Venezuela Getting Hotter

In this instance, the supporters are Moscow, Beijing, and, interestingly, New Delhi. These 3 form the core of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, whose unity and effectiveness will now be put to the test. Bringing India and Indians onside in the effort to install a replacement for Maduro, for the purposes of fracturing the SCO, should now be a priority for Washington in various ways.

Private Mercenary Company. Although in this case perhaps less private than state owned, and less Mercenaries than Russian Squaddies on a busmans holiday.

It is interesting how uncreative "color revolution" operatives are: hardly anybody remember now all the reports about "FSB spetsnaz arriving to help Yanukovich to suppress Maidan"

It's Private Military Contractors, actually. Though I guess it's just a nicer-sounding term for the same thing. :D

Condottieri would sound way cooler though.

Not to worry Roman, I remember. And never fear, im sure they will have the opportunity to do it again shortly.

The problem is complete story was fake, despite of even Russian MOI badge demonstrated from Maidan stage (and all Ukrainian TV channels)

But who could blame them for this small trick

Interesting approach to the military, amnesty and no recriminations for any who do not support government. Should also apply to Chavista Bolivarian National Guard.

There isn't a non Chavista military in Venezuela. That doesn't mean they will line up behind Maduro, as the rank and file is as screwed up as the rest of the country by the economic chaos. In contrast to other countries in the zone, the Venezuelan armed forces see themselves as progressives so the rise of Chavez isn't a black swan.

Roman, with the amount of untruths from the Kremlin that are peddled, how should we know what lie to believe?

Interesting, the parliament chairman is replacing the corrupted and suspiciously elected president and gets support from Western countries. Someone might get an idea. Nancy Pelosi, are you online?

Cuban mercenaries are the thing in Venezuela. As Colombian guerillas. Russia is a very minor player in this matter.

Cubans seems like logical choice: they are native in local language, adapted to local climate, not far from home, well-trained, educated, ideologically "charged", relatively poor (making this job attractive = good work ethics), in good relations both with China and Russia.

Not going to work as there is no US Embassy in Washington :)

Nicolas Maduro wins the Michael Dukakis Award, given to left-of-center-politicians who make themselves look silly riding in an AFV:

Over the weekend, Venezuela's increasingly isolated President Nicolás Maduro took a trip to review various units of the country's armed forces, including the Venezuelan Army's 41st Armored Brigade and elements of the Venezuelan Marine Corps. The heavily staged visits included a photo op of Maduro and his wife riding in the turret of Chinese-made VN18 armored amphibious vehicle while it did donuts in the water at a naval base. The events were obvious propaganda to show his opponents at home and abroad that he continues to enjoy the loyalty of the bulk of the country's armed forces, a typical move for a dictator facing a popular challenge to their authority.

Cubans were of course operating in this role during the Cold War. Maduros greatest failure is putting peronal survival over the fate of the nation and that essentially makes everything a delaying tactic.

They are still doing that in Venezuela. Probably Castro supported Chavez with professional revolutionaries in exchange for cash and oil.

Definitely oil. Vez had a subsidy for Cubans for a long time, and that was just the above the board, stated thing. In fact as far as I know it never ended, though given the current output I bet it was curtailed a bit.

That said it isn't hard to believe that Wagner is there too given Russian investment in Maduro; they just probably are not as prolific as Cubans.

Just seen on Twitter:

Russia’s Lukoil, one of PdVSA’s main suppliers of oil products, froze its contract with Venezuela today. Moscow Corp. not prepared to risk ban from U.S. financial system for Maduro.

What role would Wagner be playing?

Isn't that pretty obvious? To provide personal guards for Maduro.

Just a thought - in case Maduro's army is compromised, and start losing support for him because he will run out of money eventually, Wagner will be his way out of the country.
