Serbia had a gun amnesty after the recent shootings. The people turned in 57,000 "handguns" and 20,000 explosiv devices.

Never mind people keeping hand grenades and so on. Are any details on the state of the so called handguns known? Did they turn in mostly junk? Possibly getting even a reward for it's disposal?

No reward for turning in guns.

It is old people giving away various guns they had for ages and never used and people who got guns as inheritance and had no interest in owning those. No reward. From what I have heard it is mostly Zastava M57s (7.62x25) M70 (.32) and CZ-99 (9x19) galore. Oh, and craptastic Zastava M83 revolver, but that one hardly qualifies as a firearm...

ATM anything made before 1945. is free to own w/o license and yearly tax (only registration) so only total idiots are giving away WW2 pieces.

That satire has become reality. The California governor has proposed an amendment that would mitigate the 2nd. No guns for under 21s, no so called assault guns.

Already challenged in principle as a violation of rights.

The notorious serial criminal oneman has been active in Germany again.

Yesterday Oneman tried to sexually molest two female American tourists at Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. When they resisted he threw two off a bridge, 50 meters into a ravine. One died.

Oneman is in custody and known to be 31 years old.

Not sure whether this should be in the mass shooting thread, but multiple media report that the suspect is also a US citizen. Apparently they happened to meet in the area, hiked together, and followed a footpath to a vantage point where he assaulted one of the women, aged 21. When the other, aged 22, tried to help, he pushed her down the slope, and later did the same to the other woman who died in hospital. It's getting lots of attention here due to the touristy setting.

Woman dies after attack near Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle

A man attacked two women near Neuschwanstein castle in southern Germany, killing one.

Authorities on Thursday said that one of two women attacked near one of Germany's most popular tourist sights has died.

The attack took place on Wednesday near a historic bridge popular among tourists for its view of Neuschwanstein Castle, were the man is said to have pushed both women off a steep slope, after attempting to sexually assault them.

The two women, who were 21 and 22 years old, were tourists, but authorities did not disclose their nationalities.

Police in the state of Bavaria said the attacker is a 30-year-old US national, who fled the scene after the attack but was caught and is in custody.

What we know about the attack

Police said the attack occurred near the Marienbruecke, a bridge with views of the world-famous castle.

The women apparantly met their attacker along the route and took a path to the viewpoint.

The the man allegedly attacked the younger woman. The 22-year-old rushed intervene, and the man allegedly pushed her down a steep slope.

He then strangled the 21-year-old and pushed her too.

Police said the Füssen mountain rescue service rescued the two injured women.

The younger woman died in a hospital overnight, while her 22-year-old companion was still in hospital with serious injuries.

Oh, that is unusual and new too.

The spare information and the delay made me think it was one of the many singular and in no way similar cases that have nothing to do with anything and often involve knifes.

For our foreign readers. That is the German equivalent of a mass shooting.

Why unusual, and where was any knife mentioned at all? Violent crime is always most likely to happen within a given in-group (family, friends, colleagues, ethnicity, nationality) due to opportunities resulting from social contact. This being a case in point: all three were tourists who probably met by chance at a tourist destination, found they were all Americans, and decided to stick together. Which gave the suspect the chance to guide them to a spot where he made a pass at one girl, which she didn't appreciate, and it went downhill from there.

Of course I'm sure the usual social media suspects settled on some darkie Muslim immigrant perpetrator as soon as they heard "sexual assault", because they never wait for facts, never tire of being wrong, and thus never learn from it.

With the public/state media you never know what they withhold, or if. They usually do, so you assume it's the usual, which is usually correct but not always as this case shows.

Though I should have cross checked it with the reports in the private media as they are more willing to tell you the known facts.

Gunman found guilty in the deadliest attack on Jews in US

The man who killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 was found guilty in the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history.

A truck driver behind a 2018 shooting attack targeting a Pittsburgh synagogue was convicted on Friday in an act believed to be the deadliest attack on Jews in the United States.

Robert Bowers was convicted of killing 11 congregants and could be sentenced to die for the crime. Jurors could otherwise decide to sentence him to life in prison without parole.

On October 27, 2018, Bowers attacked and killed worshippers at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue.

His lawyers had conceded at the trial that he was responsible for the crime, cementing his guilty verdict.

Bowers was tried on 63 criminal counts. They included hate crimes resulting in death and obstruction of the free exercise of religion resulting in death.

In the penalty phase of the trial, due to begin next week, jurors will decide whether he is sentenced to death or life in prison.

What happened during the trial?

The defendant's attorneys had offered a guilty plea, in an attempt to secure a life sentence instead of the death penalty. Prosecutors turned down the offer, pushing to take the case to trial and consequently going after the death sentence.

A prosecutor accused Bowers on Thursday of turning a sacred house of worship into a "hunting ground" and targeting victims based on their religion.

Besides those killed, Bowers also wounded seven others with his AR-15 rifle and other weapons, including five responding police officers.

Prosecutors also highlighted his animosity toward Jews and immigrants prior to the shooting.

Evidence presented included antisemitic and white supremacist content he shared or liked on Gab, a social media platform popular with the far right. Some content included praise for Hitler and the Holocaust.

Bowers' attorneys are basing their defense on trying to argue the convicted man suffers from schizophrenia.

They did not dispute that he shot the victims. However, they argued his motive was not a hatred of Jewish people, but rather a "misguided intent" to stop a Jewish organization from aiding immigrants attempting to settle in the US.

