Research on the German cases also indicates that the "infectious while asymptomatic" claim may have been premature. Statements that the Chinese woman who brought it here wasn't ill upon arrival came from those who attended her class. In fact when reached back home in China (which took some time), she said she had already had limb pains, felt weary and taken paracetamol.

Researchers were however able to grow cultures from oropharingual swabs of patients showing only mild cold symptoms. Scientists from several nations also found that the virus can grow not only in the lungs, but also the oropharynx and the intestinal tract.

Let's be charitable and believe the number of confirmed deaths, bearing in mind that cause of death takes time to establish.

If 2 cases were found on the 100-ish repatriated Germans, that might suggest that Wuhan has a current infection rate of 2%, although uncertainty bars would be large. A stupidly simple WAG would in turn suggest that of the order of 100,000 people in/around Wuhan might be affected.

There are so many assumptions involved in the above that even giving a ROM estimate is being optimistic.

It could be added that the virus is not linked to religious or politically thinking. Among the infected and dead very well could include very pro-CCP people. So such factors like anti-CCP (democracy/freedom advocate) or separatism (Uyghus, etc.) aren't linked to the virus. Motivations for keeping the death count lower than reality would be similarly found else where such as to not spoil business environment or to not damage credibility of current regime in power with poor emergency handling arguments. But There's only so much info suppressing that the central government could do with this. Dead people have relatives. And Chinese in general do have a trait to speak up with only have been "harmonized" regarding some of the political related aspects. I think they would speak up on any dead not being accounted for and that the CCP having people speaking up for unaccounted for dead would also damage the credibility of the regime. So I don't think its likely that the official death count is far lower than reality.

A cruise ship of 3,700 people was quarantined for up to 14 days off from the coast of Yokohama. 10 people have been found positive of the virus.

TOKYO -- Ten people on board a Princess Cruises ship docked off the coast of Yokohama, near Tokyo, have been found to be infected by the new coronavirus, Japan's health ministry revealed Wednesday.

The ship is quarantined and medical officials have been checking the conditions of all passengers and crew members on board -- over 3,700 people -- since Monday, after a man who got off at an earlier stop in Hong Kong later tested positive for the virus.

According to Katsunobu Kato, Japan's Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, a total of 273 people who have either been diagnosed or had close contact with others who contracted the virus have had samples taken for coronavirus testing. More than 30 people have received their results so far.

"We ask passengers to remain in the ship for at most 14 days," Kato said. "We would like to take thorough measures."

The 10 people who have tested positive range in age from their 50s to 80s, and include three Japanese. They have been brought ashore and hospitalized at institutions designated for infectious diseases.

They have shown symptoms such as fever and some breathing difficulty, with one suffering from a fever of 39 C.

The Diamond Princess cruise ship left Yokohama on Jan. 20, arriving at Hong Kong on Jan. 25 via Kagoshima, southern Japan. The ship returned to Yokohama on Feb. 3 after passing Vietnam, Taiwan, Okinawa and other ports.

The first passenger who landed in Hong Kong and tested positive is an 80-year-old man who got on board in Yokohama. The Hong Kong authorities sounded the alert after confirming his condition.

There are 2,666 passengers and 1,045 crew in the ship, coming from 56 countries and regions including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Death toll from China is 570. The death rate per day is increasing.

BEIJING — The number of confirmed fatalities from China's coronavirus outbreak rose to at least 560, after authorities in hardest-hit Hubei province reported 70 new deaths on Thursday.

In its daily update, the health commission in Hubei also confirmed another 2,987 new cases.

That puts the national total at more than 27,300, based on numbers previously issued by the central government.

The epidemic, which has spiraled into a global health emergency, is believed to have emerged in December from a market that sold wild game in Hubei's capital Wuhan.

Hu Lishan, an official in Wuhan, warned Wednesday that despite building a hospital from scratch and converting public buildings to accommodate thousands of extra patients, there was still a "severe" lack of beds in the region.

