Murph
Other than the mobo issue, I really, really like this 8 core Ryzen 1700 system. It is fast, allows good multitasking, and paired with 32gb of Flare X ram at 2400 is speedy enough for my purposes. I don't overclock, so that it a non issue. The ASUS GTX 1060 6gb OC card is really a great card as well. No regrets in getting it either. I might eventually replace it with the 1070 version, but that will be next year. Murph
A guy on the Gigabyte boards suggested checking power settings, and he said that on his Skylake build this setting caused BSOD issues. His suggestion: I did this and it booted into A0 right away. Could this be the fix? I am praying that it is. right click on the start button, select power options. On the right you will see Additional power settings, click on that. on the left click on choose what the power buttons do. At the top you will see some blue text that says change settings that are currently unavailable, click on that. At the bottom remove the check from the box that says turn on fast startup, and save changes.
Murph
Can it have been so simple? Booted up this morning after a nights shutdown, and it went right to Code A0. It can not be that simple, or can it? EDIT: Nope, BSOD. AETiglathPZ
Well, the old system is on its last legs, even though an upgrade to 8 gb of ram made it quicker. But I cannot play the newest games on it, so I have saved for the last seven months and now have enough to build. As I get more money, I will add a second ASUS 1440p monitor. It comes in right at $1850.00 I will also add an SSD (Samsung or Crucial 1 TB) later as well for fast storage. The M.2 NVME drive is for a boot drive, not storage. I am going to add this as well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JJM281I/ref=twister_B013WNHTR8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Man, solid build. Do you have a spare power supply that can power that machine? Could be a bad power supply that passed QC put fails under certain conditions. My main gamer was acting up awhile ago, driver crashing, freezing, goes dark. I thought it was motherboard or video card.Replaced the 5 year Antec 650 Earthwatts with a 500 Coolmaster power supply and that fixed it. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171106Using the CM for my rebuilds since Microcenter sells them $35, $30 on sale and only doing single card builds. Murph
PSU is solid, I have traced it down to a motherboard problem. The mother of a board goes into a hybrid shutdown, no POST beep, so the way to make it work is to reboot immediately after the first boot up. After that it is solid. I am replacing the mother of a board either this weekend or next with an ASUS Crosshair VI Hero board. Gigabyte customer support sucks @ss, and they apparently don't care to even contact me after I filed a request for RMA. Also on the PSU the EVGA site claims that I only need a 450-500 watt PSU for this build!
nabqrules
Murph I know you are waiting on getting a Crosshair VI but just a heads up, don't update the bios on your gigabyte board just yet if you get a prompt for it.. http://forum.gigabyte.us/thread/1542/original-am4-beta-bios-thread?page=24 Edited September 1, 2017 by nabqrules
Murph
Oops, I updated to F5 a couple of days ago. It is a Gaming K7, and I have not seen any change so far. I got the Crosshair VI this morning, and it is going in tomorrow. I am sick of this board, just sick and I had such high hopes.
Murph
Updated the motherboard, and this thing FLIES! Photoshop opens in 2 seconds compared to 10+ under the Gigabyte motherboard. The whole system seems to be running faster and better for whatever reason. Amazing. CPU-Z shows an upgrade from 1584 multicore to 3854! Things are just snappier, and more responsive at this point. It had to be a really bad motherboard. I hope that Gigabyte fixes it on RMA. I finally was able to get them to respond.

Murph
I played games all afternoon, and it looks like the motherboard change might have been the "Right Thing", so far. I am going to send in the Gigabyte motherboard, and I want to thank you for letting me know about the F5 BIOS problem. If they had smoked my processor through their carelessness, then Gigabyte would be asked to get me a new processor. After it gets back (or is replaced), I will get with you. The guy I spoke with yesterday said that it sounded like bad capacitors.
nabqrules
The performance boost you got with the switch is huge. That's really shows how bad that motherboard was. Most of these manufacturers either flash/repair bios or send out another motherboard. I think the way the repair depots work they may end up switching it out. Murph
So now if Gigabyte fixes or replaces the board with one that works, I might possibly build a Ryzen 5 1600 system for the kids to play games on downstairs. Modest specs, 16 gb 2400 ram, 500 gb ssd, 1 tb Western Digital Blue 7200 rpm and an Nvidia 1060 card or Radeon 580 card of some flavor, with a 650 watt PSU. I'll use the TV as a monitor via HDMI. Or I might just get rid of it, it all depends on GIgabyte.
nabqrules
1600 is a nice CPU, also something to look if you go that route is get 3000mhz Ram. With Ryzen cpus, Ram speed actually has a noticeable impact on performance (this has not always been the case with memory clocks) On the builds I've done I've benchmarked before and after clocking the memory and there was an obvious change. Murph
Waiting on the RMA of the motherboard, but this system runs great now! Super fast, stable, and I love it. Bad motherboard goes away, and the computer just works. Amazing.
Murph
I LOVE THIS SYSTEM!!!! The Asus Crosshair Vi Hero motherboard is what did the trick, this thing SCREAMS! Now the next project upgrade is a GTX 1070 card, and a second ASUS 27" monitor. Then Trident RGB ram (32 or 64 gb). The next project after I get the RMA back is to think about building the kids a system for downstairs. But if they don't clean their rooms up, they get bupkis. Murph
Also I have recently started seeing code 40 showing up on the LED on the ASUS mobo, compared to the "normal" 24. I notice when 40 shows up I have issues with the keyboard. This morning I could not access the internet for love nor money till I rebooted. But I am not sure if it was a hardware issue or an ISP issue since the computer could see the network, it just could not get anything to load. Murph
I have the new monitor and it is nice. 2x 27" ASUS PB227Q monitors at 2560x1440. So far things are running fine, other than some minor software annoyances. Nothing like the motherboard disaster.
