Handshaking and hugging may become a lot less common here, can't say as I would miss either much.

Hugging has become seriously commponplace around here in the last years. No idea where that came from.

mid 70s and into 80s, Psychos, Ökos, belated Hippies, Bagwan followers and the like. About the same time men started getting one ear pierced and sport a small earring.

Twas the beginning of the end.

I forgot knitting . . . and crying

A reporter came back through NYC after reporting from the worst spots in Italy... and not one time coming through customs was anything asked about where she had been or any measure taken to see how she was doing. I was under the impression such measures were now common everywhere... guess not.

After my 7 hour layover in Hong Kong I was prepared to be quarantained in London, but it was just the usual laser gun to the head, and off you go. Maybe because I didn't go through border control since I was headed for Germany, so, someone else's problem. Maybe because Hong Kong doesn't count as mainland China, anyway. And to the German border control, I was coming from London, so there wasn't even a laser gun pointed at anyone from the plane. I understand that the governments don't weant to rock the boat of the economy too much but there's no way how that's going to contain the virus, or prevent a pandemic.

And of course, South Tyrol is another major hub of virus distribution because, Italy, and non-stop after ski parties. Big surprise, that.

although too much action, and too many people about. I could watch just him for hours milling around the city and getting his place set up. Cool bikes in his garage and in the stadium chase.

Even if they don't do much for filtering air, masks at least hinder people from touching their own face. :P

I just read through the whole thread, and it's refreshing and reassuring to read (fairly) calm, sensible discussion. Jim Martin is in full panic mode over on Facebook.

It seems the most realistic assessment is that the virus is out, and the practical defense is good personal hygiene and maximize health practice.

Ended up at Costco late Friday night and saw shortages of toilet paper and various sanitizer/wipe products. Bottled water was in short supply, although on the side where I parked, there were shrinkwrapped pallets of bottled water awaiting movement into the store, and a few people eyeing them.

The area with giant cylinders of Tang remained barely touched, interestingly. Generation M apparently will not drink that under any circumstances.

Utilities ought not to be a problem; there should be extra effort to keep them running.

Maybe we'll finally get some proper panic buying here now; on Saturday I was disappointed to find no empty shelves at the supermarket across the street from me. :D

Well, what a difference a week makes. Made pancakes for lunch yesterday, saw that I was running low on flour and thought I should get some new one if possible. Sure enough, the shelves for pasta, rice and flour looked like the DDR had made a comeback; in fact there was a note they were currently only selling up to four packs per customer of certain stuff like flour and sugar "due to circumstances". Saw a guy with five sixpacks of water bottles in his cart and thought WTF, are you preparing for the zombie apocalypse?

I mean I, too, have doubled my usual stocks of daily consumables, which among other things means I'm buying another pack of anything as soon as the last bottle of the first of two is going into the fridge. But even that is already luxury stockpiling just so I don't have to change my habits without bothering anyone else to supply me if I should get quarantined at home for two weeks - it's not like the water will stop running from the tap, and unlike the chlorinated stuff in much of the US, it's actually readily drinkable without feeling like you swallowed a swimming pool. I think people are falling for global pop culture memes.

Meanwhile Italy is going to seal off Lombardy and 14 other regions to cut off traffic between them. They're also bringing back doctors from retirement, hiring additional health staff and increasing the number of intensive care beds. Saw some expert warn here we should do the latter, too, to prepare for a comeback of the disease in fall after a decline in summer.

Quite a difference, then, between the UFE (Unified Frankistan Empire) and the US of A. The only product aisle I saw decimated was bottled water; beer coolers were thinned but serviceable. I picked up a sixer of Deschutes porter, so am properly prepared.

I guess that Americans are assuming that municipal water and power are doomed, or at least that Youtube will be offline such that they won't have Gordon Ramsey yelling them how to make chateaubriand.

Amusingly, the better supermarket in the ghetto part of town had "bone-in lamb breasts" (i.e. lamb ribs) in stock. Wondered why, until I realized that Drunk Patrick's Day is in a week and a half.

How many empty shelves are due to panic buying at that store or panic buying elsewhere draining the supply chain for resupply of normal purchasing and how much is due to production stops in China and elsewhere?

Or watching a movie and then looking at his watch and panicking about how late it was and I'm wondering why he's so upset until people start attacking him on the mad drive home.

The media induced hysteria will end up doing more global damage than this virus could ever do. In just the USA alone we lose 10s of thousands annually to influenza, compared to that Covid-19 is like a pimple on a gnats ass. Were it not for the hysteria created and perpetuated by the media across the globe, Covid-19 would get no more attention from the mass populace than some articles in medical journals.

How do you explain Italy then? Are these people clogging up the ICUs just for fun?

I got a slight fever and aching in my joints. Have not have a fever for 5 years. Problem is at work we have 15 consultants that come and go every week and they all from countries that have cases. I have a feeling the project is going under:)

At least when I tell them tomorrow I am sure they will tell me to stay home 2 weeks and work from there.

Italy is sure to default on its debt, luxury goods market in Northern Italy is dead , and so is tourist season.

Italy has 366 dead from it, yet, an attitude of complaceny still sits.

How's that Russia collusion conspiracy working out?

It's got nothing to do with "liberal media", it has everything to do with hysteria and making money off of hysteria. As for the Chinese, you may trust them and their propaganda, I'm not willing to suspend disbelief, not when we're talking about the same government that still runs reeducation/concentration camps.

Any of those dead having died without a serious underlying medical condition? How many people have died in Italy from influenza this year?

We've been through that point already.

Hoping these next 2 weeks turn out to be precautionary. Please keep us informed of your experience.