There was also a shortage of "equipment and materials," he told reporters, adding that officials were looking to convert other hotels and schools in the city into treatment centers.

Authorities in several other cities in China have placed restrictions on the number of people allowed to leave their homes.

Global concerns have also risen about the virus, with cases confirmed in more than 20 countries.

Toll in China at 636. Toyota postpones the restarting of operations at plants in China.

NAGOYA (Kyodo) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it will further delay the restart of operations at four auto plants in China in response to the spread of a deadly coronavirus originating in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

The closures are expected to extend to sometime after Feb. 17. The decision reflects local logistics and parts procurement conditions, a Toyota spokeswoman said.

The Japanese auto giant had initially planned to restart the plants in early February after the Lunar New Year holiday, but decided in late January to continue its suspension of operations until at least next Monday following the virus outbreak.

Toyota produced about 1.4 million vehicles in 2019 for the Chinese market at the four factories located in Tianjin, Chengdu, Changchun and Guangzhou, up 6.6 percent from the previous year. Its sales in the country reached 1.62 million units, surpassing the figure for Japan for the first time.

The carmaker said it will make preparations next week to resume work at the plants. "We will make appropriate decisions (on reopening) after consulting with local joint venture partners," the spokeswoman said.

The number of people infected with the coronavirus in China has topped 31,000, with 636 confirmed deaths, the Chinese government said Friday.

A Wuhan doctor, Li Wenliang (34), described as the whistle blower about the coronavirus died from the virus. Social media in China goes its rounds, some censorship appears to be getting used by the central government.

HONG KONG -- The death of a Wuhan doctor, who had been detained for "spreading false information" after alerting colleagues about the coronavirus in the early days of the outbreak, has triggered an outpouring of grief and anger on Chinese social media. The incident is prompting many in China to question Beijing's crackdown on free speech and the perceived mishandling of the public health crisis, which has claimed more than 600 lives so far.

Some internet users have described it as "the largest moral outcry in China since 1989," the year of the Tiananmen Square demonstrations.

Li Wenliang, a 34-year-old ophthalmologist at the Wuhan Central Hospital, died early Friday from the coronavirus infection. He is being hailed as a whistleblower and a hero on social media for "speaking the truth" as netizens in China accuse authorities of incompetence in their attempt to contain the outbreak that saw more than 31,000 confirmed cases globally, most of them in China.

"Our corrupted country does not deserve him," one user wrote on Weibo, a popular microblogging site in China.

Amid public anger, China's National Supervisory Commission -- the country's highest anti-corruption agency -- said on Friday it will send an investigation team to Hubei Province, where Wuhan is located, to conduct a "thorough investigation on issues regarding Dr. Li Wenliang."

"The investigation is perhaps motivated by the central government's concerns over the public's reactions to Li's unfortunate death," said Zhang Baohui, a political-science professor at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. "It could be a gesture to placate the public."

Li was among the eight doctors summoned to the local police in late December over the messages they had shared with an online chat group, where they warned other medical school classmates of a SARS-like illness at a Wuhan hospital.

A screenshot of his message went viral, and police called him in soon thereafter. Li shared on his Weibo page a police-written statement that he was made to sign admitting to "severely disrupting social order" and promising to halt his "unlawful activities."

As of 5 p.m. Friday Beijing time, the hashtag "Li Wenliang passed away" had drawn 460 million views on Weibo, where messages to mourn his death have flooded the news feed. The Wuhan government and China's National Health Commission have each issued statements to express "deep condolences" over Li's death.

As the overnight internet outrage boiled over to concerns on freedom of speech and authorities' inability to curb the virus from spreading, censorship has taken place over some sensitive discussions. The hashtags "I want free speech" and "Wuhan government owes Dr. Li an apology" had attracted millions of views before being removed by authorities on Friday morning.

