The man certainly deserved having a ship named after him. But when the most decorated Marine in history (Lewis "Chesty" Puller) gets a frigate instead, I chalk it all up to PC garbage.

A retroactive upgrade of his Navy Cross to the Medal of Honor would have probably been as appropriate a gesture, if not more so.

This is a lot better than naming one for a politician of any party, but Miller's name should have been given to a destroyer ot frigate. Naming the upcoming FFG(X) class of frigates for him would have been nice.

Perhaps, though, this will be a new naming convention. Anything to avoid a USS Clinton or Pelosi.

That would have neither prevented a USS Clinton, nor a USS Obama. ;)

Which shows there's hope for the USN after all.

Of course, given the events of PH, it would have been perfect to name a battleship after him, but sadly...

Racial pandering. An honorable man, he should have a destroyer or frigate named for him; making radical exceptions to the naming convention just fosters more racial animosity.

No matter what "they" do, the USS Obama will be known as the African Queen, and the Clinton will be the Bubba or possibly the Willie J, or some minor variations on those concepts. S/F....Ken M

This. The man did good. But I don't think he (or any politician) merits being named an aircraft carrier.

Please bring back Lexington, Yorktown, etc names for carriers.

A frigate? Where do you put the bayonet on that?

While African Americans make up only about 7% of the officers in the USN (with close to only about 5% in the top ranks), they make up about 20% of E1 to E9. If counting all minors, they make up about 40% of seamen. It could have pilitical pandering in it, but there might be a desire to give more to that bulk of work horse seamen in the USN.

Miller is better than Clinton, Obama, or Trump anyway.

USS Miller (FF-1091), originally (DE-1091) was a Knox-class destroyer escort in the United States Navy. She was named for Cook Third Class Doris "Dorie" Miller, who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions at the attack on Pearl Harbor

The Navy should probably upgrade his Navy Cross based on how much PR they are extracting from his name and legacy alone.

USS Donald. J. Trump on a carrier would be art (of the deal) at a high form in various ways.

From feisbuk: In terms of merit, the class can be ordered as Enterprise, Miller, JFK and Ford. Both JFK and Miller should have been DD names - there was a Joseph Kennedy, so one ship can honor 2 brothers. Carriers should have been named after their historical counterparts (ie Intrepid, Ranger, Lex, Sara) battles, or really prominent Americans: Washington, Lincoln, Franklin. My 2 cents

But as was pointed to me, life ain't perfect.

Indeed, while he was a very brave man, other men just as brave were given DD, DE and FF ships. It's certainly no worse than many other names given but I don't see why the navy decided to go from an Arleigh Burke to a CVN.

CVN-82 USS William J. Clinton

CVN-83 USS George W. Bush

Among other issues, Clinton's DoD gave us the "Last Supper" and Bush's gave us "Transformation."

Meanwhile, Lexington, Saratoga, Ticonderoga, Hornet, Kitty Hawk, Langley, and other names are unused.

All of the nuclear-powered aircraft carriers have been named after people, with the exception of CVN80 USS Enterprise, which has been named after CVN65, the US Navy's first-ever CVN (CVN80's name was revealed during CVN65's deactivation ceremony).

Location names would probably be used for helicopter carriers (lately, they've been using historical estate names), LHA/LHD amphibious assault ships (my money would be on this; more specifically on new members of the Wasp or America classes) or landing platform docks. As for Ticonderoga, it's possible it'll stay off the board until the last of the Tico cruisers gets stricken off the Naval Register (nine currently still active, and thirteen others decommissioned and in reserve).

As attached as I am to the old naming conventions, I keep remembering Hyman Rickover's comment about naming subs: "Fish don't vote"

:D

I always think of Rickover as the Elon Musk of submarines. Without the cocaine naturally.

He also happens to be the namesake of the only 688 sub not to have been named after a city or town.
It could be worse; there are classes whose naming conventions are all over the place. *glares at Seawolf (fish, state and president) and Virginia (states, Hyman Rickover again, fishes, two Secretaries of the Navy, cities/towns and rivers!)*

One thing to do would be to have a long list of names you intend to use for ships, and lock them down years in advance, long before they get assigned to ships. That way you cant get last minute lobbying, and the USS Joe Biden may turn out to be a Tugboat or a Hospital ship. At that point you will find naming warships after Politicians  is going to drop off a cliff.

Or do what the RN has done with the 'Inspiration class'. Group a lot of really cool names with a history behind them, just to get them back at sea.

https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news/2021/may/19/20210519-inspiration-class

Each name has been selected to represent key themes and operations which will dominate and shape the global mission of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines: carrier operations (Formidable); operational advantage in the North Atlantic (Bulldog); forward deployment of ships around the globe to protect UK interests (Active); technology and innovation (Venturer); and the Future Commando Force (Campbeltown).

HMS Bulldog was the ship that stole the Enigma Machine and codebooks off U110. Campbeltown after the Wicks Clemson expended in the raid on St Nazarre. And HMS Active? Erm... last RN ship to sink a Frenchman perhaps?

Maybe the Type 21 - FI combatant, didn't sink, name is suitably apt and isn't of a type that might be wanted for an actual ship (like any of the city names).

Yeah, apparently it was because Active had been so effective with fire support at San Carlos I think. Which is ironic then they are giving the ship a 57mm (not that I think its a bad idea inherently).
