On reflection, they might have done better to have married a Hapsburg. The Hapsburgs and Wittelsbachs have turned out to be fairly cool since their families got fired from Imperial and Royal duties. Better than the Hohenzollerns, who seem to have cleaned up their act since the 1940s.

The Hohenzollerns are still around?
Ssnake
Sure. Waiting for the day that the German people demand the reinstation of monarchy. LOL. Any minute now.

They've no politcal power or official status any more, but they aren't destitute.
Stuart Galbraith
I always wonder why the Russians never restored the Monarchy. On present evidence they couldnt have done any worse. Heck, they could have had Prince Michael of Kent. He even looks how the Tsar would have looked if he made it to 80.

I thought they had pretty well died off since they could not inbreed with other Royal families... Looks like the Hapsburgs have had a serious outbreeding program. No more cousin marriages. You know i have thought the same thing, I wonder why Putin has not brought back the Tsar as a figurehead. He could be the Grand Duke Vladimir of Putin. Stuart Galbraith
Essentially, in most important respects, he is the Tsar. He even projects a wholly implausible relationship with the Russian church, kind of emulating what the Tsar used to do. And of course, he starts unwinnable wars too. Stuart Galbraith
Yes, I can't bring myself to watch it. I imagine most people will feel the same way. I've just endured CNN urinating over the Royal Family all day, because a very aging person working at Buckingham Palace made a Black British citizen deeply uncomfortable by insisting on learning where she was from. Unacceptable clearly, but I draw the line at their interpretation that it implies the entire Royal Family is Racist. They do remember who ended slavery, right? Whose navy it actually was? I know I'm a lefty, but these broad stroke interpretation of singular events is really beginning to seriously piss me off.

Mike1158
I get the feeling that all the 'customs' etc of the RF will be under scrutiny now. The POI is in her 80's and still running around 'doing' something that has no requirement. Basically there to be smug, self important and get on a high horse from time to time. That she is less aware of what the current form is, comes as no surprise, 85 years of dotage. As is usual the news function follows the "The more hot air and indignation the better for the ratings" bull. Some years ago a group of soldiers was met by reporters a beeb muppet amongst them. The muppet walzed over to the first squaddie and stuck a camera and microphone in his face asking the question, "How does it feel losing friends in combat over there"? The POI is going to be shamfaced and out of the role that gave her something to get up for in the AM. She will likely die quite quickly, as happens when elderly people have no motivation, prbably a lot of shame too. Was she correct in what she said? No, not a chance. Thing is, how many of us are perfect now, let alone at 85 years of dotage? I sincerely hope somebody button holes all the indignant people and reporters when/if they get to 85 and still in employment (Unpaid apparently). Murph
Looks like the Netflix special on Her Sublime highness Markle, and her husband will be pretty devestating towards William and Kate, as well as the rest of the "Firm" that kicked Mr, Markle to the curb. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11494699/Tory-MP-Bob-Seely-launches-blistering-attack-Harry-Meghan-Netflix-show.html
DB
if I'm asked where I come from, I say "Hertfordshire". It happens quite a lot with people when you first meet them, and my accent is "generic southern", so doesn't place me. I don't kick up a fuss and piss and whine about it. If she'd just answered the fucking question, there would have been no story. (The answer might have been "Lewisham" (or any other likely urban UK borough) and the old biddy wouldn't have batted an eye.

Then version of the story I heard was that the old Lady received an answer much like that, but then insisted on knowing where in Africa the person came from.