Beijing's decision not to cover up Li's death is a sensible one, according to Charlie Smith, a Chinese censorship expert and president of GreatFire, a website that tracks China's online censorship system. "Every Chinese has been in some way affected by the coronavirus. Chinese are upset, frustrated and emotional, and need to express these emotions," he said.

"The authorities are still censoring some posts related to Li Wenliang's death, but they risk creating more anger if they impose blanket censorship on this discussion," Smith said.

Another mistake in controlling the public narrative, following the missteps in dealing with the coronavirus, would risk "undermining [the Communist Party] regime legitimacy, which is based on the notion that the party knows best," said John P. Burns, a professor specializing in Chinese politics at the University of Hong Kong. "Clearly it doesn't, and everyone can see it. As the adage goes, the emperor has no clothes."

In a video shown widely online -- by Beijing-based Sohu; Chaoyang, Liaoning Province-based Pear Video, a Chinese streaming platform; and Phoenix Television -- a woman believed to be Li's mother expressed gratitude for the love shared by the public over her son's death.

"He was not the kind of person who would tell lies, and he was devoted to his duty," said the woman, whose face was not seen in the video.

Li had revealed that both of his parents were diagnosed positive for the new coronavirus in an interview with Caixin in late January.

"Both his father and I recovered, but my child did not make it," the woman in the video said. Li's wife is now pregnant with their second child, and none of Li's close family members were allowed to see him before his death, according to the video.

Wu Qiang, a Beijing-based China watcher and former political science professor at Tsinghua University, believes the investigation would just be a political show.

"They will punish some people, but the real purpose is to divert people's focus from the nation's lack of freedom of speech and other systematic issues that are embedded in the political establishments of [President Xi Jinping's] regime," he said, adding that Beijing fears that Li's death could become a symbol that will brew uprising for civil rights in China.

In a rare critical tone, Chinese state-run Global Times on Friday published a commentary paying tribute to Li, writing that China should "rethink why the doctor's alert was not being appreciated in the beginning," and why "the whistleblower got punished instead."

Still, China watchers are not overly optimistic that Li's death will bring about relaxation in Beijing's control over free speech.

"Even though major media institutions like the Global Times and Caixin magazine have covered Dr. Li's case from critical perspectives, this does not necessarily mean there will be a major and lasting change in the relationship between media and state," said Zhang of Lingnan University. "We need time to have a more reliable conclusion."

Burns at HKU believes that Beijing will continue to step up censorship "to ensure the party's survival in power."

"I expect that the CCP will not learn from this the value of authentic voices of civil society in governing China," Burns said.

Yet, some are more hopeful.

"It could be a turning point for freedom of speech in China because there are so many other questions [stemming from the crisis] that need answering," said Smith of GreatFire. "Once daily life in China returns to normal, we could see a surge of interest in other sensitive issues."

"Li made people realize that without freedom, there is no safety," said Wu, noting that his death could serve as a wake-up call for the tens of millions of Chinese who were willing to sacrifice some of their civil rights in exchange of economic and personal security in China. "The story of an ordinary doctor has challenged the fundamentals of China's authoritarian system."

As many in China give their eulogies for Li on the internet, a quote by the doctor has also gone viral: "There should not be just one voice in a healthy society," Li told Caixin in an interview in late January, after he was diagnosed with the disease.

Toll now at 717 from mainland China. The earlier 2 (Philippines and HK) make the total 719. In that cruise ship off from Yokohama, 61 have been found infected, up from the earlier report 10 being infected.

Planes carrying about 300 Americans from the Chinese city at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak arrived at military bases in California and Texas on Friday. Some of the Americans were expected to go on from Texas to Nebraska.

Passengers will be under a 14-day quarantine to protect against the spread of the virus. "Our top priority is keeping the risk to the American public low, and we're working on all fronts to do that," Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told reporters.

All but two of the 719 confirmed deaths have been in mainland China, with one person succumbing in the Philippines and another in Hong Kong. More than 33,000 people have been infected with the virus worldwide, the vast majority of them in China. As of Friday morning, there were 12 confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. and nine Americans among 61 people sickened with it who have been taken off a quarantined cruise ship in Japan.

