She was a very committed catholic, in fact her brother was a Priest in a mission in Africa. She stopped going, partly due to ill heath (she had cancer) mainly due to her disgust at the child molestation claims. So if the Catholic church is starting to lose committed believers like that, it wants to worry. Maybe they figure they dont need to if they have strong congregations in the third world. Corinthian
I am getting tired of hearing the homily every Sunday mass here which is mostly "God loves you, and so you must love God and everyone else." The homilies are so shallow in that regard, I doze off. If you listened to some of the homilies here, and you were a very logical person, the homilies won't make any logical sense. CT96
To quote my own pastor from a while back on that "just love everyone" routine (it was profound enough I made sure to get the exact quote at the time): "The gospel of inclusion, of love you just the way you are no matter what you do, the gospel of let's all work for world peace - it's not wrong, but it is only a half-gospel. - a gospel of love, but not holiness - that gospel would never have changed world history for 2000 years. That kind of message would never have needed Christ to die on the cross. No one would have killed Jesus for that message. That gospel never would have transformed the world. That is not good news to the poor; it's only good news to rich western intellectuals who think they know better. Poor Christians talk about the blood of Jesus, about his miracle power to bring sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf; his power to save us not by what we do in following his example, but by what he has done."-Reverand Clancy Nixon

Religion is an emotion someone said. Niemöller maybe? It is not about logic, it is all about the feels. About the community, the ruituals to bond the community together and accompany life events. DougRichards
An arsehole seems to have gotten away with it, at least on earth. He is yet to deal with Divine Judgement: Vengeance is mine, says the Lord. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-12-06/philip-wilson-former-archbishop-conviction-quashed/10589198 Former Adelaide archbishop Philip Wilson is set to walk free after his conviction for concealing child sexual abuse was quashed by a judge.Key points:The judge said there were doubts Philip Wilson had been told about the abuseAfter the verdict was announced an abuse survivor yelled out: 'Bullshit, this is a disgrace'Wilson was the most senior Catholic to be charged with concealing child sexual abuse The judge said Father Wilson was an honest and consistent witness and he had reasonable doubts that he had been told about the abuse.Father Wilson was excused from attending court today in order to avoid a "media scrum" but did appear via video link. The 68-year-old was the highest-ranking Catholic in the world to be convicted of the concealing child sexual abuse and had been serving a minimum sentence of six months home detention.Newcastle Local Court convicted Father Wilson in May of concealing abuse committed by paedophile priest Jim Fletcher in the Hunter Valley dating back to the 1970s.It found that in 1976 a victim, Peter Creigh, confided in Father Wilson that he had been sexually abused, yet Father Wilson failed to report it to police when Fletcher was charged with other child sex offences in 2004. Before overturning Father Wilson's conviction, Judge Roy Ellis said the former archbishop was honest and consistent."There were very honest features of his evidence to provide a strong platform for him to be an honest witness," he said."[He] did not attempt to blacken the name of Peter Creigh and allege he was a liar."He was clearly an intelligent and articulate witness.Judge Ellis said the crown failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt, upheld the appeal and then ordered that the clergyman be released."There is no proper basis on which I can rely to reject the evidence of [Father Wilson]."At that point a Catholic clerical abuse survivor stood up in the courtroom gallery and shouted, "Bullshit, that is a disgrace".The crown has indicated it will appeal the decision.Accuser's evidence 'inconsistent'In his judgment, Judge Ellis highlighted what he called inconsistencies in a Mr Creigh's evidence. He also questioned Mr Creigh's memory in relation to the timing of his alleged conversation with Father Wilson, when he claimed he raised the alarm about Fletcher's abuse. He also said there were inconsistencies in relation to the length of the conversation and frequency of the abuse."Was the duration of the abuse, six or nine months?" the judge asked. (My comment - six or nine months? Big Frigging Deal what does three months one way or the other after 30 years or so matter? )Media pressure weighed heavily on courtJudge Ellis said the media interest in the case had been intense."This is not a criticism of media, but intended or not, the mere presence of large amounts of media from all around Australia and the world carries with it a certain amount of pressure on the court," judge Ellis said. The judge also had highlighted he had to give himself directions or warnings while he assessed the evidence in the appeal fairly. "As a tribunal of fact, I am expected to use my indicators and qualities of reasoning and my common sense," he said "I must act impartially and fearlessly and must not let sympathy sway my judgement." In a statement, Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide said it welcomed the conclusion of "a process that has been long and painful for all concerned"."We now need to consider the ramifications of this outcome." DougRichards
I don't know how far I can take this, excepting to point people in the right direction. Australian media at the moment is full of articles saying that the media wants to report on a certain conviction of a certain prominent Australia on certain charges, but a Court has imposed a media prohibition, in Australia - all states and territories - so that they cannot report. https://www.news.com.au/national/victoria/courts-law/the-story-we-cant-report/news-story/0231fd614b01a7d6cfb808c8ea1b1b83 The articles also note that foreign websites are not under that prohibition and have been reporting on the conviction. Meanwhile, maybe unrelated, Australian media has been reporting that Cardinal George Pell has been removed from the Pope's 'cabinet'. I will let you join the dots and google to your hearts' content. One must say though, it is a really big club with about a billion members. The pope cannot know everything going on in how many thousand dioceses? Meanwhile Duterte opens hunting season on useless bishops: Duterte Incites Killing 'Useless' Bishops as 'All They Do is Criticise'Asia & Pacific 13:26 06.12.2018 (updated 13:27 06.12.2018)Get short URL5102Rodrigo Duterte is well known for his controversial relationship with the Catholic church – at one point he even called God “stupid”, having questioned the concept of original sin and other key tenets of the religion. In a Wednesday speech at the presidential palace, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte slammed his country's Catholic bishops as “useless fools”, calling on his people to “kill them”."These bishops that you guys have, kill them. They are useless fools. All they do is criticise", the Filipino leader was quoted as saying.Duterte then branded the Catholic Church as “the most hypocritical institution” and said that his God was different from the one Catholics believed in.“I never said I do not believe in God. What I said is your God is stupid, mine has a lot of common sense. That’s what I told the bishops. I never said I was an atheist”.It was not the first time Duterte, a baptised Catholic, used strong words against the bishops. The Philippines president was previously angered by some bishops' open criticism of his policy to crackdown on drugs. In November, the Philippine Star reported that Duterte called out Bishop Pablo Virgilio David of Caloocan, saying that "I suspect you are into illegal drugs".In summer, the eccentric leader referred to God as “stupid” and a “son of a b*tch”, suggesting that if there’s “one single witness” who can prove God’s existence by showing him a selfie together, he’d immediately step down from office. The Philippines is a Catholic-majority nation, with over 86 percent of the population (some 76 million people) practicing Roman Catholicism.https://sptnkne.ws/kkfS
