rmgill Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 Just to keep things in perspective, you're still extremely unlikely to die in a terrorist attack in the UK. For comparison, we lose about 430 people a day in the UK to heart disease. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/many-people-killed-terrorist-attacks-uk/Just to keep things in perspective you're even less likely to die in a Russian chemical weapons attack in the UK.
Markus Becker Posted August 24, 2018 Posted August 24, 2018 http://www.israelhayom.com/2018/08/24/study-finds-surprising-reason-behind-most-terror-attacks/ See, being crazy and being a terrorist does go together.
Chris Werb Posted August 31, 2018 Posted August 31, 2018 Especially as the Russians haven't conducted any such attacks (according to them)

DB Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 I'm not sure why that's considered surprising. It's been a fairly constant factor in lone wolf attacks. Doesn't mean that the "disturbed" person wasn't influenced by the "professionals", however indirectly.
Roman Alymov Posted September 3, 2018 Author Posted September 3, 2018 Back in mid-1990th, one of our informal battlefield archeology group members was insane in medical sense of the word (meaning: having papers proving he is insane). No he was not biting door handles etc – quite nice guy in everyday life, nobody was afraid to share the tent with him in the middle of nowhere, and it was the days before mobile phones and everybody owning offroad vehicles, we were on our own as soon as stepping out from paved road into the forest. But ideas of this guy about life and future were sort of “survivor” ones -“everything will change, the last will become the first ones, we have to get ready, collect weapons” etc. Russia was crazy place by this time so another young guy with crazy ideas was not something worrying people around. And he was in fact collecting weapons and explosives found (in his flat in multi-floor residential block he was living with his mother), so everybody understand it will not end in good way and gradually moved away from communicating with him. He was finally arrested, with dozens of firearms and kilograms of explosives confiscated, but he was not convicted as he was officially insane. Why I am telling this here? This guy was ethnic Tatar from modestly religious Islamic family. But as it was before ideas of Islamic extremism were imported into Russia, he was in no way contaminated with them, and his crazy ideas were not linked to Islam in any way. In our days, young man like him is easy pray for extremist online recruitment or self-radicalization.
Panzermann Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 (edited) yes, they look for these damaged personalites, the confused, the lost and then give them a "purpose". in other news and it seems to have slipped by on this here great site apart from NickM mentioning it in the FFZ. There was a gunmen attack on a military parade of the Revolutionary Guards in Ahvaz in Iran on Saturday: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/09/thousands-iranians-attend-funeral-ahvaz-attack-victims-180924142006644.html News/Middle East Thousands of Iranians attend funeral for Ahvaz attack victims At least 29 people were killed and some 70 others wounded in Saturday's attack on a military parade. 4 hours ago Thousands of people gathered in Iran's southwestern city of Ahvaz at a mass funeral for the victims of an attack on a military parade that killed 25 people. Mourners flooded the streets of Ahvaz, the capital of oil-rich Khuzestan province, on Monday, waving Iranian flags and holding photographs of the victims aloft. Among those being mourned was a disabled war veteran and a four-year-old boy, as well as at least 12 members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard. READ MORE Iran blames US and Gulf allies for Ahvaz parade attack Gunmen dressed in military uniform opened fire on marching soldiers, bystanders and government officials, who had gathered to watch the parade on Saturday. Almost half of those killed were from Ahvaz, while the others came from elsewhere in Khuzestan. "Just look at the crowd," said Ahvaz resident Ghaseem Farhani. "With no fear, people are gathered here to see their soldiers and martyrs off to heaven." Mourners reportedly shouted "death to America" and "death to Israel". As relatives lay atop their loved ones' flag-draped coffins near Ahvaz's Sarallah Mosque, Iran's Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavia said many suspects were identified and "a majority of them were detained". "We will punish the terrorists, one by one," he said. Iranian officials have blamed the attack, which took place at a military parade to mark the anniversary of the start of the Iran's 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq, on an Arab separatist group and its alleged international backers. The al-Ahvaziya armed group claimed responsibility for the attack. It accused Iran's Persian-dominated government of discriminating against the country's ethnic Arab minority. President Hassan Rouhani vowed to deliver a "crushing response", while Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei linked the attack with the US and its "allies in the region". READ MORE Iran: Who was responsible for the deadly attack in Ahvaz? The country's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said "regional terror sponsors" were responsible for the attack, adding he held "their US masters accountable". General Hossein Salami, acting commander of the Revolutionary Guard, vowed revenge on the perpetrators and what he called the "triangle" - or Saudi Arabia, Israel and the US - saying operatives would be harshly punished. "You are responsible for these actions; you will face the repercussions. We warn all of those behind the story, we will take revenge," he said. Khuzestan province is home to the small minority of Ahvazi Arabs, who are divided over whether they want independence or devolution of power within a democratic, federal Iran. The province has also been the site of recent protests over a nationwide drought and the economy. Iran's foreign ministry has also summoned Western diplomats and an envoy from the UAE, accusing them of allegedly providing havens for the Arab separatists. READ MORE Iran's Revolutionary Guard vows to avenge Ahvaz attack The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (also known as ISIS or ISIL) also claimed to be behind the shooting, providing images of the attackers, which did not resemble those published by Iranian media in the aftermath of the attack. (...) According to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA), an armed group called al-Ahvaziya claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL, also known as ISIS) also said it was behind the assault. Little is known about the al-Ahvaziya group, but Revolutionary Guards spokesman Ramezan Sharif told ISNA it is "funded by Saudi Arabia". In a statement to the Iran International news site, a spokesman was quoted as saying the attack on Saturday "was in response to the repression of Ahvazi Arabs". Markus Becker Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Cologne yesterday. A 55 year old illegal from "Syria" with a long criminal record burns the legs of a teenage girl with a Molotov cocktail before taking another female hostage. He pledged loyalty to the Islamic State. https://www.focus.de/politik/deutschland/hatte-frau-in-seiner-gewalt-koelner-geiselnehmer-ist-sympathisant-der-terrormiliz-is_id_9762193.html
BansheeOne Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Well, if the residence permit limited to 2021 which was found at the scene is actually his - which authorities haven't yet confirmed - he is obviously no illegal.* I think it likely is; I'm reminded of the Berlin Christmas market attacker also leaving his permit in the truck he used, both looking a lot like they wanted to make sure it was clear asylum seekers did it. 55 is a little on the old end for jihadis, though. I find it interesting that police said at yesterday's press conference that for all of that person's record for theft, fraud, threatening and trespassing etc. he wasn't known as an islamist, but in fact pointed out another guy to them as such once. Curious to hear the whole story. * I think I heard from the press conference it was just a receipt of toleration, which would mean he would still be obliged to leave the country though it's not being enforced; but also that it was an Aufenthaltstitel, which a Duldung is not. It may be that as usual he was tolerated for more than 18 months and thus got a proper three-year permit. Ah, the fine points of German law and the lack of will to enforce the simpler ones.