Amid a growing backlash from the Chinese public, the country's ruling Communist Party has promised an investigation into the apparent silencing of at least one doctor who tried to warn colleagues that a virus was spreading in the city of Wuhan two months ago, before the new disease was even identified. That doctor has died after becoming infected with the virus himself.

But as Beijing vows to "fully investigate relevant issues raised by the public" and in spite of an admission earlier this week that there had been "shortcomings and deficiencies" in its initial response, China continues to bristle at the measures taken by other countries to stop the virus spreading.

New Details on Asymptomatic Coronavirus Transmission

NEJM authors detail patient's day-to-day symptoms or lack thereof

by Ian Ingram, Deputy Managing Editor, MedPage

Today

February 07, 2020

New details have emerged surrounding the contested report of asymptomatic transmission of the novel coronavirus in Germany.

Responding to criticism that they had omitted key facts about the index patient -- a Shanghai resident who had traveled to Germany for business -- researchers spoke with the woman in question and relayed a timeline of how her illness developed, including the days before it became clear she was ill.

In a supplementary appendix to their letter in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Camilla Rothe, MD, of University Hospital LMU Munich, and colleagues reported that the Shanghai woman landed in Munich on the morning of Sunday Jan. 19, feeling well but having noticed a passenger some rows behind her coughing on the flight.

Throughout the next day she had various meetings and felt no symptoms of illness, but that night awoke around midnight feeling "a little bit warm, but not in a febrile way," Rothe and colleagues said the woman told them. She took an over-the-counter Chinese drug containing acetaminophen as a preventive measure due to an intense schedule of meetings the following day.

These details, that she had felt warm and taken fever-reducing medication while in Germany, were called out in Tuesday's Science report questioning whether she was truly asymptomatic during her time there. This, however, turned out to be the one time during her stay in Germany that she reported feeling warm or taking any sort of medication, according to Rothe's group.

The NEJM otherwise made no changes in the group's published report, the title of which described the Shanghai woman as an "asymptomatic contact."

On Tuesday Jan. 21, the woman recalled feeling tired around 3 p.m. and assumed this was due to the fact that it would have been her bedtime in China. She also reported minor muscle and bone pain in her chest when touching certain areas.

The patient described feeling cold on the morning of her last day in Germany, Wednesday Jan. 22, while wearing light business attire, but she resolved this by putting on a shawl. She had meetings all day and flew home that night, arriving Thursday afternoon in Shanghai, tired but otherwise feeling fine.

"I can certainly see how they would want to characterize this as a transmission in an asymptomatic phase," Fred N. Pelzman, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates in New York City, told MedPage Today. "None of what she did or felt seemed like a viral prodrome."

It was back in China on the evening of Jan. 23 that the woman started feeling ill. "This is the first moment I recognized getting sick," she told the researchers, and later reported a temperature of 100.4°F and localized chest pain. On Saturday Jan. 25, she went to a doctor and was hospitalized.

As of yesterday, total count of cases in Germany is 14 - eight from the company she visited, the wives of two, and two kids of one (plus another contact which went on vacation during the incubation period and was quarantined in the Canary Islands, not included in the national tally). The remaining two are from the about 120 Germans and dependents airlifted out of Wuhan. All are reportedly exhibiting at most some cold symptoms, and diarrhoea in a few cases.

Another globaltimes article saying that the GDP growth rate in the current quarter will drop because of the virus but it should not drop below 5% and that the whole year should return to 6%.

Although the novel coronavirus will cause a drop in China's first quarter economic growth, the impact can be controlled, with the GDP growth rate expected to stay above 5 percent in the first quarter of 2020. The country's economic growth rate is likely to remain robust at 6 percent for the year.

The coronavirus outbreak during the Chinese New Year holiday season meant the holiday was prolonged. The virus' impact is mainly concentrated in a few areas, including tourism, transportation, education and aviation.

