US&Co best practices spreading (as i predicted long ago), but probably it is the first time targets on nuclear power territory hit by another (and not exactly friendly) power

"his was an intelligence-based counter terror strike and not a military action for sake of war. Have demolished entire terror setup in the suicide bombing training centre in Balakot, and over 300 terrorists were eliminated in the covert operation by Indian Air Force: ANI quoting sources"

India and Pakistan have been shooting at each other for a few weeks now AFAIK, in what has become their annual ritual of violence since 2013. Escalation to air force involvement was probably a given

It is only a matter of time before the Pakistanis retaliate.

You're actually off by about 68 years, Roman. :)

This raid was surprising only that it struck Pakistan proper, just outside Kashmir. They haven't done that since '71 AFAIK.

The Pakistan reaction seems set up to be 'eh'. They declared no one was hurt right off the bat, which to me sounds like they want to bury it like it was an IAF raid on Syria.

I noticed this at the bottom:

"In December 1950, a MiG-15 pair in Primorye was shot down by a reconnaissance aircraft RB-29."

A B-29 shot down two jets!

For the sake of a reduction in the dangers inherent to two nuclear powers killing each other's troops on a tit for tat basis this year since February 14, I hope there are some cooler heads somewhere on the subcontinent, as the limited coverage of India's recent airstrike has been triumphal and almost gloating in various ways.

There was actually a very good lecture I was listening to on youtube, it was either Brookings or Atlantic council, that gave a good description and reason why these incidents occur. They are for the most part theatre, put on to make the US intervene on one side or the other, or as an honest broker over some dispute. Now the US has to give it credit, done a pretty good job down the years mediating between the two sides whenever disputes like this occur. The problem now is of course, you have a US president apparently wholly disinterested in the Indian subcontinent, and far more interested high fiving it with his drinking buddy kim, and a Foreign Ministry still largely unmanned, and similarly fixated on North Korea.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out this could all go very wrong very quickly. There is a price to be paid for the US withdrawing from the world, and they wont be the ones paying it.

Pakistan shoots down Indian jets, carries out airstrikes in Kashmir

Pakistan shot down two Indian jets on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Pakistan armed forces said, a day after Indian warplanes struck inside Pakistan for the first time since a war in 1971, prompting leading powers to urge the nuclear armed rivals to show restraint.

Tensions have been elevated since a suicide car bombing by Pakistan-based militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police on Feb. 14, but the risk of conflict rose dramatically on Tuesday when India launched an air strike on what it said was a militant training base.

The attack targeted the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant, the group that claimed credit for the suicide attack. But while India said a large number of JeM fighters had been killed, Pakistani officials said the Indian airstrike was a failure and inflicted no casualties.

Indian air force planes strayed into Pakistani airspace on Wednesday after Pakistan had carried out airstrikes in Indian-occupied Kashmir, said Major General Asif Ghafoor, a spokesman for the Pakistan armed forces.

Yeah, confirmed on the BBC (please put the link up Gregory).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-47383634

Pakistan says it has shot down two Indian Air Force jets in a major escalation of the Kashmir conflict.

A spokesman said one plane had fallen inside Pakistani territory and two pilots had been arrested. There is no comment from India. Pakistan has denied reports one of its jets was shot down.

Both India and Pakistan claim all of Kashmir, but control only parts of it.

The nuclear powers have fought several wars since independence from Britain in 1947. All but one were over Kashmir.

The aerial attacks across the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Indian and Pakistani territory are the first since a war in 1971.

They follow a militant attack in Kashmir which killed 40 Indian troops - the deadliest to take place during a three-decade insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir. A Pakistan-based group said it carried out the attack.

What's the latest?

Pakistan's assertion that it had shot down two Indian aircraft came shortly after Islamabad said its warplanes had struck targets in Indian territory.

Pakistan said it had "taken strikes at [a] non-military target, avoiding human loss and collateral damage".

Indian authorities said the Pakistani jets had been pushed back.

In response to PAF strikes this morning as released by MoFA, IAF crossed LOC. PAF shot down two Indian aircrafts inside Pakistani airspace. One of the aircraft fell inside AJ&K while other fell inside IOK. One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground while two in the area.

Oh, and there is this, bits of which are in English.

I can't understand if he is repeating his words in English or just inserting bits of English into his explanations ?

Well the US has issued a statement and it generally backs India's strike inside Pakistan airspace because it was targeting a terrorist training camp. But the end message is as you described, US calling for both sides to cool down.

When you hear at a press conference the Pakistani Journalists calling the Indian's 'Monkey's, you realize things are probably going to go bad very quickly.

Anyone from the subcontinent calling anyone else a monkey is usually the sign that something is about to go very pear shaped, just ask Australian cricketers

That first Pakistani thread Jason posted refers, im not sure how accurately, to this being the JF17 being used. Which is probably going to do wonders for sales.

NAZ-7 mentioned here - it is probably iIndian version of Soviet НАЗ (Носимый Аварийный Запас, portable emergency kit), so Indoan plane lost is probably Russian\Soviet
