We've discussed the state of frigate/destroyer sized combatants before, of course, with the Australian,Canadian and UK procurements of particular interest.

The MoD halted the Type 31e competition recently due to concerns over the competitiveness of the bids.

The Babcock led option is Arrowhead, based off the Danish Iver Huitfeldt design, whilst BAe Systems and Cammel Laird are offering Leander.

The Leander website launched recently, here http://www.leanderfrigate.com

Different lengths are available, 99m to 120m, whuch makes it comparable with arrowhead where at least two different lengths have been showcased.

Still seems kind of soon to resurrect Leander as a class name...

Do I sound old? :P

It does and you do ( :P ), but the 1931 HMS Leander was scrapped in 1949, only ten years before work started on the frigate HMS Leander which entered service in 1963. I'm not sure when the new Leander's will enter service, but the frigate, F109, was sunk as a target in 1989, 29 years ago - there will be at least a 30 year gap between the named ships existences and longer between F109's departure from service and the new ship's service entry.

Wonder if either design would work for the USN's future frigate requirement?

The 31e is not remotely as capable and is less survivable than any of the contenders for the USN contract.

I think one could reasonably suggest that the type 26 success is in part due to the US obsessing over the LCS, with Burkes being too big and not ASW focussed.

Good name for a Frigade. But judging by the paint scheme for a horrible moment I thought the lead unit would be HMS Austin Powers.

Hope Cammel Laird wins it personally.

There was an interesting suggestion that "trouble" with the Type 31 could lead the navy towards enhancing the OPVs they're building so they can be used as "temporary frigates". Of course, this was not in any way a possible play to have those take the very low role and creep up the capability of the T31 when it does arrive.

What trouble?
