Company level formations (and more) in Yugoslavia 1945-1993

Recommended Posts

Originally 8x56R Mannlicher. Conversion to .303 used Bren barrels and magazines since case head diameter is practically the same. Those bastards stayed "in use" (mostly storage) among the airfield protection troops, since AF had loads of .303.

Major rifle/MG calibers used after 1950s:

7.9x57mm

7.62x54R - used only in the tank MGs until 1985

30-06 - in use in armored units, tank MGs and M1 Garand rifles of the mechanized infantry in the '50s. Limited service, M1919s were converted to 7.9x57mm in late '50s and Garands retired (IIRC there was only 6000 of those). Unconverted infantry 1919s stayed in storage until end of Yugoslavia and saw sporadic use in Bosnia.

7.9x33mm - in use by paratroopers, main caliber until 1967. and aquisition of AKMS and RPKS for paratroopers as an intermediate armament until final standardization.

7.62x39mm - formally in use since 1961., but real widespread use from 1967.

.303 - stayed in the airfield defense role until late 1960s, was used in the prison service until early '80s. Also used by AF.

8mm Breda - stayed in use in the coastal forces, all 8mm Breda MGs were relegated to a coastal defense role where they stayed in reserves until 1991.

7.62x51mm - adopted by both police and army special forces for G3 SG1 sniper rifles.

5.56mm - used by army and police special forces

.30 Carbine - Paras used it in the '50s.

Pistol/SMG calibers:

7.62x25mm - most common one

.32 ACP - in use by various pistols used by higher ranks. Mass introduction to army service with the acquisition of vz.61 Skorpion in 1971.

.380 ACP - mostly police use and higher ranks pistols until (almost incidental) introduction of MAC-11 SMGs in 1969. Those saw both army and police use.

9x19mm - stayed in use in pistols until late '60s, MP-40 and Beretta SMGs until mid-60. Beretta were later used by the police until mid-70s. Saw re-introduction again when MP-5s were acquired (for both police and army) in 1977.

.45 ACP - 3rd most common pistol caliber until late 1960s, and common SMG caliber. Thompsons were used by the army until 1969. (mostly by the border guards after late '50s) when those were transferred to a territorial defense inventory. Police used them until 1992-93.

1965/1969*/1975**. Tank Company, T-34***

20/3mm AA guns were introduced in 1958., replacing 20/4mm M38V(n) (Flakvierling 38). In the infantry units they were first introduced in F-62 Infantry Brigade, which got AA battery with 3 platoons (total 12 guns) for A qualification units (B and R kept using older guns). In 1961. domestic production of 20/3mm started.

Next Infantry Bn org, F-71 lost Mixed AA platoon. Bn instead got 4-men SAM section with 3 x SA-7 launcher , and Brigade/Regiment level AD was reinforced.

In case of Infantry Brigade it was possible to split one AA battery to platoons and attach each 4-gun platoon to one Infantry Bn.

Integral Bn level AA guns would return in 1981. with Light AD Artillery-missile platoon, with 4x 20/1mm M75 AA guns and 3 x SA-7 launchers.
