Brian Kennedy Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I think it's silly to get worked up about anything anybody says on the Internet, but as one of the longest-standing members on this grate sight, I remember a time when we had an all-powerful and benevolent(?) MODERATOR who would slap down anybody who was being a douchebag, and I remember that it was a time of much more enjoyable conversation/debate/flame wars/etc. This is 1000 percent not me bitching about anything anyone's said to me or whatever -- frankly, in the absence of a [not going to type it again] I've started being a lot more of a prick too, and I think a lot of other old-timers here have probably lapsed into the same behavior. I remember that we've banned people before for posting stuff that's similar to what a lot of current members (again, including me) have recently posted. I would like to propose that this grate sight is suffering a bit in the absence of [again not gonna type it]. Thoughts?
Josh Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Agreed, and also guilty of lapsing when discussing domestic US politics.
sunday Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Agree very much, and another one that pleads guilty (with some mitigating circumstances).
Skywalkre Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) This is something I'm curious about as well. What would have caused intervention years ago is just ignored now. Do we even still have a MODERATOR? Is it someone new? Is TN effectively just in the hands of the other mods now? Edited June 14, 2017 by Skywalkre
Brian Kennedy Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) I was a mod around 2009 or so and never did anything and just slacked off, so the blame is on me as well. But we used to have some very good ones. I also could never figure out who the super-aggressive mods (which made this sight grate) were Edited June 14, 2017 by Brian Kennedy
Brian Kennedy Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 There's also the counter-argument that the AFV part of the forum is still world-class (I never post there because I never have anything intelligent enough to contribute) so maybe the rest is just gravy.
Brian Kennedy Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 You know, I'm just gonna put it out there -- there was a thing where we banned Tony Evans (which I could never figure out) and then everything kind of collapsed. That was back in the days when people took pride in using their real names to post (not that I'm criticizing anyone who doesn't).
DKTanker Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I think the passing of Geoff has had a lasting detrimental effect on the site in general.
Corinthian Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 frankly, in the absence of a [not going to type it again] I've started being a lot more of a prick too, and I think a lot of other old-timers here have probably lapsed into the same behavior. Shut up, just quit whining you bitch. ;) (triple winking smiley with following explanation in case that joke flew over your head )
rmgill Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Well, the Moderator rules used to be more stringently enforced vis a vis ad hominem. Then the enforcement started slipping for some but not for others. Then some got perma-banned while other's infractions were ignored. Then several of those who were permanently banned had their sentences commuted.
Skywalkre Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Well, the Moderator rules used to be more stringently enforced vis a vis ad hominem. Then the enforcement started slipping for some but not for others. Then some got perma-banned while other's infractions were ignored. Then several of those who were permanently banned had their sentences commuted. What concerns me is the above and why I'm curious about what happened to MODERATOR. TN is heavily American in active users and just like politics in this country this website is also getting more polarized. I've seen the same above, inconsistent handling of issues, and to me some of these have come across that the instigator in question is in the 'favored' group and likely got off as such. Just an observation. Hopefully I'm completely off base.
mnm Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) I heard Tomas say that to him he does look like a seriously inflamed pussy. Tomas said it, mind you!!! Edited June 14, 2017 by mnm
sunday Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 The "flaming vagina" comment was written by a Marine, not by Tomas...
Mike Steele Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) My 2₵. Yes the quality of moderation has slipped. Its been slipping for a while, longer than is mentioned here. Well, the Moderator rules used to be more stringently enforced vis a vis ad hominem. Then the enforcement started slipping for some but not for others. Then some got perma-banned while other's infractions were ignored. Then several of those who were permanently banned had their sentences commuted.(I used Ryans points because they were handy) All the above is true, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it. I have my own horror stories to tell, and will gladly tell them if people want to hear them (PM me) But yes Brian is in fact correct (odd that we should agree) But yes there is a problem, and it needs fixing. How to fix it? More important is the history. Edited June 14, 2017 by Mike Steele
Stuart Galbraith Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Id like to see Tomas as a moderator. He would keep everyone in order with the shark tank.
Tim the Tank Nut Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 in the "olde days" the forum was self moderating, tooThere was more camaraderie than there is now.People that have mingled at an I&I don't post as aggressively to each other
Stuart Galbraith Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 I dont know, I can recall back to 1998, and dont remember it much different than now. Maybe there was more posting then, but there was more banning's too.

X-Files Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 The guy´s mind is otherwise occupied... It'd be cathartic for him, having reign to freely go WWF on transgressors. TOMAS FOR FFZ MODERATOR

Just passin' thru, maybe long enough to be Judge Tomas' first perma-band (that ought to garner him a metric shitload of votes).
