bojan Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 (edited) I have started posting those already in other topic, but since this part of hobby has grown since, some of the data I have posted is very basic etc, so here it is, in the hopefully complete set. First a a foreword. There were following types of infantry organizations in former Yugoslav military: - Pesadijska ceta - Infantry company - basic infantry that does not have enough generic motor transport at Co. level for entire company (it most often had enough motor transport for one platoon and Co HQ). - Automaticarska ceta - SMG company - armed almost entirely with SMGs (it still had LMG in every SMG section), and less support weapons those were intended for close protection of vital assets (higher command Hqs, Artillery groups etc) and for urban fighting. They did not have much support weapons, including lacking platoon support section (but not always). - Ceta mornaricke pesadije - Naval infantry company. It was based on SMG company until '70s, later on standard rifle company. As a general rule they were well equiped with short-range support weapons and especially AT weapons (one of their roles was anti-landing force) - Brdska ceta - Hill (infantry) company - is intended for operating on difficult terrain generally considered to be a difficult going for armored units. Lighter weapons than regular Infantry company - Planinska ceta - Mountain (infantry) company - is intended to operate in very difficult terrain (generally considered non-passable for armored units) - Laka pesadijska (partizanska) ceta - Light infantry (partisan) company - has less and lighter support weapons, often lacks platoon level support. It is used for rear area duties or is a basis for stay-behind units. - Motorizovana pesadijska ceta - Motorized infantry company - it has enough motor transport for entire company. - Mehanizovana pesadijska ceta - Mechanized infantry company - it is completely mounted in the armored APCs/IFVs. - Padobranska pesadijska ceta - Paratrooper infantry company - as a name says - Ceta vojne policije - Military police company - Posebna ceta vojne policije - Special (purpose) military police company - basically special forces - Granicarska ceta - Border guard company - as the name says. Unlike some other border guard organizations those had active role in organized defense and battalions were equipped with anti-tank companies for that role. - Ceta Teritorijalne odbrane - Territorial Defense Company - it was not formally under army command but under republic command (somewhat similar to a US NG). It had very variable structure, and variety in the menpower and weapons. Edited January 26, 2023 by bojan
bojan Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 (edited) Infantry companyAt the end of WW2 Yugoslav Army (later renamed Yugoslav People Army) used hodge-podge of the various infantry company organizations. Most common were "Old type" (based on pre-ww2 Royal Yugoslav Army F-40 1940 organization), "Soviet type" (used mainly with the units armed by Soviets and using Soviet weapons) and "British type" (used by units trained by British). Those formations quickly got reworked to a newer ones, based on both experience of WW2 but with the influence of the current trends also. There were multiple organizations:1945 - 3 types, "Old", "Soviet" and "British"19471954196219691971198119851993So, on average they changed in every 6-7 years. That is not to say that those actually were reworked every couple of years - most commonly there were two formations serving paralel, as some of those were of the more specific role (1969 and 1981 were more close-combat anti-armor oriented, while 1971 and 1985 are more general).General replacements:1945 - "Soviet" lasted until early '50s, "British" and "Old" until late '40s1947 replaced 1945 "British" and 1947 "Old" as a majority organization, lasted until late '50s1954 replaced 1945 "Soviet" and partially 1947, lasted until mid '60s.1962 was slightly modified 1954 and it finished replacing 1947, lasted until 1st half of 1970s1969 (it is possible it was actually introduced few years earlier, about 1966-67) was a new type, it replaced 1962 as more specific close combat anti-tank organization, lasted until about 19811971 replaced 1962 in a more general organization, lasted until mid-'80s.1981 replaced 1969 as a more dedicated AT organization, lasted until about 1992-931985 replaced 1971 as a more general organization - lasted until 1994-951993 replaced both 1981 and 1985 however, as a more "general" company. SMG company had somewhat simpled development, but we still have following organizations:1945 "Soviet" organization194719541965 With the introduction of automatic/assault rifle (M70) SMG companies disappeared. and in 1981. organizations there is no mention of them. Basics about infantry section. One of the major lessons of the WW2 were that:- infantry section main firepower came from a LMG- SMGs are excellent for the close range firepower- Rifles are of the limited use except at the hands of well trained sharpshooters.Organization reflected that, even if sometimes certain classes of weapons (SMGs in particular) were lacking. Rifle section is led by a section leader, he was always armed with SMG/AR later Best shooter in section is given rifle (in theory this could be scoped, but due the lack of sniper rifles it most often was not, so his potential was kinda wasted).Sniper rifles tricked slowly to a infantry company, since more specialized units were a greater priority. In 1945, 1947, 1954, 1962 and 1969 orgs. company has a single sniper at a Co HQ (through in 1954, 1962 and 1969 org there was a possibility that one riflemen in every 1st rifle section of a rifle platoon be issued scoped rifle instead of regular one). In 1971 this is increased to 2, and so is in 1981. Only in 1985. org did every infantry section get designated marksman with a scoped rifle (M76) Second best scoring