My unit had a live performance of something like this.  The instructor tried to use a fake heavy Russian accent and wore a Russian uniform.

PC speak for it is "hazing" and is well established practice in some western militaries also.

No doubt, but those Western Armies had the advantage of long established NCO systems for keeping it under control. The Soviets certainly had NCOs, but as they were also conscripts  with less institutional memory, they had real difficulties keeping a lid on it. It seemingly caused real issues in morale.

I digress and it was probably a mistake to bring it up on this thread, but is a fascinating if disturbing subject.

It is usually those "well established NCO system" that were problem, both east and west. There is a local saying "Hated as Austrian corporal", and it has nothing to do with Hitler, but with "long established NCO system" that made those NCOs symbols of the conscript oppression. While some militaries tried to eliminate that problem, others let it exist, "because it was good for a team spirit".

Locally, we were lucky that such antics were squished ruthlessly after WW2, and were also not popular before, being mostly former A-H NCOs baggage.
