Detonable Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 What kind of weapon is being fired in the early par of the video? Is it some sort of grenade launcher? It looked like they went to the smoke marker, maybe for air support? Trying to outrun the locals while wearing helmets and armor seems like it would have a low probability of success. Maybe they were trying to reach friendly troops? Could they just lie on the floor of the car and hit the gas and hope not to hit a tree?

Maybe they were trying to reach friendly troops? Could they just lie on the floor of the car and hit the gas and hope not to hit a tree?I think they were trying to reach the bushes to have cover, as they were on open place while not able to see attackers (who were, i think, very limited in number but because of this advantage just shoot operatives one by one). They were unable to drop armor quickly as it is integrated with communication equipment and ammunition bags - it will leave them without communications and weapons.Yes seems like they were able to speed out of ambush on early stage, but seems like initially enemy fire was not worrying them too much (probably only one man shooting at them) and only then all ISIS group came.
Roman Alymov Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 One of Rus experts take out of this video (in Rus). General idea - the only mistake of Americans was getting into this situation. All their actions during engagement were correct, professional and brave, but outcome was predefined. And it was not ambush but engagement that went wrong after locals flee and left USians alone against enemy

Roman Alymov Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Interesting US side calling it ambush, while as for me it was engagement surprise for both sides
Stuart Galbraith Posted November 11, 2021 Posted November 11, 2021 So finally it seems the truth of what happened in Tongo Tongo has been revealed, and it seems parts of the US Army was lying through its teeth. https://abcnews.go.com/International/abc-news-documentary-challenges-pentagons-claims-rogue-green/story?id=80695861&cid=referral_taboola_feed Four Americans gunned down in a withering, four-hour firefight in the Sahara -- part of a 10-man Green Beret team said to have gone rogue and been ambushed by ISIS while hunting down a top terrorist to "capture or kill" -- were ill-prepared, poorly trained and "not indicative" of their high-performing peers on the continent, U.S. military officials said. And in the strangest twist of all, they had been trying to locate an American aid worker who was being held hostage by the terrorist commander they were trying to kill. That story, as presented by the Pentagon, sounded like an outlandish tale -- but it was all offered as fact by U.S. generals whose stiff uniforms sparkled with the glint of their stars and ribbons as they sat in the Pentagon's press room in the spring of 2018. Yet almost none of the major allegations made public that day by United States Africa Command's (AFRICOM) top two generals against Operational Detachment-Alpha 3212 -- the team of special operations soldiers attacked by ISIS on Oct. 4, 2017, in Tongo Tongo, Niger -- turned out to be true, according to an extensive ABC News investigation. The results of ABC News' three-year investigation into what happened at Tongo Tongo are revealed in the new documentary feature, "3212 UN-REDACTED," coming to Hulu on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The official story presented to the public and to the families of the four American soldiers killed outside the tiny village in the Sahel region of Africa was ultimately laid out in a highly redacted 268-page report by AFRICOM, which was handed in binders to the grieving relatives almost two years after they buried their loved ones.
