I think she may have been trying to say that it must not have been as bad as it might have been given the kids apparently turned out ok and it was really the parents fault. Not only a mistaken view of predators and victims, but anyone with the slightest awareness would realize this would go badly for her.

Not that I am suggesting that anyone goes out and buys it or reads it, but out of curiosity, given the generational nature of written erotic literature (recently the 'Shades of Grey' series, the Story of O of the 1950s etc) I bought the book 'The Delta of Venus' by Anais Nin a couple of years ago. It contains an unapologetic short story about a father's incest with his underage daughters. I was surprised, not that Anais Nin wrote the story, but that it was still being published.

 

But then again, what is considered literature can break all the rules about pornography.

It's just words, after all. With actual child pornography, it's a no-brainer that this is criminal and must be banned since there can be no such thing as consensuality in the first place, so its mere existence creates victims. So then the question is what, if anything, should be done about synthetic fantasies of under-age sex. If there was a clear connection that the mere consumption of such media productions - be they literature, comic books, VR videos - increases the likelihood of actual child rapes, their production would be highly problematic and I would support a ban, including literature. I have however not heard about such a clear link yet. In which case I think that there are so many other variants of non-illegal porn that I find icky (and then others that I do not), who wants to judge which forms of porn are tasteful and which are not? And if we start banning poor taste in porn, why not ban poor taste in music, TV shows, comic books, computer games, ... --- where will it end?

 

If you want to preserve free speech, the only criterium can be whether its production or its consumption is at least indirectly harmful to third parties. That's where I'd draw the line. If that causal relation can't be proven, I'm for a hands-off attitude.
