Quote Maine mass shooting suspect found dead Published 5 hours ago By Holly Honderich in Maine and Max Matza BBC News A man suspected of killing 18 people in a shooting in Maine has been found dead after a three-day manhunt, police say. Robert Card, 40, was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, Maine Commissioner of Public Safety Michael Sauschuck said. The news comes hours after police lifted a stay-at-home order for the normally quiet community. Among the dead are a grandfather, a talented young bowler, and four deaf locals, ranging in age from 14 to 76. "The suspect in Wednesday night's shootings has been located and is deceased," the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook. At a news conference at Lewiston City Hall, Maine Governor Janet Mills said the body was found in Lisbon, near where the shooting occurred. [...] The attack happened on Wednesday night at a local bar and a bowling alley in the small town of Lewiston. Police responded to reports of shooting at two locations, a restaurant called Schemengees, and Just-In-Time Recreation, a bowling alley, which are about four miles (6.5km) apart. Seven people were killed at the bowling alley, eight at Schemengees Bar and Grille, and three were pronounced dead at local hospitals. On Friday night, before the news that Card had been found, members of the local deaf community, who were deeply affected by the tragedy, gathered over Zoom for a virtual vigil. Quote Pittsburgh synagogue gunman will be sentenced to death for the nation’s deadliest antisemitic attack By PETER SMITH and MICHAEL RUBINKAM Updated 5:17 AM MEZ, August 3, 2023 PITTSBURGH (AP) — The gunman who stormed a synagogue in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community and killed 11 worshippers will be sentenced to death for perpetrating the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history, a jury decided Wednesday. Robert Bowers spewed hatred of Jews and espoused white supremacist beliefs online before methodically planning and carrying out the 2018 massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue, where members of three congregations had gathered for Sabbath worship and study. Bowers, a truck driver from suburban Baldwin, also wounded two worshippers and five responding police officers. The same federal jury that convicted the 50-year-old Bowers on 63 criminal counts recommended that he be put to death for an attack whose impacts continue to reverberate nearly five years later. He showed little reaction as the sentence was announced, briefly acknowledging his legal team and family as he was led from the courtroom. A judge will formally impose the sentence Thursday. Jurors were unanimous in finding that Bowers’ attack was motivated by his hatred of Jews, and that he chose Tree of Life for its location in one the largest and most historic Jewish communities in the U.S. so that he could “maximize the devastation, amplify the harm of his crimes, and instill fear within the local, national, and international Jewish communities.” They also found that Bowers lacked remorse. [...] Bowers’ lawyers never contested his guilt, focusing their efforts on trying to save his life. They presented evidence of a horrific childhood marked by trauma and neglect. They also claimed Bowers had severe, untreated mental illness, saying he killed out of a delusional belief that Jews were helping to cause a genocide of white people. The defense argued that schizophrenia and brain abnormalities made Bowers more susceptible to being influenced by the extremist content he found online. The prosecution denied mental illness had anything to do with it, saying Bowers knew exactly what he was doing when he violated the sanctity of a house of worship by opening fire on terrified congregants with an AR-15 rifle and other weapons, shooting everyone he could find. The jury sided with prosecutors, specifically rejecting most of the primary defense arguments for a life sentence, including that he has schizophrenia and that his delusions about Jewish people spurred the attack. Jurors did find that his difficult childhood merited consideration, but gave more weight to the severity of the crimes. [...] Bowers, who traded gunfire with responding officers and was shot three times, told police at the scene that “all these Jews need to die,” according to testimony. Ahead of the attack, he posted, liked or shared a stream of virulently antisemitic content on Gab, a social media platform popular with the far right. He has expressed no remorse for the killings, telling mental health experts he saw himself as a soldier in a race war, took pride in the attack and wished he had shot more people. German police said Thursday that a 15-year-old student had been shot dead at a special education school in the southwestern town of Offenburg. The suspected shooter, another 15-year-old student at the school, was detained during a large-scale police operation. He was remanded in custody on suspicion of manslaughter, police and prosecutors said. The attack is said to have taken place in the suspect's 9th grade class, Germany's dpa news agency reported. At the time of the shooting, 180 students were evacuated from the premises and picked up by their parents. Police suspect 'personal motive' According to the investigators, the attacker is said to have entered a classroom at lunchtime, approached the classmate sitting inside and opened fire with a handgun. The victim later died of the wound in