But of course, the US won't. After Tianamen Square, the US let China into the WTO and purchased Chinese goods at deficit rates far greater than what is with Mexico, Germany, and Japan combined, enabling PRC might to grow to what it is now in which it can exert such pressure on HK. Some may want to put all the blame on the UK about HK being return to China. But afterall, God emporer himself has said it many times, "We rebuilt China!" JasonJ Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 USS Green Bay and USS Erie denied port visit to HK by PRC, adding to the lists of denied port visits. THE PENTAGON – Chinese officials are denying two U.S. warships port visits to Hong Kong amidst ongoing protests against the government in Beijing. USS Green Bay (LPD-20) and USS Lake Erie (CG-70) were denied requests to visit Hong Kong, U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Nate Christensen told USNI News on Tuesday. “The U.S. Navy has a long track record of successful port visits to Hong Kong, and we expect them to continue,” he said. “We refer you to the Chinese government for further information about why they denied the request.” Green Bay is part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group and is embarked with about 700 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Okinawa, Japan. The ARG had recently completed the Talisman Saber exercise off of Australia. Lake Erie is a guided-missile cruiser based in San Diego, Calif. The denial comes as anti-government protests have raged in the semi-autonomous region since early June. In the last two days, protestors have occupied Hong Kong’s airport and Chinese special police have been massed along the border with Shenzhen, according to reports. Chinese foreign ministry officials have accused the U.S. government in general and CIA specifically of encouraging the protests in Hong Kong. On Tuesday, President Trump denied involvement. “Many are blaming me, and the United States, for the problems going on in Hong Kong. I can’t imagine why?” Trump tweeted Tuesday, according to Politico. “Our Intelligence has informed us that the Chinese Government is moving troops to the Border with Hong Kong. Everyone should be calm and safe!” Beijing has had a history of canceling port visits at times of high tension with the U.S. government. In October, Chinese officials denied USS Wasp (LHD-1) entrance into the port as Washington and Beijing were embroiled in a conflict over trade and arms deals with Russia. “The Chinese side reviews and approves such request in accordance with the principle of sovereignty and specific situation on a case-by-case basis,” officials said at the time. The statement was the same language the Chinese used in 2016 when carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) was denied a port visit after the U.S. made a show of force in the South China Sea that included a visit from then-Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. After two U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers ignored Chinese imposed requirements of an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the East China Sea in 2014, China denied Hong Kong visit to guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG-97), In 2007, the Chinese denied two U.S. Avenger class mine countermeasure ships sheltered waters and fuel in the face of an upcoming storm and turned away the Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike Group after an arms deal with Taiwan and after then-President George W. Bush presented the Tibetan exile Dalai Lama the Congressional Gold Medal. That same year Beijing denied an Air Force flight to resupply the U.S. Embassy in Hong Kong and a planned port visit of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Reuben James (FFG-57) was canceled.https://news.usni.org/2019/08/13/two-u-s-warships-marines-denied-port-visits-to-hong-kong-amidst-protests
Nobu Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Thats an interesting analysis. Yeah, I can see that. It may also be that Trump, if he he has to show any response, may just arm the Taiwanese up. its the cheapest and easiest solution to the requirement to 'do something'. For us, we can hardly hold the Chinese to a trade deal, if they wont hold to the terms we signed with them for the future of Hong Kong. Its hardly as if we set the bar very high for them. I could see that as being Trump's response as well, as it would have the advantage of also being income generating in various ways.
BansheeOne Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Yeah, and it would be one foreign policy move of his I would fully support. AEGIS ships including SM-3 would be particularly valuable. I also hear a couple dozen F-35s would be readily available if you changed the Turkish roundels to Taiwanese.
DB Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 How many of these pictures are of dead people walking?
Stuart Galbraith Posted August 14, 2019 Author Posted August 14, 2019 Would the next 'Tankman' please step forward please. I dont get the Chinese, we drop a pearl in their lap and they complain its the wrong colour.
Panzermann Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Would the next 'Tankman' please step forward please. You know the story behind that scene? the man came from grocery shopping and the tanks were actually leaving the city already. I have no idea why he felt to stop the column. I dont get the Chinese, we drop a pearl in their lap and they complain its the wrong colour. Hong Kong is supposed to be gleichgeschaltet like any other part of china. Everything is to be Han-ified. btw what is going on in Macao at the moment? The other former colony.

Josh Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 Enough. Assuming that is the only location, which seems exceedingly unlikely. If the PLA drops the hammer, they will come out and handle things without reservation. It will forever change HK, which is the only reason it hasn't happened: no foreign country (more importantly, corporation) will sit in a city covered in Tiamen style blood. But end of the day the PRC won't allow this to keep going. Just like the Trump trade war, they will commit to a long march to preserve themselves regardless of whatever else goes wrong. If it means giving up that fiance hub, they will.
R011 Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 Im disappointed they have not raised the ROC flag.... They were never part of the Republic of China. They were a British Crown Colony at that time. I do note they aren't flying the flag of the country that gave them to the PRC.

Ironically many American corporations will loudly leave a US state when a pro-life or a "no penis in women's bathroom" law is passed there, but have no problems whatsoever doing business in a stalinist nation that savagely oppresses over a billion people. Google employees need blankies and teddy bears to overcome the trauma of Trump being elected president, but have not problems working with said stalinist nation in creating instruments to enslave 1.3 billion people. F@#k them. That is my point: what worked in 1989 won't work now. Now having a bad commercial can screw your bottom line, let alone supporting an unpopular cause. The Great Fire Wall only works in one direction, and the CCP knows it. That said, they will not allow this to stand, no matter the cost.
Nobu Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 (edited) I am actually surprised and slightly disappointed that moving their flavor of Occupy from the financial district to the city's international airport with the intent to publicize their cause by causing as many missed connections and airline cancellations for air travelers as possible did not trigger the violent crackdown against them (at least not from JAL passengers whose travel plans were ruined) that they appear to be trying very hard to provoke. If this Carrie Lam manages to maintain her policy of restraint up to this point, the next logical escalation for the protesters would be the use of violence against the police and uniformed members of the city authorities. I suspect the popcorn consumption rate among Filipinos, Indoneese, and other nationalities who exist as second-class citizens as servants of Hongkongese may have increased dramatically this past month or two, as they are undoubtedly enjoying the spectacle of Chinese/Hongkongese at each other's throats in their cool black tees as much if not more than I am. R011 Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 Not at all. If Amazon et al wish to support the Chinese Communist Party and its enlightened policies on LGBT issues and human rights they may. It is, however odd that they support things like concentration camps for gays in China but oppose laws about people with penises using women's and girl's washrooms. It is a bit concerning, though, that they also support suppression of both conservative speech and speech supporting democracy in China or criticism of the CCP and its leadership.