Some may worry that domestic consumption will be undermined, but I believe this will not be the case. Consumers continue to purchase agricultural products including meat and prices are stable.

The domestic e-commerce and delivery service industry will suffer limited impact. Cross-border e-commerce may be dealt a blow with reduced numbers of orders.

In this unprecedented situation, it is important to maintain strong exports and a robust manufacturing industry. Entrepreneurs and employees are confident that they can map out their own paths. This confidence stems from China's governance capabilities. It also comes from the belief in China's institutional advantages. Confidence will unite the Chinese people.

In the second half of 2020, China's epidemic-hit economy is expected to rebound, with a robust recovery in the third and fourth quarters.

After quelling the coronavirus, China should continue to implement schemes such as the Belt and Road Initiative, free trade zones and free trade ports. Continuing these initiatives is vital for shareholder confidence, investor expectations for Chinese economic stability and China's business environment. China should also ensure investment projects which involve firms like Tesla and ExxonMobil. Those projects will build China's global image and boost our own confidence.

China should continue to deepen reform. The epidemic has revealed deficiencies in contingency measures to counter emergencies in some areas. However, China gave full play to its governance capabilities and institutional advantages when the entire country was mobilized. This is something that no other country could ever achieve. Down the road, the country's institutional potential can be fully released. The Chinese economy's momentum can surely make a comeback in the second half of 2020.

Well, I7m just posting the article as a record, not as a statment of belief that the GDP growth will remain high like the article's argument. By keeping it in record, then it can be compared to the actual picture in February 2021.

There have been examples of Chinese provinces readjusting their GDPs to something lower than what was previously reported. Future GDP growth prediction is very sketchy regardless that national banks of various countries and the IMF give GDP growth rate estimates for the year at the time. But there are other sources of indications of GDP levels such as the trade numbers reported by various countries and other organizations like, again IMF, or CIA worldfact book. All those other countries and organizations can't also be making fake data about trade volume with China. China has becoming the largest trade partner for basically all other countries except the Europeans within the EU. Those trade numbers indicate an enormous amount of importing and exporting activity by China. The volume of trade has decreased a little recently but that is only relative to the last few years. Another indication is the Chinese stocks. They dropped as well but nothing unprecedented. Other indications include the strength of the Yuan, it has strengthened again since the last trade war exchanges with Trump last year. Still a little weak though. But despite the relatively weaker Yuan, its share as a global currency reserve is still increasing. Still less than the pound but it has inched above the Canadian dollar and Australian dollar. Another indication would be if China's reserves drop or not. One last indication would be military spending. If for example, naval growth slows down, then its probably a factor to slowing GDP growth. But there's been reports about the China Ghost cities and over capacity meaning fake GDP growth in the past 10 years and yet, here we are, no China economy collapse. A counter to the virus is that the trade war has eased up with the signing of phase one and some amount of tariffs on China was lifted by the US.

We'll see how all those factors go in the following months...

Coronavirus: Final rescue flight from Wuhan lands in UK

More than 200 people evacuated from the coronavirus-hit city of Wuhan have landed at RAF Brize Norton.

Two Britons were refused permission to board the flight, carrying government staff, military medics, UK citizens and foreign nationals, officials said.

Evacuees will be taken from Oxfordshire to a Milton Keynes conference centre for 14 days of quarantine.

There have been more than 37,000 cases of the virus globally, mostly in China, with three confirmed cases in the UK.

The death toll for coronavirus has now overtaken that of the Sars epidemic in 2003, according to health officials in China, reaching 811. In 2003, 774 people were killed by Sars.

The flight, which landed shortly before 07:30 GMT on Sunday, is the second and last flight chartered by the Foreign Office out of Wuhan, the city where the new coronavirus emerged.

The UK's ambassador to Beijing, Dame Barbara Woodward, told the BBC that two British people who wanted to join the flight were denied boarding after failing temperature checks in China.