hospital. Police and prosecutors believe the suspect acted alone and said initial findings revealed a previous relationship between the alleged perpetrator and victim. One was reported to have threatened to use a gun. Hamburg police on Wednesday said they had arrested four children and seized a pair of "apparent toy weapons" after a major operation at a school in the Blankenese district of Hamburg. Students were evacuated from the premises following reports that two young people at the school had threatened to use a gun. Police spokesperson Holger Vehren told reporters that special forces completed a search of the building and found no trace of the perpetrators. But later on Wednesday, police said they were called to another "threat," not far from the school, that resulted in the arrest of four children — two 12-year-olds, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old. "It later emerged that one of the 12-year-olds and the 13-year-old could also be responsible for the crime" at the school, said police, adding that officers also "seized two apparent toy weapons." What do we know about the incident? Tactical forces were deployed to the school in the Blankenese district shortly before 11 a.m. local time after "indications of a threat situation," police said. The German mass-circulation daily newspaper Bild had reported that two young people, possibly students, had barricaded themselves into a classroom with one of them threatening that they would use a gun. A female teacher was said to have been threatened. The school was evacuated, and parents were asked to head to a nearby barracks where the pupils were taken. BansheeOne Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Rapidly mounting death toll being reported from an apparent Texas University-style rooftop sniper attack at Charles University, Prague. Shooter also reported dead, tentatively identified as a history student at the institution. Quote Czech Republic: Fatal shooting at Prague university 2 hours ago Czech police say the shooter has been "eliminated," and that there were several dead and wounded at the university in the capital, Prague. Czech police reported on Thursday a shooting incident at a downtown educational facility in the capital, Prague, that killed and injured an unspecified number of people. Police said over 15 people were killed by the shooter and at least 25 people were injured. [...] What else do we know about the shooting? Prague emergency services earlier said the attacker killed 10 people, and police said the shooter was himself "eliminated." After police had initially warned of "dozens" of injured, emergency services later said that 11 people were seriously wounded. Police initially told residents to avoid the area and stay indoors, saying their operations were ongoing. A few minutes later, they said the shooter had been "eliminated." Interior Minister Vit Rakusan confirmed the death of the gunman, and said no accomplices had been found. Czech media reported that the shooting occurred at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. Police said that the university building had been evacuated and that there were "several dead and dozens of wounded." "At the moment, there is a police intervention on the spot, the entire Namesti Jan Palach [square] and the surrounding area is completely closed," police said in an earlier social media post. Jan Palach is a town square in the Old Town of Prague. The Nova television station reported a blast and a gunman on the roof of the building. BansheeOne Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 Killing your family before setting off for the actual shooting spree would be another parallel to Texas U in 1966, though this guy was allegedly most inspired by a recent school shooting in Russia. Quote How killer left a trail of victims across Prague Published 17 hours ago By Paul Kirby BBC News It took 21 minutes for the horror and panic to unfold in the lecture rooms, corridors and staircases of Charles University's historic arts faculty building in the Old Town of Prague. But Czechs are now realising that the Prague shooter's killing spree did not begin there. Before David Kozak had left 14 people dead at the university, he shot his father earlier the same day, and he is also now being investigated for the killing of another man and his two-month-old baby girl in a forest on the eastern fringes of Prague a week ago. Those murders during the afternoon of Friday 15 December had shocked the country. And although the shooter's name was on a list of suspects, that list was long. For days, police had searched the Klanovicky forest, after a witness heard shots ringing out. "We were days from uncovering the shooter from the forest," said Prague police director Petr Matejcek after the university shootings. Ballistics tests are being carried out, and if they confirm the 24-year-old student was the killer, he will have left behind a trail of 17 victims in seven days. Police are facing criticism for their handling of the university attack, but they say they had been working 24 hours a day on the forest murders and could not have foreseen what was coming. "We don't have particular proof or information from him why he decided to do something so terrible," Interior Minister Vit Rakusan told the BBC. He had no criminal record, no history of violence. Earlier this year he had won a prize for a bachelor's thesis from Prague's Polish Institute. It was more than two and a half hours before