Well, the old system is on its last legs, even though an upgrade to 8 gb of ram made it quicker. But I cannot play the newest games on it, so I have saved for the last seven months and now have enough to build. Specs:

I am transferring two hard drives from my current machine to the new one. As I get more money, I will add a second ASUS 1440p monitor. It comes in right at $1850.00 I will also add an SSD (Samsung or Crucial 1 TB) later as well for fast storage. The M.2 NVME drive is for a boot drive, not storage. Do yourself and the world a favor and Stop buying Nvidia Products already. Get a Polaris 580 / 570 / 580. You'll thank me so so much. Pascal is Maxwell and it WILL be obsoleted just like the 7 series before that. An no, i'm not a fanboy. Tech is what i do for a living. Nvidia rewrite how their cards handle DX 11 titles and its given them a leg Up. AMD has no where to go but UP.

I did not get the 580 since it draws as much power as the 1080ti card! If Vega had been available with reasonable power requirements I would have gotten one. I am not going to put a 1000 watt psu in just to feed Radeon.

No. It does not. THe reviewers have all done a SHITE job of reviewing the cards. Andand tech included. They are all either shilling NVidida or just don't care to do it right. Everyone knows the Polaris Cards are overvolted. And they use more power than they require.

Drop the voltage to 1030 starting in the middle & set the boost clock voltage @ like 1080. THen set 65C as your thermal throttle, and turn Chill on. Your power usage will be cut around 40%.

This is a reason AMD has these technologies come out, GPU's are NOT just drop it in and it works anymore. I run 2 RX 470's and i use as much power as the 1080 Ti. Thanks to Wattman and Radeon Chill. (AND i have the boost clocs set to 1280Mhz) SO 'm even slightly overclocked. Nvidia doesn't care about you, or any other consumer anymore. It's blatantly obvious and 90% of the tech community is in denial about it. In 3 years, Nvidia won't even roll out a mid performace card. They simply aren't interested. They will ONLY put out cards like the Titan and 1080Ti. So stop reading the corporate hype, and do yourself a favor. Nvidia is moving OUT of consumer GPU's.

I am not an overclocker, as the old timers know, if you can somehow destroy a computer, I have managed to do it. My next build will most likely be a Vega, provided it has reasonable linux support. Amd has done a poor job of Linux drivers on the RX cards. I am an AMD fanboy, and have been for years. This build is for stability, since I have become far less adventurous as I get older. I just ordered everything, and am now planning Linux Mint box #2 for the next build.

 

I think I might understand your post #4 in that the Radeon cards to perform decently have to be overclocked, and as such suck up vast amounts of power. Performance wise they all seem to be equivalents to a GTX 1060 card with 6 gb. I almost went with the RX 480, but decided in the end to go with the GTX 1060 till I can upgrade to a 1070/1080 card, unless VEGA comes out and does well. I also need something that works well with Photoshop.

 

Now my processor is the Ryzen 1700 which seems to be the sweet spot in the 8 cores. I plan on later upgrading with the Linux build to either the 1700x or the 1800x. I am hoping that AMD gets its act together RSN, so that I can do better. Ram compatability is getting better, but since i am building for stability rather than overclocking, I am being conservative in this build on the Ryzen.

Parts have shipped!!!!! Build on Saturday, and then all day Sunday setup and tweaking! I am so excited, my first new desktop build in almost 10 years. Eight cores of goodness, and 32 gb of ram! Plus a 27" 1440p monitor!

Oh.My.God! This thing is a beast. Five hours, and I have an 8 core/16 thread, 32gb monster. Boot to desktop is 29 seconds!!!!!

 

Update: Two BSODs on it (I think they are related to software conflicts/outdated drivers), but I installed Build 1703 (Creators update), and so far it is stable. Both crashes occurred under Steam, and the first after running the Unigine Heaven benchmark. This ASUS monitor is da bomb.

Too many BSODs, but what is strange is none of the error codes is the same, except for two instances of Kernel_Security_Check_Failure. I added Rise of the Tomb Raider to the system, and had Victoria spend most of the day just hammering the system, and it never BSOD'ed. I ran sfc /scannow a couple of times and no errors found. I ran chkdsk, verifier (Which caused the system to be unable to reboot into Windows), and cannot find something that is killing the system. Maybe it just needed to spend some time running to get stable? I updated everything, all the drivers, Winders, etc. Latest BIOS on the X370 board. Not sure what is going on.

F**K, F**K, F**K, it is a crash fest. BSODs every day, and I can't track the cause since each is a different hit. F**K. Drivers are updated, rolled back the Nvidia driver and that seemed to help a little, this troubleshooting is driving me nuts.

 

Update, it might have been my Epson CX7400 printer/printer driver which was killing my computer. I unplugged the printer, and removed the driver, so far.....

After Microsoft tech support, it crashed again, and again, so this morning I used DDU to completely remove the display drivers and reinstall. The system is fast, responsive, and nice, but if crashes hard at least once a day with a BSOD. I am still trouble shooting, hopefully this will fix the issues. The error codes started pointing towards a video driver over the last couple of days. It was so bad, I went to get a Radeon RX580, and there are none to be found anywhere! The cryptocurrency idiots have bought all of them. But when working the GTX 1060 from ASUS with this Asus PB227Q monitor is stunningly nice. Photoshop just is blazingly fast on this system. Having 32gb of ram is nice, and even though I could not afford the H110i water cooler right now, even with the stock cooler playing games like Civilization V, VI, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Ghost Recon it never gets above 38 degrees C with the stock air cooler!!!! My oldest daughter wants to use it in preference to her computer, and playstation to play games on. I just ran Unigine's Heaven Benchmark and went from a low of 42fps to a high of 127 fps. Average 65 fps at 1440p. I used DDU to remove the old display drivers, and rip them out of registry, and so far, so good.....

Yes, I downgraded some of the components to go for stability and compatability rather than speed. After the DDU and ripping the video drivers out by the roots, so far the system is stable. Grrrrrrrr. Nvidia had to make it stupid, and instead of removing the older drivers, just added new ones alongside the old ones which created a problem. Stupid programming.

That's good to hear. If this doesn't work, I'd suggest downloading memtest (7.2) and burning it to disc and booting that and testing ram. Though from the sounds of it, lets hope it was only drivers.

on the link click on Image for creating bootable CD (ISO format) in order to download the iso for memtest. Now part of this it may just end up confirming your memory and slots are ok. Now with 32GB of ram it will take several hours for you to test. You will have to use it to boot at startup so it'll tie up your machine for a while.

Also do another check and see if there's another bios update for your board. They are doing a lot of updates so it's possible there might be another one available.

The latest is a Beta bios, but I will grab it as soon as I can. Thanks for the memtest, it showed all ok. I did DDU on the video card again, and while it was uninstalled and I was in VGA mode, used CCleaner, and ripped everything out by the roots, before re-installing. I DID NOT install the GE Force experience, 3d drivers, or the sound files. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