"We are in touch with them and will try and support them to get them onto another country's flights as soon as possible," she said.

More than 100 UK nationals and family members have already been evacuated to Britain on flights chartered by the UK and other countries. They are being held in quarantine at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral.

The latest returnees will be housed at Kents Hill Park conference centre and hotel, where they will remain in isolation for two weeks - the incubation period of the virus - to ensure they are not infected.

[...]

In the UK, the Department of Health and Social Care said that 686 people in the UK have been tested for coronavirus as of Saturday afternoon, with three cases confirmed.

The virus causes severe short-term infection of the airways, and symptoms usually start with a fever, followed by a dry cough. Most people are likely to fully recover - just as they would from the flu.

Two of the UK coronavirus cases - both Chinese nationals - are being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

After the third case was confirmed, it emerged that the British man had been exposed to the virus in Singapore and stopped at a ski resort in France before returning home.

There, five more Britons - four adults and a nine-year-old boy - staying at the same chalet in the Alps tested positive for the virus.

In Majorca, Spanish authorities said four members of a British family have also been taken into hospital after coming into contact with a coronavirus carrier in France. They are being tested for the virus at the University Hospital of Son Espases in Palma.

A student at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy in Brighton is self-isolating for 14 days following advice from Public Health England.

Also about 20 Germans on that British flight who will be forwarded by the Luftwaffe to Berlin and quarantined in a local hospital.

Here's some cheery reading.

https://spectator.us/china-hiding-bad-coronavirus/

tl;dr it's way worse than the Chinese government is letting on and they're covering the whole thing up to save face.

I don't think so, the comparison with flu is bogus, because the lethality seems simillar (around 2% in China, less than 1% ROW), but the Coronovirus seems more contagious, including that 10 day period without symptoms, so wihout quarantine, you can see all of China (and everyone else...) infected and the death toll could run into millions, like the 1918 pandemic flu.

Another similarly damning article.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As many experts question the veracity of China's statistics for the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, Tencent over the weekend appeared to inadvertently release what is potentially the actual number of infections and deaths — which are far higher than official figures, but eerily in line with predictions from a respected scientific journal.

As early as Jan. 26, netizens were reporting that Tencent, on its webpage titled "Epidemic Situation Tracker," briefly showed data on the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in China that was much higher than official estimates, before suddenly switching to lower numbers. Hiroki Lo, a 38-year-old Taiwanese beverage store owner, that day reported that Tencent and NetEase were both posting "unmodified statistics," before switching to official numbers in short order.

Lo told Taiwan News than on Jan. 26 he checked the numbers on both Tencent and NetEase and found them "really scary." He said he did not know whether the numbers were real or not, but did not have much time to think about it as he had a busy day of work ahead at his store.

Lo said he did not check the numbers again until he went home that evening, when he was shocked to see they had dropped dramatically and "something was wrong." He said he noticed individuals on a Hong Kong Facebook group also observed the same bizarre occurrence that day.

On late Saturday evening (Feb. 1), the Tencent webpage showed confirmed cases of the Wuhan virus in China as standing at 154,023, 10 times the official figure at the time. It listed the number of suspected cases as 79,808, four times the official figure.

The number of cured cases was only 269, well below the official number that day of 300. Most ominously, the death toll listed was 24,589, vastly higher than the 300 officially listed that day.

Moments later, Tencent updated the numbers to reflect the government's "official" numbers that day. Netizens noticed that Tencent has on at least three occasions posted extremely high numbers, only to quickly lower them to government-approved statistics.

Netizens also noticed that each time the screen with the large numbers appears, a comparison with the previous day's data appears above, which demonstrates a "reasonable" incremental increase, much like the official numbers. This has led some netizens to speculate that Tencent has two sets of data, the real data and "processed" data.

Some are speculating that a coding problem could be causing the real "internal" data to accidentally appear. Others believe that someone behind the scenes is trying to leak the real numbers.

