the government tries to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

Abe made the remarks at a meeting of the government's headquarters to deal with the new coronavirus.

While it is up to schools and local governments to decide whether or not to suspend classes, the prime minister's request is likely to result in across-the-board closures. Japanese schools will have their spring break from the middle of March through early April, so the closures will run through that period at least.

As of Thursday, 175 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Japan across 19 prefectures, including Hokkaido, Tokyo, Aichi, and Chiba.

Earlier on Thursday, the northern island of Hokkaido instituted a weeklong closure of all 1,600 public elementary and junior high schools, as the number of confirmed infections had been rising.

Agree that I don't think we have enough information yet about whether overblown is the right word.

I could see patient consent being given in those scenarios as well.

Trump set up Pence to take the fall when the crap hits the fan.

He's given Pence a chance to look good on a national level. If he fails he won't be in a position to take over after Trump. But if he does good he will be golden for a Trump 3rd term. Unlike Obama in the case of Ebola he didn't put a donor lawyer in charge.

BTW, There is a known vector in the northern California case. Right out of Travis AFB. Where they brought infected people from over seas.

The Left is trying to say Trump isn't taking this seriously. I'm old enough to remember when Trump created a CV taskforce and all the Left could do was claim it was too white. That was all the way back in the olden days of January 30th.

He's over reacting because he closed down flights. He's under-reacting because he's not spending 30 billion dollars to be seen spending 30 billion dollars.

Supposedly the above press conference was incoherent...I'm not sure how that is. It's quite clear to me.
