We have learned the shooter's name is John Ernest, 19, of San Diego. He is believed to have taken part in a mosque burning in nearby Escondido last month.

 

Although the situation is still fluid, we know a white, middle aged male used an "AR-style" firearm to carry out the attack. The number of rounds fired is still unknown.

 

Four people were taken to Palomar Medical Center, including one female juvenile, two adult males and an older female. The older female succumbed to her injuries. The other three individuals are in stable condition.

 

I have seen the claim that this attack was exactly 6 months after the last synagogue shooting, but I haven't checked that.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore confirmed that the suspect in the Poway synagogue shooting is 19-year-old John T. Earnest from San Diego.

According to a manifesto, published online shortly after 10 a.m. PST on Saturday, Earnest also takes responsibility for an Escondido Mosque arson a month prior. During that incident, Earnest spray-painted messages referencing the New Zealand mosque shooting.

The synagogue shooting and the mosque arson were less than 9 miles apart.

Word is an off duty Border Patrol agent who was a member retrieved a gun kept at the synagogue in case something like this happened and engaged the shooter. Good guy with a gun...

 

This guy is also a suspect in a mosque burning. Hated everyone, including Trump because of his support for Israel.

That's the most literal copycat attacker I've ever seen. Apparently parts of his manifesto are basically copy-and-paste from the Christchurch guy's. Also announced, but failed to stream live video. From what I've seen cited, he sounds like a bored teenager looking for any excuse to go postal and get his five minutes of fame.

 

The family of two of the wounded reportedly moved to the US from Sderot in 2014 to escape the frequent rocketing from the Gaza Strip, which is ironic. They don't regret their choice though.

A relative of two Israelis who were injured in Saturday’s shooting at a Chabad synagogue in Poway, California, said his family had moved to San Diego amid incessant rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, some of which had damaged their home, causing injuries — only to be targeted by anti-Semitism in the United States.

 

Local authorities say 19-year-old John Earnest opened fire with an assault rifle on worshipers during morning services on the last day of Passover, killing 60-year-old Lori Gilbert-Kaye and wounding the rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein; Israeli girl Noya Dahan, 8, who was hit by shrapnel in the face and leg; and her uncle Almog Peretz, 31, who was shot in the leg. All three are in stable condition.

 

“We came from fire to fire,” said Israel Dahan, Noya’s father, referring to the family’s move from the rocket-battered Gaza-border town of Sderot to California.

 

Dahan told Israel Radio that the family’s home in Sderot had been hit by rockets several times over the years, and that he was injured on one of those occasions.

 

After moving to the US several years ago, he said, the family’s new home was targeted — this time by anti-Semites, who spray-painted swastikas on the walls.

 

“It can happen anywhere. We are strong,” he said.

 

Peretz said he was able to quickly protect children from harm during the attack due to instincts he honed over years rushing to shelters to hide from thousands of rockets fired by terror groups in the Gaza Strip over the last 15 years.

 

“This is sad, but I am originally from Sderot so we know a bit about running from the Kassam rockets,” he told Israel’s Channel 12 from his hospital bed.

At this point, if you don't have an armed response plan at your place of worship, your congregants and house of worship's management have their heads in the sand.

I know a few folks IRL who work as armed plain clothes security at various places, one includes one of the Synagogues near by.

At my church, we've always had off-duty police in uniform, originally to help with traffic and deter offering thieves. As we've grown into a multi-campus 'megachurch', we have kept the off-duty presence, so members are comfortable with them. We also have a 'safety' team of church members who are ostensibly for observation and reporting, as well as low-key interaction with persons of interest.

Being in Alabama, concealed carry by attendees is not brought up, unless attention is attracted.
