Uss Birmingham Cl62 Combat Damage

Recommended Posts

There was some similar documents on Archive.org of a British carrier that had taken bomb hits. Might be worth a trawl if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I was reading about the Princeton explosion earlier. Birmingham was either very lucky or very unlucky, depending on how you look at it.

Her crew was at general quarters when it took hits at the almost maximum extremities of the hull, putting almost nobody at immediate risk. The second bomb 'hit' was an aerial detonation over the after main battery turret, leaving superficial damage. At least that's my take from a quick reading.

It is a testament to the design as well, especially with over 1200 crew aboard. It is the sum of many encounters like these with the USN, in which the aircrew lost versus damage inflicted ratio was unfavorable, that led to drastic measures by Japan.

The Mark 8 torpedo that hit Belgrano's bow apparently did not cause as much damage as the one that hit amidships. The casualty toll taken by that one was sobering.

CL hulls appear to have been packed with crew. Birmingham was lucky.

Belgrano's casualty list was run up because the torpedo hit the crew dining area with 274 out of the 323 KIA dying then and there.
