Texas are preparing to stay cooped up in their homes for days as an arctic blast is expected to bring sub-freezing temperatures this weekend. For many, that preparation means a trip to H-E-B

HEB is the main regional supermarket.

But some are worried it won’t be a usual trip to the store with aisles fully stocked. Popular joke account on X Evil MoPac commented on the phenomenon of Texans panic buying for the weather, telling followers: “you have ~31 hours to raid H-E-B of 30 gallons of milk, 40 dozen eggs, 85 pounds of flour, and 256 cans of Dr Pepper.”

One commenter said that’s the amount of time Ted Cruz has to get to Cancun while another said H-E-B looked “rather bleak” in the egg aisle. On X, others described the state of H-E-B as “the Hunger Games” and “worse than Thanksgiving.” But another declared that H-E-B “does more for Texans in emergencies than the state or most local governments,” even if shelves are looking emptier than usual.

The worst city for storm panics IME has been Atlanta. After one big snowstorm there in the 1980s, I toured the local Krogers. Beer, milk, bread, TP, and hot chocolate mix were all completely gone. But its always amusing to see how different regions react.

I'm going to assume that HEB bakeries have been cleaned out of fresh tortillas, and the meat section is surely short on ribs.

You mean the big snow storm that had much of the Atlanta region and north without power  due to the amount of freezing rain that preceded the snow and which pulled pine trees down  for the next 12 hours? We had a large stand of trees behind my house. Not quite a forest but a great number of acres. There must have been 50 trees down back there. Or parts of trees. Sounded like we were under what I expect H and I fires sound like. Ever 5 to 15 minutes, crack-crack-Boom!.

We either get something light or it's a major deal. The last big snow storm here was snow that didn't stick for about 3 hours of precipitation and then it all flash froze and we had a 1/4" layer of ice on every bit of pavement, bridge and surface street. Unless you had tire chains or a VERY light touch, you had a hard time.

If I had to guess it was 1987, perhaps 1988. Don't recall any freezing rain, but the 8 or so inches of snow was way more than Hotlanteans were ready for. I recall 75/85 becoming a parking lot and people just leaving their cars in the middle of the freeway.

There was a handful of guys with 4WD vehicles like me who got out on the roads and just kinda goofed around, but mostly just still as death for a couple of days. At that time I think I was living in Cobb County.

We had nasty freezing rain in the winter in 95 and 96.  I know, I worked in it.  Last night we got a real gully wash of a rainstorm.  Not complaining at all.

We had another one that was in 2014 that iced everything over. I was able to get around with tire chains on my deuce. I also had a set for my small daily driver.

Per the AJC we've had a bad ice/snow storm in '73, '83, '93 and 2014.

Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement on Texas’ constitutional right to defend and protect itself as President Joe Biden continues to attack Texas and refuse to perform his duties to secure the border.

"The Executive Branch of the United States has a constitutional duty to enforce federal laws protecting States, including immigration laws on the books right now," reads the statement. "President Biden has instructed his agencies to ignore federal statutes that mandate the detention of illegal immigrants. The failure of the Biden Administration to fulfill the duties imposed by Article IV, § 4 has triggered Article I, § 10, Clause 3, which reserves to this State the right of self-defense. For these reasons, I have already declared an invasion under Article I, § 10, Clause 3 to invoke Texas’s constitutional authority to defend and protect itself. That authority is the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary."

The tear down of a state's effort to stop a massive flow of illegals is not defendable. Absolutely absurd.

Governor Abbot has declared an invasion which trumps the Supreme Court, so we shall see where this goes:

The last time Texas claimed something similar, it didn't work out well for them.

Unfortunately, the letter of the law is on the Biden Administration's side in this case.  The Federal government has jurisdiction over the border and the Border Patrol by law has unrestricted access to the border which includes removing barriers to that access.  Abbott's political theatre is playing well, but the real solution is to replace the curretn Administration with one that will secure the border as it should.

Biden could federalize the Texas national guard, but he cannot federalize the Texas state guard. One workaround is to draft members of the Texas state guard instead.  They might counter this by identifying as female and thereby being exempt from the draft.

What a strange world.

Discharge the NG soldiers at the border from the Guard and enroll them as state police officers.

By circumventing those laws and violating them they have abdicated that power.
