Paul G. Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 A curious phenomenon here in the UK: Not just UK. Google "Stolen Valor". Plenty of US examples.
Chris Werb Posted October 12, 2018 Author Posted October 12, 2018 Not just UK. Google "Stolen Valor". Plenty of US examples. Ours are quite well documented https://www.arrse.co.uk/wiki/Category:Infamous_Walts

RETAC21 Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 "Did I tell you about my time in that elite unit, the Catering Corps? there I was, surrounded by pans and pots, up to my ears in beans, when..."
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 I knew an English guy whom claimed to have fought in the French Foreign Legion and met General DeGaulle. Nice guy, but mad as a hatter.
RETAC21 Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 (edited) Damn, I fell for the double Walt post! Edited October 12, 2018 by RETAC21
RETAC21 Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 Over here, we have had our share of them, and they are quite colorful: There's the false Mathausen survivor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enric_Marco The uber SS man, Miguel Ezquerra: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_Ezquerra and I would guess there will be more in the future as the volunteer forces consolidate, since, right now, there are still a bunch of people that did national service time and can tell a Sargeant from a General.
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 "Did I tell you about my time in that elite unit, the Catering Corps? there I was, surrounded by pans and pots, up to my ears in beans, when..." 'There I was, upside down, nothing on the clock, and still climbing'.
Roman Alymov Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 Problem of fake veterans was also problem in USSR and post-Soviet countries. In some cases, Nazi collaborators were pretending to be Red Army WWII decorated veterans.
bd1 Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 (edited) local Sputnik News agency branch had several stories published by a former GRU lt.-general , who turned out to be an former collective farm tractor driver. does this count? https://sputniknews.com/europe/201803161062591634-soviet-intelligence-skripal-poisoned-nonprofessionals/ Commenting on Skripal’s case, Lieutenant General William Rooda, who used to work in the intelligence services, said that he probably had many personal enemies, who could want him dead, as he had disclosed the identities of dozens of fellow agents to Britain’s MI-6. Although, according to the retired spy, many questions arise regarding the time and place of the attempted murder, as well as the weapon.READ MORE: Corbyn Agrees With May on Russia's Alleged Complicity in Ex-Spy Poisoning in UKRooda proceeded to say that the alleged attack on Skripal was “obviously” carried out by non-professionals or by professionals whose aim was not to murder him but to cause an international scandal. At the same time, he noted that military intelligence never used any extraordinary poison or toxic substances to secretly eliminate its enemies. Edited October 12, 2018 by bd1
Chris Werb Posted October 12, 2018 Author Posted October 12, 2018 As are ours. You have the better name for it. http://www.stolenvalor.comI think your cases tend to be con men with an obvious profit motive whereas ours are more likely to be sad weirdos. I think our Waltenkommando does better takedowns, but you're actually punishing the perpetrators. I wish we did that more here.
Corinthian Posted October 14, 2018 Posted October 14, 2018 Such sad sad lives they live.... Pathetic really.

We had one, if you would recall, who passed himself off as a Norse godling right in this forum, and he wasnt even one of our truly weird.
LT Ducky Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Norse godling? Don't remember that but I do recall something involving an airplane and a river.....
Panzermann Posted October 18, 2018 Posted October 18, 2018 One former SEAL outs 20 bogus SEALs per day. Wow! You'd think these jamokes would realize there is a database for those who went thru SEAL training. Many of these imposters do not do most basic research. Like proper arrangement of medals or how to wear uniform properly. Despite all the regulations being out there openly accessible. Or getting their stories wrong when and where they were in 'nam/Iraq/whereever despite many reports on actions out there. In Germany as a consequence of the at best passive indifference to Bundeswehr soldiers I have never heard of an impostor. Just nothing to gain from it in Germany and rather risking getting eggs thrown at them by peacelovers.
BansheeOne Posted October 18, 2018 Posted October 18, 2018 I've only ever met one. Must have been more than ten years ago because it was before I moved to Berlin, though it was there. I went along with some of my brothers to the place of a friend of brother #2's girlfriend. Said girlfriend's friend's boyfriend was a shifty type who tended to take advantage of her, like using her new car while letting her drive his old rustbucket etc., though I was completely ignorant of that since I didn't know either. Seems he was also claiming to have served as a Bundeswehr MP, and my brother #3 who actually was one started to ask him test questions about where he had trained and such. Obviously the guy happily agreed with the greatest nonsense posed to him, and proceeded to tell that he had been some general's driver in a Balkan deployment, but also a sniper, and his team was to have received a medal, but rejected it because of "that matter". I finally clued in what the purpose of this visit was and asked him what his rank had been. To which he replied with a wry smile "Ober ...". I guess that makes him a former waiter. To this day I can't figure out what he wanted to achieve with this sort of yarn, since as noted military service doesn't carry particular social weight in Germany; certainly not back at that time. Maybe he hoped to impress his girlfriend.
Panzermann Posted October 18, 2018 Posted October 18, 2018 "Ober ...". I guess that makes him a former waiter. Which can very well be the case. conscripts that were superflous were put on jobs like waiter in the officer's casino or janitor of the gym hall and such.
