Murph Posted September 19, 2024 Author Posted September 19, 2024 Aaaaannnnd this: Heat Index just below 100F today at 60+% humidty.
Tim Sielbeck Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 The first half of September, in Dallas, was wet and cool. Highs in the low eighties mostly. Now it’s in the mid to upper nineties which is normal for North Texas.
Tim Sielbeck Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Haven't watched football in years. I lost interest when coverage became more about contracts rather than success on the field.
Murph Posted September 23, 2024 Author Posted September 23, 2024 too many ads, all of which piss me off. Plus the self entitled narcissism of the players. Give me the old teams with greats like Staubach, Newhouse, Campbell, etc.
Ivanhoe Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 With the longer seasons, in some ways the playoffs are a reflection of the team doctors' talents as much as the players.

If we're talking about the PhDs in the sports sciences as well as wellness and nutrition, then yeah, I'd agree. That's also the appeal to some folks. As much as TN loves to bemoan the fall of science those fields have been progressing by leaps and bounds in the last two decades and in today's podcast environment it's easy for anyone to listen to many of these experts and hear what they do with these top athletes. If there's a downside to all of this we're advancing human performance but may be running into a limit of what the body can take, given the NFL is a contact sport. What used to be extraordinary in the league is now the norm. Some folks point to offensive and defensive lineman in attempts to make jokes and fail to realize how agile and ridiculously strong those players are.
Ivanhoe Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 To hell with mosquitoes, its the fire ants which have secret underground conclaves wherein they plan on giving me more ankle scars.
Tim Sielbeck Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 I use a spray bottle with water and a few drops of Dawn for spot killing. Works on all insects that I've tried it on. If you put a hose and some Dawn into a nest I'm sure most of them will die without getting to you. The guy from Demolition Ranch used Flex Seal on a mound and killed most all of them after a couple of days (> 99% from what I could see in the video).
Rick Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 For the really big ants, watch the 1954 classic "Them" on ideas on how to get rid of them.

Specific threads aren't coming to mind at the moment... but considering the lens that most FFZ posters view the world I recall quite a few posts over the years lamenting the decline of science in general. In usual fashion these folks are painting with a wide brush while latching onto social justice issues which occasionally bleed into academia.

A majority of the few posters that spam the FFZ these days view everything in the world as being corrupted by DEI, wokeness, Leftist agendas, men in dark rooms smoking cigars, etc. Science is treated no differently. They'll dwell on isolated instances of poor science being conducted pushed as proof that the entire field is corrupt while ignoring the fact there are such a ridiculous number of papers released every year in basically every field. Go listen to folks like Dr Huberman, Dr Patrick, Dr Attia and in the area of health/wellness there is still a massive amount of amazing research being done every year which is continually pushing our understanding of the human body and health in general. Focusing on isolated cases of poor science pushed through a bad journal doesn't change that. Even fields like psychiatry and psychology (fields I know you've criticized in the past) have evolved substantially in the last two decades plus since I took my first college psych class. That's not to say there aren't issues (such as the 'publish or die' mentality at modern US universities which is likely a big reason we get these examples of poor work)... but I've never seen anything solid to cast aspersions across entire fields of research like I've seen some do here.

Maybe they identify as women? Or as Cats? What I think you' fail to grasp is the extent of the DEI push via blackrock. You fail to follow anything but the likes of MSNBC and NPR so you just don't see it. You're woefully uninformed on the subject. You decry alternate sources like Tim Pool and just don't get the information in your usual feeds. What you do, you just discount. Here's one to note. I'll bet you'll ignore this too. 19 minutes ago, Skywalkre said: Science is treated no differently. Which scientists are on the allowed to be listened to list? Judith Curry is clealry off of yours. 19 minutes ago, Skywalkre said: Go listen to folks like Dr Huberman, Dr Patrick, Dr Attia and in the area of health/wellness there is still a massive amount of amazing research being done every year which is continually pushing our understanding of the human body and health in general. We currently have folks in the national policy realm arguing the modern equivalent of Cigarettes are GOOD for you where it comes to dyes and other things going into our food. 19 minutes ago, Skywalkre said: Even fields like psychiatry and psychology (fields I know you've criticized in the past) have evolved substantially in the last two decades plus since I took my first college psych class. Explain the major shift in Dysphoria in the DSM5. Does anorexia now demand surgical intervention?
Mr King Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Psychiatry and psychology have not "evolved", they have been ideologically and politically captured.
