Felt it might make more sense to continue with one thread rather than specific ones on DLC. If anyone feels its worth merging all the previous threads into this one, please feel free.

Well that was impressive!

One would think that a company that prides itself with accuracy would at least get the squadron codes correct.

DZ is the code for 151 Sqd and from April '42 flew Mosquitoes. Other codes didn't exist while some others didn't fly Spit IXs.

I knew I was going to regret posting that. :)

There is also the problem of the RAF roundal being the wrong size, which exercises a LOT of people in the community, understandably. Though it is overcome by some of the 3rd party skins which are much better.

One area the DCS Spitfire is better than the IL2 one is in the flight modelling. The VB you can buy as DLC for IL2 is excellent in pretty much every way. The only problem is, it doesnt model the centrifugal effect of the engine/propeller, so it feels a bit like a small jet aircraft. This is properly modelled in DCS, to the point where I found landing the damn thing possibly one of the most challenging things ive done in a flight sim. If I could actually find somewhere decent to dogfight it in multiplayer, id be a very happy man. Its about the only spitfire ive flown in a sim that flys anything like the pilots describe.

Spits were hard to land they tended to float. Engine rpm should be near idle so torque should be minimal.

Yep, exactly like in the dcs one. I find if im about 30 feet off the deck to pull the power back into idle. If you do it on the runway, it kicks, and you find yourself veering out of control. See that a lot in seafire landings.

If you just above the runway (and i prefer to judge it visually than use the altimeter, then you pull back the nose and 3 pointer it. Though I notice a lot of pilots find it easier to get it on 2 wheels. It probably is, but you have to be careful to keep the vsi low or it folds up on you.

There are a lot of pluses and minuses between IL2 and DCS. I Love the formers campaign. That said im a button geek, so....

I did some skins for the huey, I really must publish them one of these days.

It's a lot of course changes in relatively close formation, and no clear hierarchy; so it's every AI for itself. This combination is pretty much guaranteed to deliver such a result. I'm torn between "terrified if this was real" and "admiration for the comedy potential".

Id love to see an equally large formation fly through the other one. Does that make me a bad person? :D

Which reminds me, this is quite beautiful to watch. Ah, if only multiplayer was fast enough to do this. :)

The maker of the video tried it with prop jobs, no crashes.

Yes, Stuart. A very naughty person indeed.

But that was awesome!

I suspect that the helicopter AI has more freedom degrees of maneuver, therefore (for the prop planes case) disturbances at the front ripple through the formation slower, and aren't amplified in the process that much. It's probably similar to how flowing traffic on a fully saturated road must create a "phantom traffic jam" from the slightest disturbance at the tip that then propagates against the flow with amplification until some cars come to a full stop.

Yeah, its pretty good. Personally Id like to see an F14 vs Mig31 version. :)

Speaking of the Tomcat, Ive just flown the first mission in a new campaign someone upped on the Eagle Dynamics forum. Basically the idea is its 1992 and the Russian Government falls, and has designs on rebuilding the Union. You are the QRA on the John Stennis in the Black sea and have to intercept some Su24's that are closing on the carrier. Just before the merge you get the word to engage. So there I was fully loaded with Aim54 and fuel, having to turn and burn with fully loaded Su24s. So I used the Aim54 in ACM mode to get them off the airframe basically. 3 Kills. Then you get the word, oh yeah, there is a Backfire raid incoming, do something about it. So I closed with that, managed to bag a couple of Backfires with Sparrows, and damaged another with a Sidewinder. So I was a one mission ace. Even more amazingly after the mission I managed a near textbook landing on the carrier.

Well worth trying if anyone has the Tomcat. And If they don't? Well get it. Despite some minor bugs this is about as near you are ever going to get to flying one. Unless you fancy flying for Iran of course.
