There are reports up to a dozen people have been injured in a shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Police have confirmed they are responding to a "critical incident".

All Christchurch schools are in lockdown and witnesses have reported multiple injuries.

People in central Christchurch have been urged to stay indoors and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to authorities.

New Zealand's Prime Minister is expected to speak shortly.

A witness interviewed on TVNZ said a man carrying a gun entered the Masjid al-Noor mosque about 1:45pm (local time).

"I heard a big sound of the gun. And a second one, I ran. Lots of people were sitting on the floor. I ran behind the mosque," he said.

Multiple people have been reported dead after shootings at two Christchurch mosques, with the Armed Officers Squad also called to the Christchurch Hospital.

Worshippers at both the Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch and the Linwood Mosque have been shot at, with eyewitnesses reporting several have been killed, though officials have not confirmed this.

The New Zealand Herald says there are at least six casualties, with one witness reporting seeing a man with an automatic rifle opening fire on the mosque during Friday prayers - the busiest time of the week.

 

Stuff.co.nz reports that the shooters' rifles had Alexandre Bissonette and Luca Traini written on them - the names of mosque shooters in Italy and Canada.

 

Shots have also been fired at Christchurch Hospital, which has activated its emergency plan and expects 40-50 victims.

 

About 20 armed police are clearing buildings in Linwood, across from Eastgate Mall.

Police are warning people to stay indoors and to report any suspicious behaviour to 111.

All Christchurch schools have been put on lockdown.

A man, who would not give his name, said he was praying in the mosque when he heard the shooting start.

He managed to escape, but outside saw his wife lying dead on the footpath.

“My wife is dead,” he said, wailing. He was supported by other Muslim men who prayed for him.

Another man said he saw children being shot.

Dozens of people were shot by a man wearing military uniform, who emptied at least two magazines.

“There were bodies all over me.”

A resident on Freyberg St said she heard “hundreds” of shots and it was “terrifying”.

The former president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, Mohammed Jama, said a man with a gun went into the Al Noor Mosque mosque about 1.40pm on Friday.

He saw about four people injured and two lying on the ground. He did not know if they were alive or dead.

A photographer said he could see three seriously injured people on the doorstep of the mosque.

"A serious and evolving situation is occurring in Christchurch with an active shooter," Police Commissioner Mike Bush said.

"Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high.

"Police recommend that residents across Christchurch remain off the streets and indoors until further notice. Christchurch schools will be locked down until further notice.

 

Police have cleared Cathedral Square, where thousands of children were rallying for action on climate change.

Armed police were also trying to clear Deans Avenue and Hagley Park. A large number of police were also reportedly at Christchurch Hospital.

A reporter at the scene said the mood was very tense. A lot of people were gathered around the mosque.

A nearby business owner said a lot of of people were praying at the mosque at the time.

 

"I heard 20 or more gunshots. I thought something happened and the people were running on the other side of Deans Avenue and now I can see so many police."

A man who ran from the mosque told him the shooting happened there.

The Bangladesh cricket team escaped the mosque.

Cricinfo's Bangladesh correspondent Mohammad Isam posted a video to Twitter of the team rushing through Hagley Park away from the mosque.

"Just escaped active shooters!!! Heartbeats pumping badly and panic everywhere!! #ChristchurchMosque," he wrote.

Mario Villavarayen, strength and conditioning coach of the Bangladesh cricket team said the players were shaken up, but fine.

"I spoke to one of them shortly after [the incident]. They didn't see anything but heard gunshots. They were at the ground [Hagley Oval] and just started running.

"The coaching staff were all at the hotel. The players just started running when they heard the shots."

Bangladesh are due to play New Zealand at Hagley Oval on Saturday.

A New Zealand Cricket spokesperson said it was too early to know if match would go ahead.

One woman in the area said she was told by police there was a shooter in Hagley Park.

Another witness reported hearing at least 20 gunshots and saw what she thought was three people on the ground.

A witness said he saw two people walking out of the mosque. A car was chasing the people along Deans Avenue and the people in the car started shooting at them, he said.

A person at the scene said armed police were searching for someone in North Hagley Park. Two ambulances had arrived at the scene.

Christchurch Girls' and Christchurch Boys' high schools and Hagley Community College have been placed into lockdown.

Parents of Christchurch Girls' students were sent text messages about 2.05pm, which said: "This is not an exercise."

A witness at the scene said she heard a "bunch of shots" from a building on Deans Avenue.

She saw police on the corner of Lester Lane and Deans Avenue.

 

They went outside the building, but police stayed them to stay inside.

"We heard police telling a gunman to put their hands up," she said.

Video floating around the net of the shooting live streamed shows a gunman entering a mosque and shooting, first with a shotgun, then with a rifle. I may sound insensitive but the video looks like a first person shooter game (not saying I think it's fake, just saying it reminds me of first person shooter games).

Forty dead, in a small country, in a small city. So hard to believe.

 

I know that the Australian PM has been in contact with the NZ PM, I am hoping that Australia is mobilising and sending any medical help that it can. I suspect that the NZ Police and Armed Forces have things under as much control as they can, but again, as during the Christchurch earthquakes, when Australia sent police and rescue teams to assist, that Australian personnel are already gearing up to go.

I was working in a Court Registry in Sydney on the day of the Lindt Cafe siege and volunteered to staff the place when the rest of the staff were to be sent home. We did not really know what the fucque was going on, but as I was relatively old and figured that most of my life had been lived I stayed. It turned out that where I worked was not at risk (there were reports of explosive devices located around the city), but we did not know that at the time. Another, younger bloke, also volunteered to stay for a while. Our security staff (private contractors - more power to them) were on alert.

 

It turned out that the Lindt Cafe bastard had something against us (the court involved) as well, but we were not to know.

 

I was pleased to hear that the perp was terminated but so very much (times 100) less pleased to hear about the other casualties.

 

It tends to bring things close to home when a person of the religion of peace causes terror in one's backyard.

 

On the other hand, attacks against the "religion of peace" just gives those adherents the excuse for further attacks.

 

No excuses should be given and no civilised state should tolerate attacks.

There is a claim on CNN that among the wounded (Not clear if its among the dead or not) are children. Many people were shot in the back as they were running away, and several car bombs have been recovered. So thankfully he knows less about bomb making than he does shooting.

I cant bring myself to watch it. There was a very graphic description on CNN of what it contains, of a woman shot from a distance, seen begging for her life, then being dispatched with a head-shot. I can do without seeing shit like that.

 

I pity the families who know that footage of their loved ones being murdered is going to bounce around cyberspace for the next million years or so. Or at least till the next one.

The first shooting starts at around 6:25. The perpetrator had trouble operating its firearms, dropping loaded magazines on the ground and having to pick them up later on. Afterwards he drives around and shoots some people in the streets through his car windows. He also reflects on the earlier shooting and what went wrong from his point of view.

According to BBC, the Bangladesh Cricket Team, whom are in NZ for a Test Match, had to run for the lives from one of the Mosques. Understandably the 3rd Test had been cancelled.

Ive not read it, and to be honest, ive no wish to. its apparently in the form of an address to himself, references many online references (I can guess which ones) and also there is a passing reference to Anders Brevick. He also called for the assassination of the London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Angela Merkel and President Erdogan.

Thats all I need to know really.