However, the "internal" data held by Beijing may not reflect the true extent of the epidemic. According to multiple sources in Wuhan, many coronavirus patients are unable to receive treatment and die outside of hospitals.

A severe shortage of test kits also leads to a lower number of diagnosed cases of infection and death. In addition, there have been many reports of doctors being ordered to list other forms of death instead of coronavirus to keep the death toll artificially low.

Although some are chalking up the images to users tampering with their browsers, the 154,023 infections on Feb. 1 are remarkably close to the estimate predicted on that date by a scientific modeling study carried out by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and published on The Lancet website. The study estimates the number of cases is much more given the 2.68 spread rate per case, the doubling of total infections every 6.4 days, and known travel patterns in China and worldwide.

The study stated that by Jan. 25, there were likely already 75,815 people infected with the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan. This number for January far exceeds the number of 28,000 given by the government on Feb. 6.

As the report estimated over 75,000 cases on Jan. 25, and the Feb. 1 post was seven days later, the number of cases in Wuhan alone, according to the model, should have reached 150,000, uncannily close to the 154,023 listed for all of China on the Tencent page. With nearly 12 days having passed since the report was released, the model predicts the number of infections in Wuhan could now stand at 300,000.

Another strange phenomenon that netizens have noticed is the mortality rate, as the government death tolls are routinely maintaining an exact percentile for days on end. Many noticed that in the early days of reporting, the government put the death rate at 3.1 percent.

Jan. 22: 17 deaths / 542 infections = 3.1 percent

Jan. 23: 26 deaths / 830 infections = 3.1 percent

Jan. 24: 41 deaths / 1,287 infections = 3.1 percent

By late January, the government apparently decided to set the new official mortality rate at 2.1 percent. As can be seen in the image below, the mortality rate was kept at a precise 2.1 percent, regardless of the numbers from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3:

The mortality rates for the numbers briefly shown on Tencent are much higher. The death rate for Jan. 26 was 2,577 deaths out of 15,701 infections, or 16 percent.

The death rate for the Feb. 1 post was 24,589 deaths out of 154,023 infections, which also comes out to 16 percent. The death rates briefly shown are clearly vastly higher than the official percentages and substantially higher than SARS at 9.6 percent, but lower than MERS at 34.5 percent.

Update: 02/07 6:00 p.m.

In response to this report, Tencent issued the following statement:

"The Tencent News “Epidemic Situation Tracker” reports real-time data from China' s National Health Commission and various Municipal Health Commissions across China.

It is one of several Tencent initiatives, including "Tencent Health" and "Rumour Filter", that keep users informed and up to date on new developments relating to the novel Coronavirus epidemic and check on hearsay versus fact shared by over 170 authoritative information sources across China.

Unfortunately, several social media sources have circulated doctored images of our “Epidemic Situation Tracker” featuring false information which we never published.

Tencent uses technology for good and is disappointed with this type of unscrupulous behavior. Tencent does not condone the dissemination of inaccurate information and fake news especially during this sensitive period.

We reserve all legal rights and remedies in this matter and urge those misusing our services to immediately cease the manufacture and proliferation of false information."

However, a Taiwanese netizen, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed to Taiwan News on Feb. 7 that he too had witnessed the much higher numbers on the Tencent page at 3:30 a.m. Taipei time on Jan. 26. He said that when he checked the webpage again the next day, he noticed the figures had been substantially lowered.

There are several videos on Twitter apparently showing Chinese police in surgical masks dragging people kicking and screaming out of their homes and piling them into vans to be taken away. If real, that's not usually something you see from an outbreak that's under control.

Here's one, anyone know what's being said or what's written on the uniforms or vehicles?

Jeff, its the Public Security Bureau, or in short, the police.

Here are other police cars. Pretty much same markings and ensign. Can't help with speech though.

I've watched some footage of PRC police dragging people into a car or out and into a building on Japan's late night news. Although that one is another goes in addition to what I saw on the news.
