I have scope for that, it's those of Sam who don't get the Socialist paradise holidays who may have trouble.

New schedule proposal with small extension, 10 days there:

Thu 10/03 Day 0 Arrive New Orleans, overnight in NOLA
Fri 10/04 Day 1 NOLA stuff TBD, overnight in NOLA
Sat 10/05 Day 2 WW2 Museum and Battle of New Orleans Battlefield, overnight in NOLA
Sun 10/06 Day 3 USS Kidd, 10:00-12:00, 3 hours to Mobile, overnight Mobile
Mon 10/07 Day 4 USS Alabama, overnight in Mobile
Tue 10/08 Day 5 Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines/Mobile Maritime Museum?, overnight in Mobile
Wed 10/09 Day 6 1 hour to Pensacola Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum, overnight in Mobile
Thu 10/10 Day 7 6 hours to Orlando, stuff TBD (*), overnight in Orlando
Fri 10/11 Day 8 Kennedy Space flight center 1 hour east of Orlando, overnight in Orlando
Sat 10/12 Day 9 Depart from Orlando (**)
For further consideration:
(*) For Day 7, an alternative to "stuff TBD" could be to spend the morning in the Naval Aviation Museum, then continue to Orlando. Another alternative would be to stop at Tallahassee to visit the Automobile Museum, or even spend a night there in order to visit the Natural Bridge Battlefield, extending the schedule by one day more.
(**) 10/14 is Columbus Day. It may be necessary to advance the whole schedule a couple of days in order to avoid events, or perhaps we could spent 10/12 at, for instance, St. Augustine (one of the few places in Samland where 300 years is not a long time :) ), then depart Sunday. At the castle they do a historic weapons demonstration Fri, Sat, Sun at 1030. The city is 2/3 hours away from Orlando.
Some edition done:
Deleted the Baton Rouge overnight
Added link to Mobile Maritime Museum

Been to Morgan, up for Maritime Museum. My only visit was short, with then-gf and her energetic son.

Day 6 should be overnight in Pensacola rather than driving back to Mobile only to drive back east on the way to Orlando.

Depending on how things work out, I'll be there Saturday-Sunday (It's 2 hours to New Orleans for me). I'd like to do more, but our school calendar hasn't been finalized yet, and I'm not sure if we're having a Fall Break a couple weeks afterward.

The intention is to reduce the number of different hotels to a minimum, avoiding one nighters. However, if we are going to do several things around Pensacola, some of the Mobile night stays could be moved to Pensacola.

Were you to know your fall break schedule, and it being compatible with Markus's holidays, perhaps we all could agree in some schedule movement.

If we stay in the Orange Beach area, it ls only about a 30 min drive to Pensacola NAS and less than an hour to Mobile itself.

Currently a flight out from LHR to MSY returning from MCO to LHR via MIA is £590, £670 with hold luggage. I have no idea if that's good, bad or indifferent. It's a codeshare BA and American., slum economy class.

It would be nice to have some input by locals on the matter, especially about the places to visit in the Mobile area, and which ones could be accessed more easily from Orange Beach.

Not a bad price, but MIA is one of those airports that one should avoid. Did you try Google Flights? I found there are direct flights from Orlando to Gatwick, for about €70 more. If you must return to Heathrow, there is a connection via Chicago using a 787 for the transatlantic segment.

The Maritime Museum doesn't have a lot (or any that I can recall) military stuff and can easily be combined with a visit to the USS Alabama as they are within 10 mins of each other. Fort Gaines should probably be done on the way into Mobile from New Orleans. If we are early enough, we could take the ferry across Mobile Bay and do Fort Morgan as well.

Looking at the map, if we stay in Daphine on the east side of Mobile Bay, NAS Pensacola is about an hour while the USS Alabama is about 10 minutes, Fort Morgan is about 1 hour 20 minutes. If we stay somewhere in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, the USS Alabama is about an hour away while NAS Pensacola is 30 mins and Fort Morgan about a half hour. I don't think there's any point in staying in Mobile itself.

I agree with Sunday, avoid Miami at all costs. It is a horrid airport.

Sounds reasonable, and there are several hotels in Daphne. Perhaps we should select one in high ground, just in case.

Schedule proposal changed.
