What was a reason for that?

Fuck if I know.  I surmise it was to reduce command and control confusion to the barest minimum.  Not only did we advance nearly shoulder to shoulder, we did so at a pedestrian pace.  It was totally absurd to us.  When we trained in the relatively confined environment of Hohenfels Training Area (Largest US Army maneuver training area in Germany) we always kept at least 50 meters apart, usually further.  Much further.

The M24s at the 45 second mark, that could have been 7th US corps February 1991.

Thanks for posting this Sunday.

Chieftain's videos are always worth watching, bonus with this one is no annoying WoT ads plastered through it !

The two videos explain a lot about how/why the Austrian armoured force evolved from 1955 onwards and the curator certainly knows his stuff. An impressive collection...I'll have to go to Vienna if I ever make it over to Europe again.

Yes, it is a very interesting video. Doctrine, peculiarities of the Jaguar tank destroyer, internal room in the M60 vs Leopard 2... Really interesting.

About seeing the collection, go visit their website first, as the Tank Hall is not always open. Ask Harold and me how do we know it...

Manic is simply wrong about the closeness of those tanks at the 15ish minute mark of "Courage Under Fire".  We absolutely were that close together during Desert Storm.  Fifty meters, no more and usually closer.  Tactically speaking, we took everything we'd been training to do for the last several decades, and tossed it in a burn barrel.

Huh. OK, I sit corrected. Seems odd, though.

Well, there's one aspect that wasn't covered at all, and that's the film director's/director's of photograhy perspective. If you want to show a tank platoon, or even an entire company advancing, and they're supposed to be bigger than little specks on the screen, you have to reduce distances. You can't film the action from 5km distance with a monster tele, the set organization would probably be a nightmare. So it's "everybody drive closer together, please!"

It's the exact opposite with the vehicle crew. You need a set that removes turret walls so you can stick a camera into the actors' faces. They can't be actually looking into the sights, because then you can't see their faces.

From what I remember we were spread apart pretty much like normal, but we definitely were moving much more slowly than we did in FTXs.  The different thing for us was that we had MCLCs,  mine plows, and rollers lined up to create two breach lanes which we had never done in training.

Well, I have considered altering my style a bit, I know it comes across as a bit too lectury, but I haven't really managed to come up with anything which is natural. So, folks will just have to sit through it for the content.

On other matters, I'm interviewing the head of PEO GCS and NGCV CFT next week. Wed, at 8pm Eastern, talking about current US procurement systems.

I find the changes of volume and the emphasis on selected words very useful for keeping oneself awake when one is tired.

Already commented that to Harold Jones when you started with the videos, and he said something about tricks for instructing enlisted personnel.

I find your style (and the YouTube Prerun) interesting and easy to follow.  Your professionalism is refreshing, given some of the other gimmicky channels (hand puppets, anime mascots, etc

I like the long form Q&A sessions at your (Manic's) desk. Not to everyone's taste because "longform", but tl;dw should apply only to boring things, and your content is not.

Compare with Drachinifel, which is also always interesting content, but his delivery sends me to sleep, which I realise is my loss.

I really like your style and humour, I don't see a need to change anything and big thank you for doing it.

Agreed.

I have three and a half decades of experience working in television (behind the camera) and Chieftain is terrific.

He cheats!  No beer gut...

Whilst this is true, I would suggest that the need to do some kind of knee-wiggle to steer the thing means that he doesn't actually fit at all.

Even if I was thinner there's no way on earth you'd get me trying the passenger seat, for the reasons stated.

Indeed, though it should be a great job opportunity for double amputees...