BansheeOne Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Match between perpetrator and the ID found on the scene now confirmed. Prior police record with 13 counts of drugs, theft, fraud, threats and trespassing since 2016. Lived in a refugee shelter, reportedly unable to work for psychological reasons. According to the shelter adminstrator he claimed to have been imprisoned and tortured in Syria as a regime critic, and to undergo treatment for the effects in Cologne. Police can't confirm this story. A son and brother of his are also living in Germany while his wife is still in Syria, having unsuccessfully filed to join him twice. His dwellings have been searched and more gasoline was found. Also Islamic inscriptions on the walls, but no reference to the IS. There is an investigation for possible accomplices, though no evidence for such has been found so far. The guy himself is no longer critical, but remains comatose in intensive care. The girl who suffered severe burns in the attack is to undergo surgery today; the lightly injured hostage has been discharged from hospital by now.
BansheeOne Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Perpetrator was accepted as a refugee, so had a regular residence permit, not a toleration. He is being charged with hostage-taking and two counts of attempted murder for burning the 14-year-old and pouring gasoline on the hostage in the pharmacy, which is when police intervened. He remains currently incapable of interrogation. Federal prosecutors have taken over investigations as a possible terror case since pouring gasoline all over the floor of the McDonalds and setting it on fire was clearly intended to cause as many casualties as possible. Though it can't be ruled out he was merely unhinged, whether due to traumatic experience in Syria, his wife not being allowed to join him, or any other combination of causes. I haven't heard the IS has claimed him so far, which would be negligent of them; but maybe I just haven't looked hard enough.
Simon Tan Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Our Syrians are much better off. They all work and generally have normal lives. We dont treat them as refugees but as visitors. We also tolerate schwarzarbeiter.
Markus Becker Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 The most recent terrorist in Germany wasn't a terrorist. The guy who tried to torch a McDonald's, seriously injured a girl and took a woman hostage was just 'mentally disturbed'. So say the infallible authorities of Germany who are 100% trustworthy.
BansheeOne Posted November 3, 2018 Posted November 3, 2018 This is a weird one. Tunis attack: Suicide bomber was jobless graduate 30 October 2018 Authorities in Tunisia have named the attacker behind Monday's suicide bombing in the capital, Tunis, which injured nine people. Mouna Guebla, 30, was an unemployed graduate from the eastern region of Mahdia, the prosecutor's office said. Her father doubted that his daughter had acted willingly to carry out the attack. Guebla appeared to have used a homemade bomb rather than an explosive belt, police sources told AFP news agency. After studying English, Guebla had been jobless for three years, helping to look after sheep to assist her family. A third of Tunisian graduates are unemployed. "I know she did not intend to do things like that," her father, Mouhamed Guebla, was quoted as saying by AFP news agency. The attack was an "isolated act", Interior Minister Hichem Fourati said, adding that Guebla had not been on a watch list of potential extremists and not been "known for her religious background or affiliation". No group has said it was behind the attack but local media report that Guebla might have been radicalised on the internet. Normalcy returned to Tunis on Tuesday but there was a reinforced police presence around the blast site. Authorities say nobody was seriously injured in the attack. Egypt attack: Gunmen target bus with Coptic Christians 2 November 2018 At least seven people have been killed in Egypt by gunmen who opened fire on a bus carrying a group of Coptic Christians, officials say. A number of people were also injured in the attack in the Minya region, south of the capital Cairo. The bus was heading towards a local monastery, a senior Coptic cleric says. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamist militants have targeted Egypt's Coptic Christian minority repeatedly in recent years. Egypt's Copts have in the past accused the authorities of making only token gestures to protect them from such attacks. Egypt is a Muslim-majority country and its Christian minority - mostly members of the Coptic Orthodox Church - make up around 10% of the population. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-46075969
Adam Peter Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Every planner of the terror act on 13.11.2015 in Paris is killed, according to Matthieu Suc, journalist of the web portal Mediapart. His book, Les espions de la terreur has been published on this week. According to the book, the terrorist group worked like a CIA group. They flooded the western security services with information in the poorer countries, knowing that they don't have money to work it out what is important. Most of the strikes were executed by US forces, sometimes with French input. France did not disclosed the strikes because of possible negative consequences of the targeted strike=killing, attacking a place/group=wartime activity views, and the difficulties of getting confirmation of the killing. He thinks coordinated attack like this was is not possible due to the development of security services, but warns that some more ISIS members are among the migrants arrived in 2016 somewhere in Europe (but they can not get weapons), and the returning Europe-born muslim radicals.