rescuit got LMG. Accurate use of LMG and manuevaring with it was especially stressed in training. LMG had 2-men crew - gunner and assistant. In 1971. org. 1st rifle section in every rifle platoon was reinforced with an additional LMG (and called "Reinforced rifle section"). By the 1973. LMG replacement by SAW (M72) has started - ironically this was not reflected in formal company orgenization, but in the addition to a section LMG gunner manual, that noted that instead of single M53 LMG with gunner and assistant section could have 2 M72 SAW with single gunner per gun. In that case previous assistant was to be retrained as a gunner.Since this coincidences with 1971 org, sections with a single LMG got them replaced first, while 1st "reinforced" rifle section with 2 x M53 LMG kept them until 1971. org was replaced by newer ones. Initially, in 1945 organization rifle section had only 1 SMGs (due the lack of those). It increased in 1947 org to a 2, 4 in 1954 org and 5 in 1962. It will drop to a 4 due the reduction of size of the rifle section from 10 to 9 in 1969. In 1971. rearmament with ARs started - section SMG gunners were first to get those (they were called SMG gunners despite being armed with ARs until 1981. organization). Riflemen number reduced in sections gradually - 7 in 1945, 6 in 1947, 3 in 1954, 3 in 1962 (1954 org had a dedicated grenadier, while in 1962 org every rifle was supposed to have rifle grenade attachment, so despite increase in number of SMG gunners number of riflemen stayed the same) and 3 in 1969/71 org. Rifles issued were initially various types, but by 1947 only various Mausers and Mosins stayed in use by a regular infantry, rest being relegated to a mobilization reserve. By 1948. production of M48 rifle started and it replaced Mosins (by 1952-53) and gradually rest of the Mausers (by the mid-1950s), relegating those to a mobilization reserves.Since plan for introduction of semi-auto (and later automatic rifle) were postponed multiple times for a myriad of reasons, introduction of "interim measure", M59/66 rifle started only in 1967. 1969. org was first one that notes semi-auto rifle as a weapon of riflemen. When automatic rifle (M70) was introduced (1971 org is the first one that notes it), it has first replaced SMGs. Only in 1981. org did whole rifle section get those, but soldiers in support plt still had M59/66. 1985. org is the first one that uses only M70 rifles as a personal weapons. Pistols - conclusion of the WW2 was that pistol is extremely limited as a weapon, and that everyone who is directly in the combat should be issued something else. So, following that idea, only medics, Co commanders MG/LMG gunners had pistols initially. However it was found out that some weapon gunners (AT weapons, mortars) were too much inconvenienced in their primary role by other weapons, so pistols were reintroduced for those. This eventually led to a adoption of the automatic pistol (Vz.61 Skorpion) in late '60s. Those were however more common in other more specialized units, and only in 1985. org did they appear in the infantry as a personal weapon of Co Cmd and his 2inC, as well as truck drivers attached to company. Infantry companyMajor reorganization, replacing 1971. platoon as "universal" infantry company, but with more AT capability- Support platoon was redesignated as a AT platoon, mortars were formally removed from Co to a Bn level, but when company is deployed in the front line they would always be attached to a company. "Frontline company" would have between 1 and 3 mortar sections attached (2, 4 or 6 x 82mm mortar).- every Rifle section finally got sniper (DM) rifle (which was planned from early '70s but more specialized units had a first pick on sniper rifles)- M80 LAWs were introduced as a short range AT weapon (they already appeared in the 1983. addendum to a 1981 org, but that one "school formantion" not a combat formation)- Motor transport was reorganized, replacing two light vehicles with trailers with a single truck.- In 1990. org MGs were changed to M84 from M53, and MG gunners lost their pistols, since M84 can be used by a single man even with large ammo box- 1985 and 1987 has 1 x SAW per section, 1990 has 2.- 1987 and 1990. has no NBC scout in the HQ.- In 1985 and 1987 drivers have AP, in 1990 they have AR AP - automatic pistol Company HQ - 9/8 men - 4/3 x AR, 3 x AP, 2 x P, 1 x LAW - Company commander - AP - Co Cmd 2inC/Political officer - AP - Co Jr.Officer - AR - Medic - P - NBC scout - AR (only in 1985 org) - radioman - P - runner x 2 - AR - driver - AP, truck Rifle Platoon x 3 - 36 men - 3 x MG, 3/6 x SAW, 3 x SR, 26/23 x AR, 1 x P, 13 x LAW - Platoon commander - AR - Medic - P Rifle Section x 3 - 8 men - 1/2 x SAW, 1 x SR, 6/5 x AR, 4 x LAW - Section leader - AR - SAW Gunner x 1/2 - SAW - Sniper - SR - Riflemen x 5/4 - AR, LAW (R1 is section 2inC) MG Section - 10 men, 3 x MG, 7 x AR, 1 x LAW - 1985. org also has 3 x P, since MG was still not changed from M53 to M84 - Section leader - AR - MG gunner x 3 - MG - Assistant x 3 - AR - Ammo bearer x 3 - AR (ammo bearer 1 carries LAW) AT Platoon - 33 men - 2 x 82mm RCL, 8 x ATW, 20 x AR, 2 x AP, 11 x P, 2 x Truck - Platoon commander - AR - Driver - AP - Medic - P AT Section x 2 - 9 men - 4 x ATW, 4 x P, 5 x AR - Section leader - AR - AT gunner x 4 - ATW, P - Assistant x 4 - AR RCL Section - 12 men - 2 x 82mm RCL, 2 x P, 9 x AR, 1 x AP - Section leader - AR - RCL gunner - P - RCL crew x 8 (no specific designation of duties in this org) - AR - Driver - AP Total strength - 149/148 (9/8 + 3 x 36 + 33) men - 2 x 82mm RCL, 8 x ATW, 9 x MG, 9/9/18 x SAW, 9 x SR, 102/101/95 x AR, 5/5/2 x AP, 23/23/14 x P, 40 x LAW, Also, if deployed company would have Mortar section x 1-3 - 9 men - 2 x 82mm mortar, 2 x P, 1 x AP, 7 x AR - Section leader - AR - Gunner - 82mm mortar, P - Mortar crew x 8 (again, no specific duties given in this org, one is also a driver) - AR Edited July 2, 2019 by bojan
