Iran announces arrests over downing of plane that killed 176

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) Iran's judiciary said Tuesday arrests have been made for the accidental shootdown of a Ukrainian passenger plane that killed all 176 people on board just after takeoff from Tehran last week.

The announcement came amid an upswell of anger and protests by Iranians in recent days over the downing of the jetliner last Wednesday and apparent attempts by senior officials in Iran to cover-up the cause of the crash.

Iran, which initially dismissed allegations that a missile had brought down the plane, acknowledged only on Saturday - three days after and in the face of mounting evidence - that its Revolutionary Guard had shot down the plane by mistake as the force braced for a possible military confrontation with the United States.

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said "extensive investigations have taken place and some individuals are arrested." His statement on the judiciarys website did not say how many individuals had been detained or name them.

Iran's president on Tuesday also called for a special court to be set up to probe the incident.

"The judiciary should form a special court with a ranking judge and dozens of experts", President Hassan Rouhani said in a speech televised in Iran. "This is not an ordinary case. The entire the world will be watching this court."

Rouhani called the incident "a painful and unforgivable mistake" and promised that his administration would pursue the case by all means.

"The responsibility falls on more than just one Person", he said, adding that those found culpable "should be punished".

"There are others, too, and I want that this issue is expressed Honestly", he said, without elaborating.

[...]

Rouhani called the governments admission that Iranian forces shot down the plane a "first good step".

He added that Iranian experts who retrieved the Ukrainian planes flight recorder, the so-called black box, have sent it to France for analysis.

So they found out who offers the best value in the "expendable x credibly responsible" formula?

I would love it if Donald Trump is the man that brings peace to the middle east. For one thing I would be proved wrong, and secondly, it would be really funny.

I dont think it likely, but then I thought a washed up Hollywood actor was going to cause WW3, so what the hell do I know. :D

I dunno, Stuart...what sort of bilge were they feeding you in the press to make you think "Ron The Bomb" would cause WW3? My outlets were spewing it out too, but alternate viewpoints taught me otherwise.

Well, less what was said about him, than what he did. There was for example this..

There was also this.

What we know now is the was a man with a plan, who had a far more subtle mind than he let on. He really did think he could run the legs off the Soviet Union, and he did. But as with flight 752 being a price for confrontation, KAL007 was the price paid for confrontation for the Soviets. Looking back, it was worth the price. At the time, I was about 10 years old and increasingly worried. Everyone was, best I recall.

Reagan ended up being right. Could it have gone the other way? Well depending on how you look at Able Archer, perhaps it could. We assume because things went the way they did, they were always going to. I think there was far more luck involved than either his critics or plaudits credit him with.

How your memory seems to twist events continually surprises me.

The media outrage about Reagan's joke was that it was inappropriate, not that it was likely to result in WW3. Everyone knew it was supposed to be a mike test joke.

It was not that the remark was likely to start WW3. The point was that a man reckless enough to make jokes about starting WW3 was probably not the man we ideally wanted as leader of the western world.

I was 10 years of age at the time. I dont claim to have perfect recall of this period, but I remember very well how the 1983/84 period made me feel, and that was scared shitless for the most part. Yes, much of the criticism made against Reagan was wholly unfounded, and yes, our political left were hysterical over him and his policies. But that he completely changed tack in 1983/84, partly because of the testimony of Oleg Gordievsky, suggests to me that if Reagan changed his mind, even he was scared of where things were going.

Ive read enough on this period since to realise that whilst my perception of Reagan was wholly flawed, forgivable in a Child I think, my perception of the danger we were in was not.

Trump and his minions are changing the reasons for the attack on the General. They are also not mentioning the failed attack on another 'target'.

The Pensacola attack that killed 3 sailor is know called a terrorist attack. Strange that SA is not designated a terrorist country like Iran

Probably for the same reason that Canada and the UK aren't, despite having their own home grown radicals. It goes to the direction that the government goes with the whole terrorism bent. Now, if you start getting more liberal radical type terrorists, and you keep electing substitute drama teachers, we might have to re-think our stance on Canada. ;-)

Probably the thing that got that videodrome headache going. Sort of like that caffeine withdrawal headache people get.

Is that like the withdrawal Trumphumpers get, when they don't have his orange leg to pleasure themselves on? :)

Two missiles, those poor devils didn't stand a chance.

I'm a little vague on this, but I'm understanding that the airliner didn't make it's "threatening" turn until after having been struck by the first missile.

Seems to be the case.

If you look at the flightradar 24 link, it certainly made a turn, but it was in line with the airway that everyone else was using. All other airliners on the same track made exactly the same turn.

It MIGHT also have made one after the transponder failed, but as the only information we have for that is from the guys who fired the shots and subsequently liked about it for 3 days, It must be treated with some suspicion.

Was it a turn or a departure from controlled flight?

New video has turned up, showing the 2 missiles launched and impacting the aircraft.

It does appear to show the aircraft turning, but only after both missiles hit. Its impossible to tell at this point if there was even an alive aircrew on board.

Too many people assume competence on the part of the Iranians. Even the most competent military in the world shoots down Iranian airliners and collides with commercial shipping and pisses in bottles in the CIC to make sure its manned, which doesnt matter when the bridge wont talk to them. This is a third world country with a leadership that is stuck in the circa 1600s mentality wise, their subordinates are trained to be loyal above all else because historically the greatest threat to a regime like that is coup.

They just screwed up, simple as. Russians trying to come up with a way to make it the pilots fault not withstanding.