About time, but I guess 6 years for a multiple murder trial is not atypical.

Now, in the wake of Kaczynski's suicide on June 10 at the age of 81, a sinister little-known aspect of his life has emerged from his time as an undergraduate at Harvard University, that suggests his involvement in the CIA's atrocious brainwashing program known as MK-Ultra.

Led by a maniacal psychologist named Dr. Henry Murray, Kaczynski was one of 22 coeds subjected to, in Murray's own words, 'vehement, sweeping, and personally abusive' mock interrogations between 1958 and 1962.

Patients were dosed with potent mind-altering drugs, subjected to extremes of temperature and sound, high and low pressure, oxygen, food and sleep deprivation, strapped to electroshock machines and forcefully interrogated under a blazing spotlight for hours at a time.

While very little is known of the clandestine experiment and the potential effect it had on Kaczynski during his formative years; it is well known that he eventually retreated to the wilderness of Montana in 1971, where he began a 17-year-long bombing campaign that resulted in three deaths, 23 injuries and the longest and most costly manhunt in American history that spanned two decades.

US: Colorado LGBTQ club shooting suspect jailed for life

The shooter who fatally shot five people at an LGBTQ club in Colorado in 2022 was sentenced to life in prison shortly after pleading guilty to numerous charges of murder and attempted murder.

The attacker who opened fire at an LGBTQ nightclub last year in the US state of Colorado, killing five, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday.

Anderson Lee Aldrich, who identifies as nonbinary, pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder earlier in the day.

The 23-year-old also pleaded guilty to 46 counts of attempted murder, and pleaded no contest to two counts of bias-motivated crime.

The lifetime term without parole as part of a plea deal they struck with state prosecutors.

The plea deal spares survivors and family members of victims a potentially lengthy and painful trial over the deadly attack.

Serbs Hand In More Than 100,000 Illegal Weapons In Amnesty After Mass Shootings

In Serbia, 108,833 illegal weapons were handed in during an amnesty after 18 people were shot dead in two separate mass killings in May, a police spokeswoman said on July 1. The amnesty expired at midnight after one extension. Police said 82,400 handguns, 26,500 mines, and other explosive devices were handed in. The amnesty meant people were not charged for having obtained or owned the illegal weapons. Serbia was shaken by two deadly gun rampages just under two months ago. Since then, tens of thousands of Serbs have taken to the streets in weekly demonstrations against violence and the government.

US: Texas shooter given 90 consecutive life terms

Patrick Crusius, 24, targeted Hispanic shoppers in a racist attack at a Texas Walmart in 2019 that killed 23 and left 22 others injured. He remained silent and displayed no reaction when his sentence was delivered.

A 24-year-old white nationalist who killed 23 people in a mass shooting at a Texas Walmart in 2019 was sentenced to 90 consecutive life terms in prison by a federal judge on Friday.

Patrick Crusius's racially-motivated attack targeted Hispanic shoppers in El Paso on August 3, 2019, and left 22 people injured.

Just prior to the assault, the shooter had published a manifesto online, claiming that the attack was a response to what he called the "Hispanic invasion" of Texas.

During the hearing, Crusius remained silent and displayed no reaction when the sentence was delivered.

In a recommendation by US District Judge David Guaderrama, Crusius was advised to serve his sentence at a maximum security facility in Colorado, where he would have access to necessary treatment and counseling for a severe mental health condition.

Shooter could still face death penalty

By pleading guilty in February, Crusius avoided the federal death penalty, but he still faces Texas state charges that could potentially result in capital punishment.

Crusius' attorney attributed the shooting to mental illness, although prosecutors argued that he was fully aware of his actions when he carried out the massacre.

Prosecutors revealed that Crusius traveled over 600 miles (965 kilometers) from suburban Dallas to El Paso, armed with a Romanian variant of the AK-47 rifle and hollow-point ammunition, before the massacre.

At least 16 dead in Maine mass killing and police hunt for the shooter as residents take shelter

BY DAVID SHARP

Updated 1:21 PM MESZ, October 26, 2023

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — A man shot and killed at least 16 people at a restaurant and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, and then fled into the night, sparking a massive search by hundreds of officers while frightened residents in multiple communities stayed locked in their homes Thursday under a shelter-in-place advisory.

A police bulletin identified Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest in the attack that sent panicked bowlers scrambling behind pins when shots rang out around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve and assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine.

The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base. A telephone number listed for Card in public records was not in service.

Lewiston Police said in an earlier Facebook post that they were dealing with an active shooter incident at Schemengees Bar and Grille and at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) away. A number of parents and children were at Sparetime as part of a children’s bowling league.

[...]

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office released two photos of the suspect on its Facebook page that showed the shooter walking into an establishment with a weapon raised to his shoulder.

Two law enforcement officials told The AP that at least 16 people were killed and the toll was expected to rise. However, Michael Sauschuck, commissioner of the Maine Department of Public Safety, declined to provide a specific estimate at a news conference, calling it a “fluid situation.” State police planned to hold a midmorning news conference Thursday.

It’s the 36th mass killing in the United States this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

The two law enforcement officials said dozens of people also had been wounded. The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

And since it happens to be on this thread: The suspect has now been indicted for rape resulting in death, murder and attempted murder, as well as possessing child porn which was apparently found on his computer and smartphone. Seems like an all-round charming fellow.
