What's up with that blob in the middle of Sweden? I guess it's just b/c rates are so low that any spike in murders gets over-represented?

Looks like the counties of Jämtland and Västernorrland. Which seem to be sparsely settled with just enough urban concentrations for homicides to drive the per-head rate beyond the either more or less populated counties.

Yeah, the entire area has less than 400k population (did most of my growing up there and the area to the north). It probably random year by year fluctuation. Three murders in one year would result in a homicide rate of below 1 (the lowest in the chart), 4-5 would be the second lowest and six would be enough to put it in the third category. Funny enough Jämtland, the eastern part of the area is the region in Sweden with the most guns (0.6 guns/capita), about half that of the US average.

ETA: Went digging in the Swedish Statistics Bureau and it definitely [fixed autocorrect] looks like random fluctuations. I also included Västerbotten and Norrbotten (the top area) as the four police districts was merged in 2015.

               2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
Västernorrland 5 1 0 1 1
Jämtland 1 1 0 0 0
Västerbotten 2 3 0 1 2
Norrbotten 2 3 5 1 2
Polisregion Nord 10 2 5 4

Yea, I remember the days when everybody used to speculate that it didn't really matter which candidate you voted for in US presidential elections, because the policy differences would be so small.

I kind of miss those days.

Well, from the outside looking in, your political parties look like two sets of slightly right of centre clownshoes, with some on your "left" just squeaking into 1990s "New Labour" territory, so not much different, really. It's simply that the discourse is much more strident.

It is refreshing to know that as a European you know the difference between U.S. and European political labels. As an American though, I cannot say the Democrats are "slightly right of center" per U.S. definition. Perhaps a couple of decades age the Democrats used to be slight off center, but now they are wretchedly liberal. They lean so far to port that they are capsizing our great nation.

Well you can understand the confusion, over here a Liberal is someone whom is of the centre ground in politics.

I understand there is confusion. I don't understand "the" confusion. But as I've stated before, I'm unattentive toward European politics.

It was made more complex when the Blairites controlled the Labour party - that was "New Labour" and the Liberal Democrats were arguably a little more to the left than that, but still insufferably middle class so unable to get a working class vote share.

Bernie Sanders is a classic 70s North European-type social democrat in the mold of Olof Palme and Willy Brandt. He used to be the outlier in national politics, but Alexandra Occasio-Cortez and her fellow younger Democratic Socialists of America actually remind me of the German SPD's youth wing, the Young Socialists. Which have tended towards firebreathing Marxism since the late 60s, to the point where they had an almost oppositional stance towards the mother party in the 70s and 80s.

Of course a lot of former Jusos subsequently grew up to become New-Labourish pragmatists in the following decades - like Gerhard Schröder, who as chancellor presided over deep welfare reforms after the Millennium, which started the SPD's demise from being one of the two major German parties. The US background is completely different though; will be interesting to see which way those actual leftist youngsters go.

Apropos of Nordic homicide.

Finland Kuopio school attack leaves one dead

01 October 2019

One person has died and 10 have been wounded in a violent attack at a vocational college in the Finnish city of Kuopio, police say.

A witness told Finnish media that a student entered Savo college carrying a sword and stabbed several people.

Police said the suspect was carrying a "bladed weapon" and a gun.

They said they used a firearm when they arrived at the school, which is in a shopping centre south of the centre of Kuopio.

Another witness told local radio that armed police had confronted the suspect and two shots had been fired.

The suspect, who police say is Finnish man, was among those wounded in the attack. Two are described as in a serious condition.

"One dead body has been found at the college premises of Kuopio Herman," police said. The wounded have been taken to Kuopio university hospital where a major disaster alert is under way.

Students 'threw chairs' at attacker

The college has about 600 students and 40 staff, but officials say it is unclear how many were at the scene at the time of the attack.

One woman told Finnish media how she had helped a female teacher who suffered a deep wound to her hand when she was attacked by the student.

He had walked in on a class shortly after midday and pulled a sword out of his bag and attacked the teacher, the Iltahlehti news website reported. As she tried to flee, students threw chairs at the attacker in an attempt to escape and some were wounded.

Prime Minister Antti Rinne said the violence at the college was "shocking and completely unacceptable", while Education Minister Li Andersson said every young person had a right to study in safety, without fear of violence.

Finland is considered a relatively safe country, with a total of 73 homicides in 2017, but it does have a large gun-owning population. In 2008, a 22-year-old gunman shot dead 10 people at a vocational school in the town of Kauhajoki before fatally shooting himself.

When the video starts the man in blue shirt (the coach) have already disarmed the suspect(facing camera) probably without use of force and is holding a rifle in his right hand. Next clip shows the coach hugging/dragging the suspect away from the rifle which is then laying on the floor. Man in white trousers picks it up and walk away to make sure suspect does not try to get it back.

Stupid me just realised that you may not even see that first image.

Santa Clarita California school shooting.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-50422956

One female dead, two other students injured.

15 y/o suspect in custody.

The last paragraph seems a little suspect. I suppose it depends on what you consider an "experience": "According to the Washington Post, more than 230,000 young people have experienced gun violence at school since the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado in 1999."

I'm sure they're counting students who dwell in 'crackpipe huffer/Meth tweaker' parts of the city.

5 wounded, including the gunman from what they say on CNN. 2 badly.

A 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy died at a local hospital. Wegener said the three injured victims are two girls, 14 and 15, and a 14-year-old boy. None of the victims have been identified by law enforcement. The shooter has a self-inflicted head wound.

These are becoming regular occurrences, to the point where the public may becoming numbed to them.

The middle or partial-combined last name of this shooter is Tennosuke. This implies Japanese ethnicity.

I'm pretty sure its only a given name for boys, not a last name. Probably given as a middle name. Mother looks Japanese.
