bojan Posted March 7, 2019 Author Posted March 7, 2019 (edited) Kinda.Territorial Defense was connected to a cities/towns/large villages, even larger factories. Think about cross between US National Guard (under command of the republics, instead of the federal level) and British Home Guard. In case of war, those would form units that would secure their area from saboteurs/paratroopers etc. Hence various independent Co/Plts and even sections - since those were based in smaller villages/towns, where there would be not enough manpower for Brigade or Odred. However, there were designated stay-behind parts of Territorial Defense. They usually had a better armament, more-less equal to the army level (in Slovenia, parts of Croatia and Serbia in particular). Other than them there were multiple levels of "stay behind" units:- Light Infantry Brigades/Odreds and Regiments from a regular army. They had designation "Partisan" since late 1960s.- Parts of the Territorial Defense (they were given designation "Partisan" in the early '80s)- Parts of the "special purpose units" - parts (about 1/2) of paratroopers had a 'light" organization and were supposed to be inserted behind enemy lines to reinforce other stay-behind units.- Parts of the police and police special forces. Simon Tan Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 Were Yugoslav commands regional or non-geographic?
bojan Posted March 7, 2019 Author Posted March 7, 2019 It changed during the time, but in '80s there were 7 army areas, that were supposed to become fronts in case of war. So regional, but there was a large degree of inter-mixing that was supposed to happen at a borders between army areas/fronts. TO was regional, it's main strength was that they knew local terrain well. They were not supposed to be used more than 15-25km from a home place (for a larger units, smaller units were mostly just supposed to provide local security). Air force, most of armored and mechanized units existed to die gloriously in counterattacks buying time for the mobilization plan to be implemented.Only "Inner bastion" (Bosnia, parts of western and south-western Serbia, Montenegro, southern part of Croatia and Slovenia were expected to be actively defended. In case of "Czechoslovakian scenario", or WP invading w/o war with NATO It was expected that Novi Sad would fall in a 3-5 days, Zagreb in a 5-7 days, Belgrade (actively defended) in 2 weeks."Inner bastion" was estimated to be able to last about month w/o suffering critical breakthrough. After that, either NATO came to help (NATO did have plans for that), war ended or resistance would move to a partisan warfare. In case of all around NATO-WP war expectations were somewhat higher, about 2-3 times longer active resistance duration was expected.
bojan Posted March 8, 2019 Author Posted March 8, 2019 (edited) ParatroopersWhile there were individual paratrooper companies formed as soon as 1945. (from a 191 former personal of the british trained 1st Paratrooper Battalion that was disbanded mid-1945 and about 200 Soviet trained personal.) they were organized in line of SMG company, w/o own dedicated organization. In 1946. 46th Parachute Battalion was formed and in 1954. it was incorporate in the newly formed 63rd Parachute Brigade. In line of thinking about nuclear war larger paratrooper units were considered no longer useful, and in late 1959. brigade was disbanded and split into three Parachute bns. However, 63rd Parachute Brigade was reformed in late 1967., with a different tasks:- to serve as a regular parachute infantry- to be used as a rapid reaction force in newly formed helicopter-mobile units- to be used for reinforcing "partisan" formations. So it needed 3 separate ToE organizations, and got them. So, in total we have:1945. org (British), used by 1st Parachute battalion until disbanded in August 1945.1945. bojan Posted March 8, 2019 Author Posted March 8, 2019 Yes.It is not clean however which rifles "British" organization had, only pic available shows Mausers (while LMGs were Bren, SMGs were Sten, ATW was PIAT etc), but that was a parade picture, so not fully relevant.

bojan Posted March 31, 2019 Author Posted March 31, 2019 (edited) In 1967. 63rd Parachute brigade was reformed. As an temporary armament (due the both domestic and paratrooper weapons programs being late) some 2-3000 AKMS and ~500 RPKS were acquired. Also, automatic pistols were planned for a some roles, initially Stechkin, but after few tests it has shown that automatic fire is basically useless on that one. Then MAC-11 was tested, also found not good enough. Finally, in 1973. vz.61 Skorpion was accepted for service. Meanwhile personnel that was supposed to have automatic pistol usually had either standard pistol or AR. 1967. bojan Posted April 17, 2019 Author Posted April 17, 2019 1972. Parachute (Airmobile) Infantry CompanyThis was practically same as 1971. org, but a support platoon was reinforced by adding RCL section, but it lost 1 x mortar and 1 x ATW. bd1 Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 did the territorials-stay-behind units wore uniforms? i read some old RAND report from 70´s that compared territorial organisations and Finns were saying that their model differers from yugoslavian because their troops are all in uniforms, hence protected by geneva conventions
bojan Posted April 17, 2019 Author Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) Yes. IDK where that report got idea that they were not supposed to use uniforms. Edited April 17, 2019 by bojan
bd1 Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 there was some 1973 rand report on yugo TO which i have not read yet, bit later was the rand report that mentioned this . my first thought was that maybe the factory protection etc units got armband with letters TO on their everyday clothing , like ww2 partisan  thanks
bojan Posted April 17, 2019 Author Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) No, they had own, blue uniforms. They were also not a stay-behind element. Edited April 17, 2019 by bojan

bojan Posted April 20, 2019 Author Posted April 20, 2019 (edited) Thank you, I figured that when I have the source material why not post it, it is not like you can find it anywhere on the net   In 1981. new org was introduced for a "line" Parachute Infantry Company. It replaced 1971. org. It introduced two snipers per platoon, but Co HQ lost it's scout-snipers, but got two runners/scouts. Also some terminology changed.  1981.