the university shootings began on Thursday that police were first alerted to a crime in Hostoun, a village 20km (12 miles) west of the capital. At 12:26 local time, a woman called police to say her friend had sent her a text saying he was going to take his life and was not responding to calls, Police Col Vojtech Motyka told reporters. Sixteen minutes later, they determined that he was heading to Prague, and at about 13:00 a man's body - the shooter's father - was recovered in Hostoun. Col Motyka said a device in the house was found that might be a bomb. At 13:15 a nationwide search was launched for the missing student, and at 13:27 Prague police were asked to search for an armed suspect, presumed to be at the faculty of arts in Prague. But the faculty has several facilities and no police units were sent to the iconic building on Jan Palach Square, close to the Vltava river. Instead, they were all sent to Celetna Street, a few minutes' walk into the Old Town, and began evacuating the building at 14:22. Should they have all gone to one faculty, rather than spreading out? The interior minister said at this point they had no indication of anyone else at risk other than the shooter himself, who they were told was due to attend a lecture. Just before 15:00, shooting was reported from the larger faculty building on Jan Palach Square. It was at that moment that David Vichnar, an assistant literature professor, described going up two floors in the lift before becoming stuck there for 15 minutes with the lights out while banging noises went on around him. Meanwhile, police say it took them four minutes from the first alert at 14:59 to enter the building. The first officers on the scene were carrying handguns. [...] The shooter had a licence for eight guns, although it is not yet clear how many he had with him inside the building. It was unknown how he was able to get hold of such a large arsenal and the interior minister says he could have killed many more students. Prague police director Petr Matejcek described being inside the faculty as the attack unfolded and being shocked at the "incredible" piles of ammunition in the corridors. How he managed to bring his guns and ammunition into the building is part of the investigation. By 15:11 the attacker was on the roof and opening fire and it took police time to reach him. Over the next nine minutes, students are seen scrambling to safety, some of them leaping from an upper ledge to a lower floor. Three people on the ground were wounded, as the gunman targeted a police car and another vehicle. One man filming from the ground shouted out, attempting to distract the man from the students trying to escape. "I am here, shoot here, come over here!" At 15:20, the shooter was dead: he saw armed officers coming and turned the gun on himself, say police. It took some time for them to secure the building, but eventually students were escorted to safety with their hands raised as a precaution. Fourteen students and staff lost their lives in the attack on Charles University: 13 were murdered in the building, while another died later in hospital. Twenty-five others were injured. Czech reports said one of the victims had died falling from the building and others had also been hurt trying to escape. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67802094

Texas has authorized and has programs/protocols in place for teachers to be armed. A quick google search shows very few teachers, and districts as a whole, have taken up this opportunity. Why? If anyone has actually interacted with most teachers in K-12 they'll realize most of the folks that go into that profession have no interest in carrying a gun (and frankly, we probably wouldn't want some of them carrying). Hell, we've had multiple incidents of police being present and not reacting to a shooting in progress... so it's pretty clear that simply getting more guns out there is not the solution. Getting SROs or paid security (I've heard some calls, don't know if it's implemented anywhere, of paying and arming vets as school security) will help some... but won't stop it. Meanwhile, the majority of those first four minutes he touches on the issue that, if we tried to address it, would probably do more to stem this issue than getting more guns out there - dealing with the mentally ill psychos who are usually behind these tragedies. Take the recent Maine shooting. Maine had a yellow flag law in place, but local LE have been quoted as saying they didn't want to press that because they feared for their own officers. That nutjob, leading up to the shooting, was setting off flags left and right... and nothing came of it. He had blowups while on Reserve duty, made threats (how is it that wasn't pushed and prosecuted), family and friends were worried about him... and nothing happened. There was talk afterwards of changing the laws in that state to be on par with red flag laws in other states (making it easier to limit access to guns)... but we've seen in other states that even if said laws are on the books many LE agencies, just like in Maine, are unwilling to follow through with them. tl;dr - Seems pretty clear we need to grow some balls as a nation and start taking the real issue seriously here. ID these nutjobs early, get them help or limit their access to firearms, and stop this before they get to a place where folks won't be able to defend themselves... because at the end of the day that is most of America and that is not going to change.
