When we have large brush or pine forest fires in the south west side of the state (actually good practice to burn out the undergrowth and the pine forests are mostly immune to it) we get great sunsets AND a really nice smell on the air. The many miles of distance means the wood smoke had scattered leaving just the nice aromatics on the wind. 

I've often felt,  rightly or wrongly,  that the health problems of the forests of the pacific northwest are due to the lack of period burn offs of dead falls, debris and similar stuff.

It also explains why the wildfires go totally out of control- too much fuel

Yep. It's particularly more interesting with pine forests in that the trees become fully involved but while scorched are overall unharmed. 

The pine needles burn off quickly and the outer layer of bark burns off but the tree is not severely damaged. 

Gets rid of the briars and a lot of the longer growing underbrush.
