Stuart Galbraith Posted August 8, 2023 Author Posted August 8, 2023 Thats interesting. Wonder how they got hold of that?

Mike1158 Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 (edited) Rather reminds me of a replica tale from a while ago. I think of this whenever I wonder about the plausibilityn of recreating these and the real flights of fancy from the times. https://www.carscoops.com/2016/08/bugatti-airplane-replica-final-test/ https://engineswapdepot.com/?p=7262 A tragic end to an epic endeavour. Stuart Galbraith Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 Some wonderful but probably crazy Germans, are building a replica of a Dornier X flying boat...
Stuart Galbraith Posted August 27, 2023 Author Posted August 27, 2023 I love the engine room on this thing, it's like a scene from Metropolis.
sunday Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 Likely not recovered, but nobody could resist a good Sea Fury video
shep854 Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 At the other end, the British elegance of the Super Rapide. Yes, there's some restoration footage. https://youtu.be/Xuf1FcH2ERg
DB Posted August 30, 2023 Posted August 30, 2023 Well Shep, if that lottery ticket comes in, get yourself over here. https://www.classic-wings.co.uk/dragon-rapide-flights/

Stuart Galbraith Posted September 7, 2023 Author Posted September 7, 2023 There are several Vickers Vimy replicas about. One flew over my house.
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 5, 2023 Author Posted October 5, 2023 Efforts to build a flying replica of the near extinct Whirlwind fighter.
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 11, 2023 Author Posted October 11, 2023 Well there is something you haven't seen before...
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 11, 2023 Author Posted October 11, 2023 Or this probably. Shame it wasn't preserved.
Mike1158 Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 I take it the Whirlwind will be for static display?
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 13, 2023 Author Posted October 13, 2023 They do say they want to fly it, but Perigrines are out obviously.
Mike1158 Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 Looking around for an alternative but the whole size problem rears up.
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 14, 2023 Author Posted October 14, 2023 I mean, they could go electric. By the time they get it finished, it might be a realistic option. TBH, if it ends up static with 2 plastic replicas of Perigrines on it, Id not be too worried. At least one of my favourite Airfix kits has come back from the dead.
Mike1158 Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 (edited) Oddly enough there are some moto and car motors up to that level without too much bother. Edited October 14, 2023 by Mike1158
Stuart Galbraith Posted October 15, 2023 Author Posted October 15, 2023 I wonder if a V12 out of a Jag, or even a CVRT, would be adequate. The main problem would be the reduction gear I would think.

I mean, you could stick in a pair of Dodge Hellcat engines (6.2L supercharged, 717 hp to 807 hp each, depending on model). 875lbs each, about $17k US in a crate. Or, if you could find a way, a couple of Dodge Hellcat Redeye engines, with 1000+ HP (though they are really designed for drag runs, no idea how they run for long periods). I have no idea what the reduction gearing requirements would be.
