BansheeOne Posted May 10, 2018 Author Posted May 10, 2018 While we're bringing out the big guns to entertain the troops:
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 Someone wanted more tanks, well here we are. Vickers Defence Systems sales video for Challenger 2 set to Gustav Holst 'Mars Bringer of War' from his planet suite. Tank Porn at its very finest.
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 I wasnt sure whether to post the following. For some time ive been listening to a group called 'Negativland', whom are less a group than exceptionally talented people ripping other peoples recordings, manipulating them and turning them into original work. The best known example is when they parodied U2's 'still havent found what im looking for' and promptly got sued. Though Negativlands version was certainly more entertaining. Anyway, this is the result of their sampling. Personally I think its barely musical at all, but it does have a strangely strident appeal, for me at least.
Gregory Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 (edited) My favorite as of late. Edited May 11, 2018 by Gregory
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Beginning of this is disturbingly like the Action Man advert.
BansheeOne Posted May 11, 2018 Author Posted May 11, 2018 The 80s were of course a bonanza of dire warnings of nuclear war. Unfortunately there seems to be no video for the Hollies' classic "Soldier's Song" other than concert recordings and homemade lyrics videos. But here's Stan Ridgeway's ghost story from Vietnam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXKIBYnM_9Q
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I listen to a Cold War themed Youtube selection when I work (ok, so im very sad), and these two popped up on me. Both I think have exceptional videos. Fishbone i'd never even heard of before, and it defied my belief American's didnt know how to do Ska. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t039p6xqutU
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 And of course, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and 'Two Tribes'. This one was interesting in that the 'Air attack warning' at the beginning is narrated by Patrick Allen, whom is reprising the narrator role he undertook for the Government 'Protect and survive' information films. Ironically, it was still supposed to be secret at the time.
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 And last one from me, because I dont want to fill the thread up with my stuff. This was a good one, particularly like the last line ' I don't think there are any Russians And there ain't no Yanks Just corporate criminals playin' with tanks'.
BansheeOne Posted May 11, 2018 Author Posted May 11, 2018 Another Swede, the recently much-too-young deceased Avicii.
JasonJ Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 (edited) All those nuke doom and gloom ones reminded me of this one, even if a tad OT. Edited May 11, 2018 by JasonJ
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Ok, just because you brought up REM, I rather like this one. Partly because its one of the most tuneful REM songs, partly because by the bands own admission they had no lyrics when they first sang it and were in fact, babbling. So you have a song about a cold war radio information station, and its basically babbling nonsense. Truly a song for the Information Age.
Coldsteel Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Tangentially to Status Quo, the delectable Kate Bush from the same year 1986. ... You remembered that but not this? In a similar vein
BansheeOne Posted May 11, 2018 Author Posted May 11, 2018 You remembered that but not this? Damn. I know "The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda" of course, but never heard the Redgum song. A bit similar in thought, if not style to Paul Hardcastle's "19". I looked for a proper video of the Dropkick Murphys' version of Eric Bogle's "Green Fields of France", but only found another homemade, if effective slideshow.
