And they have guns too! I nearly coughed up my tea when I saw Wallander pull out a gun.

And then he later drops it in a cafe where he was drinking.

I had to remind myself that the asshattery with guns I was seeing by 'Swedish' police in both versions was just TV shows and that I hoped that the Police were more competent than that in Sweden with firearms.

No such luck, I'm afraid.

We have our share of bumbling idiots in the police force too. And even if they are few they certainly get noticed.

Estonia turns 100 years! Although not technically a Nordic country, it has close ties to them, particularly Finland ^_^

Congrats from the first 100 years \o/

In defense of the Swedish lady cop, you guys know it is a bitch to pull one´s pants up or down in a restroom stall if you are carrying any kind of holsters in your belt, and sometimes you don´t want pricey equipment to hit THAT floor. Also, sometimes you have a bowel relief so epic and pleasant that it kinda dumbs you down :D

The gun goes in the cradle your pants make after you've dropped trousers.

best cop breakfast I have ever seen has been in Hungary near Lake Balaton: fried fish fresh from the lake and a beer. Yes there is zero promille alcohol on the roads in Hungary. ^_^

Oh actually a lot of people go to Ikea for the restaurant actually. cakes, coffee, cinnamon buns, köttbullar... and don't buy any furniture.

poor Estonia. :( :( Well maybe they should change their flag to cruciform design first?

another take on the rather complicated nordic-scandinavian-baltic thing

Thanks, so I have just been branded as one of "the nerdiest of geography nerds" because I actually do use "Finnoscandia". Well, I guess the price to pay for taking geography as a main specialization course at highschool. :o

I don`t know how accurate this is but when I went to school many years ago i was taught that Scandinavia originally was a strictly geographical term. Any country where all or part of its territory are part of the scandinavian mountain range ( Skanderna in swedish) is a scandinavian country. Part of it is today submerged under the North Sea but then rises again and make up part of Denmark (Jutland).

The Estonian coat of arms (the three lions) is a direct copy of the Danish coat of arms, which is awfully decent of them, I think. The Danish rule in Estonia was fairly brief.

But there is a nice symmetry there, after all, since according to tradition the Danish flag supposedly dropped from the sky when the Danes were pillaging crusading in Estonia, and since the banner led the army to victory, it was henceforth adopted as the national flag by King Valdemar.

Congratulations, Estonia!!

There's a place in Tallinn a bit down the hill from the Russian cathedral that claims that it happened "exactly here". ;)

I used 'Vikingland'. Which is undoubtedly terribly unfair, but not wholly inaccurate either.

Congrats to Estonia. Thats one country I hope to visit someday.

No Vikings in Finland, except maybe in Åland. :)

Although I suppose it depends on how you define 'viking', Finnic tribes were no strangers to seaborne raiding either. "Viking era" in the Barents sea continued into 15th century.

And Estonians of the Saaremaa were legendary raiders and scourge of the Baltic.

Funny bit: city of Oulu has branded itself as "Capital of Northern Scandinavia" even though it is geographically not in Scandinavia. But maybe they see Scandinavia as a colony for them to rule over...?

This is Finland: After Trump and Putin leave, the president heads across the street for a drink

After Mondays summit, president Sauli Niinistö of Finland went to a bar. Just like anyone would after a hard days work.

Heta Hassinen HS

Julkaistu: 19.7. 9:37 , Päivitetty: 19.7. 10:29

The difference between Finnish president and his American and Russian counterparts became quite clear on Monday evening.

After the motorcades of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had left for the airport, president Sauli Niinistö was spotted enjoying a drink in public with his top aides.

A picture circulated on social media showed the president sitting at a terrace table of a bar within shouting distance of the presidential palace.

Communications Director to the President Katri Makkonen says that people around the table were from the presidential cabinet.

It was an informal moment between the president and his cabinet after a long day in a gentle summer evening. That is all there is to comment, Makkonen told HS.

Presidents Trump and Putin are usually seen with large numbers of security personnel around them. In Finland on the other hand, the president gets to move around more freely.

the world would be a much better place if POTUS could just go to a pub in DeeCee or the Президент Российской Федерации just go for a coffee on the red square.
