Der Zeitgeist Posted March 9, 2020 Author Posted March 9, 2020 Italy has 366 dead from it, yet, an attitude of complaceny still sits.Any of those dead having died without a serious underlying medical condition? How many people have died in Italy from influenza this year? The differences between the flu and this virus have been explained countless times now. We're well into the third month of this thing. If you still don't get the difference between the seasonal flu and a viral pandemic with no existing immunities in the population and no vaccine for at least 12 months, well, I guess you'll just have to see for yourself. Unfortunately, the virus doesn't care when politicians try to downplay its effects on the Sunday talk shows.

WRW Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 brilliant on the vegan shelf Am in UAE - family working here I actually have a long outstanding cold from Tanzania - occasional cough and also sneeze from the much dust here - almost afraid to go out incase either happens
Soren Ras Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 it's not like the water will stop running from the tap, Expectation is that water and power should continue working, but of course the problem with such assumptions is what happens if for some reason they don't. I stockpiled some extra water, not because I think the water company will stop working, but in mainly case I do run into a supply problem and I won't be able to get a repairman on it in short order. I live in an area with a lot of new construction. A few years back, someone decided you didn't really need to be careful with a backhoe, and of course they hit a water line so our water was out for a few days. Now add people on self quarantine and such a delay is likely to be longer. It won't be a problem if it happens right now, but depending on how much lockdown we are going to see, it could be an issue to get someone to come fix something. So, I see some of the stockpiling more as extra design margin for when Murphy's Law kicks in. --Soren

Jeff Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 Damn that Chinese liberal media making the government go into hysterics and lock down an entire province! How's that Russia collusion conspiracy working out? It's got nothing to do with "liberal media", it has everything to do with hysteria and making money off of hysteria. As for the Chinese, you may trust them and their propaganda, I'm not willing to suspend disbelief, not when we're talking about the same government that still runs reeducation/concentration camps. China is now demanding thanks from the rest of the world for taking one for the team on COVID-19. Good luck with that. Trump called it the Wuhan virus the other day and the media shit a brick about him being racist (Wuhan is a race?) until everyone pointed out all the times the name has been used already and previous virus' and their names. A person attending the GOPAC event has COVID-19 and the Left on social media is overjoyed about all the potential sick and dying conservatives. Ghoulish. Meanwhile, the flu keeps rolling along doing its yearly thing.

Unfortunately, the virus doesn't care when politicians try to downplay its effects on the Sunday talk shows.Since the US has moved from containment to mitigation, this bears consideration. 61,200 people died from influenza in the US last year out of 42.9 million confirmed infected(13.15% of population). That's a 1.4% fatality rate against a virus with a vaccine typically against 3 or 4 strains. So the infection to exposure rate will be low as well. If only 42.9 million Americans are infected with Coronavirus against which containment has been abandoned in place of mitigation, based on age demographics, here is the potential comparison to influenza by the numbers. 0 - 9 - 0 fatalities.10 - 19 1,104 fatalities.20 - 29 1,195 fatalities.30 - 39 1,149 fatalities.40 - 49 2,128 fatalities.50 - 59 7,144 fatalities.60 - 69 17,714 fatalities.70 - 79 23,818 fatalities.80 and up 246984 fatalities. Total pop 326.19 which means if the infection rate of 13.15% in an unvaccinated population using conservative fatality rates from China are used, then this disease is only about 4.53 times as lethal as the influenza last year. I consider these numbers optimistic.

Yeah, this morning, one of the chat shows I listened to noted that 'Don Vito' Cuomo declared an emergency RE: the Corona Virus but at the same time NY State has had at least with 8 thousand cases of the flu without reaction.

See the thread Harold Jones posted for this. It also doesn't tell you anything about the numbers of additional deaths that happen for reasons other than COVID when your entire country's intensive care system is entirely saturated with treating severe pneumonia cases reliant on ventilators.

I did not look at systemic health system failures due to oversaturation of ICU resources, because that would be beyond what I can predict using known factors. I did an apples to apples numerical distribution with many disclaimers throughout. This is primarily to counter the arguments about the flu creating real problems as a basis for implying Covid19 should not be a concern since it isn't widespread. It just isn't widespread yet. I bet the citizens of Italy wish they could turn back the clock a month ago when they had the same mindset. Regards, Brasidas
BansheeOne Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 Got the first two dead in Germany, an 89-year-old woman in Essen hospitalized last Tuesday with diarrhoea and blood sugar problems who died of pneumonia today, and a 78-year-old man with multiple pre-existing conditions in the county where the NRW outbreak originated who went to hospital with symptoms on Friday and died of heart failure. A 60-year-old German tourist also died in Egypt yesterday after having been hospitalized with a fever on Friday, the first COVID death in Africa. I guess we were somewhat overdue already with 1,176 cases reported as of this afternoon.

You only need the virus rampaging through a single nursing home and the numbers don't look so great anymore. We also were lucky that most infections so far were among ski travellers from Italy who were comparatively young with very mild forms of infection so far. This will all change in the coming weeks as the virus spreads out among the general population.

Tim the Tank Nut Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 by the same token a fire in a nursing home would cause a spike in deaths reported.Look, there's a risk and there is danger. Screaming about fire in the theater is more acceptable when the theater is actually on fire but by the same token over-reaction on Covid-19 is certainly going to bear some serious risks as well. There is a very real undercurrent of "the sky is falling" and if you keep that up enough it may become a self fulfilling prophecy.Lastly, nice going with the globalization economy... (sarcasm)

There is a very real undercurrent of "the sky is falling" and if you keep that up enough it may become a self fulfilling prophecy. It's not about screaming "fire", it's about preparing for things that are going to happen. The various countries currently affected and the different ways they are dealing with it can provide crucial information about things that will work and things that won't work or are counterproductive. What doesn't help is sticking your head in the sand while trying to convince yourself that it's just like the flu and it will all get better in a few weeks.

BansheeOne Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 Well, Italy just locked down the entire country. Coronavirus: Italy extends strict quarantine measures nationwide 7 minutes ago Italy is extending its strict coronavirus quarantine measures, which include a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that people would only be permitted to travel for work or family emergencies. He said the measures, which come into effect on Tuesday, were to defend the most fragile members of society. Italy's coronavirus death toll jumped on Monday by 97 to 463. It is the worst-hit country after China In a televised address on Monday, Mr Conte said that the best thing for the citizens of Italy was to stay at home. He added that all sporting events - including football matches - were being suspended nationwide. The restrictions are similar to those earlier applied to the worst affected Lombardy region, and 14 other provinces.https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51810673
