All the talk about Nicki Minaj's physical resemblance to an M60 tank on the Combat Mission thread brought me to her controversial cartoon video for "Only". If you are offended only about the Nazi-suggestive imagery, at least you have your priorities straight. 😁

Another example of where every individual word can be read and understood, but when put together, it makes exactly no sense at all. there is no cultural intersection at all.

Not culture, not music, just filth.  Absolutely no redeeming qualities at all!

They said so about heavy metal, classic rock, and about blues, and about jazz, and someone probably said so about Mozart. I don't like it, but we will see what will survive next 50 years and what will be forgotten.

If I had to guess, the lyrics are talking about primarily a fetish for a sex mate that has power. IOW, the theme being power is sexy literally. Secondary theme is in-group/out group gang-hood. I don't think there is anything in there referring to any specific war conflict or geopolitical position. Military related imagery in the MV seems purely for wow rad effect to further illustrate the theme of a powerful person for fancying as a sex mate.

Point taken and you are correct of course. But that audio stench reeks way to far. I'll take basic Motown over her asinine stupidity any day.

OK but the attempt to hold Minaj and her skanky ass up as some sort of 'female empowerment role model (tm)' is more than a little disturbing

It was only an association between the M60A2 and a song titled "Starships" that I became aware of by viewing the "Resident Alien" TV series, nothing more.

Oh ... I seriously thought it was about her physique. I actually googled "Nicki Minaj M60 tank" to see if there was some kind of meme. That's how I found the video.

You have to admit there's at least a passing resemblance though. 😁

If you are going to set totalitarian iconography to a song, you may as well make sure it's a good song....

That kind of iconography is of course not unusual for music videos, from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" to the teaser for Michael Jackson's "HIStory" Album shot in Budapest, or even Lady Gaga's sweaty prancing henchmen in "Alejandro".

Sometimes folks get overly excited, of course. Over here, Michael Witt was criticized for the video to his cover of Silly's old DDR hit "Bataillon d'amour" looking too Riefenstahl, though the setting has clearly much more of a religious background. As has the one to "Gloria", about which he got a shitstorm for the scenes where Bundeswehr soldiers commit rape and murder.

Continuing on theme, and down memory lane. Bill Paxton as what appears to be a Wehrmacht NCO at 1:55.

Not averse to the culture that created the video, but after watching, I find myself agreeing.

Minaj's history (I initially mistyped "hostory", which though wryly amusing is a little too glib for me to leave it there) is not a particularly nice one.

On the face of it, her life experience is that life is about either exploiting others, or being exploited by others, sexually so it shouldn't be a big surprise that this is reflected in her music. It does seem to be a theme for black American Rap and Hip Hop - romantic love has no place it seems. Perhaps that's just a bit too brutally honest for this community, and probably too negative a message for any.

I dislike the way the message is given - it's uncultured and crass, no subtlety.

The unofficial anthem of Supermarine Aviation Ltd.

I've never heard Ultravox before. What did you make of that ending? I interpreted as old foes and comrades greeting each other in Valhalla

Perhaps the same message, in another form:

I am kinda grateful I did not understand most lyrics of English songs back then.

My second favourite video of this song;
