I had one of my scarier taxi rides in Brussels; the driver was rather preoccupied with filling out paperwork on his clipboard with occasional steering impulses to change our vector from immediate collision with the opposite lane's motorists, cut several people off, made a left turn through oncoming traffic, dumped me at the wrong location, didn't help with the luggage, and in best French traditions was quite vocally offended when I didn't give a tip.

You had a real taxi? When I arrived for the Brussels mini-I&I, I was encountered by a well-dressed guy of undetermined ethnicity at the airport who asked whether I needed a taxi. When I confirmed, he led me to a private car in the remotest corner of the airport garage. I thought "okay, I'll play" and asked the price. He said "50 Euros", and since that was what Harold had quoted for a typical ride to his base, I agreed. In fact the guy delivered me safe and sound. He'd have been very sorry if he hadn't, too. :D

This one freaked me out a bit. ;)

Lace curtains!

This is from memory, and it was a long time ago, so i might be exaggerating a bit but not by much. :D

I was walking down the street in a residential area in Brussel when I noticed that every window, and I really mean every single window, had some sort of thin lace curtains covering the lower half of the window. I realise people may want some privacy but that just looked to much. To my untrained eye they all looked identical as well. All where white, same height and almost identical pattern. It would not have hurt to mix it up a bit, just a tip to all you Belgians out there. :)

I believe the Belgians are known for their expertise in this field but that was a new experience in home decoration for me.

Luckily these horrible conceptions have all but dissapeared. The only lace made now is to sell to tourists (mainly in Brussels and Bruges). Belgians find lace quite ridicilous and cheesy nowadays.

I bet the hipsters have started to put them in their windows again. Ironically of course. ;)

I lived in Evere, a suburb of Brussels for three years while I worked at Eurocontrol.

I loved it.
