Stuart Galbraith Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 https://cosmosmagazine.com/archaeology/ancient-human-artefacts-recovered-from-norway-s-iceThe melting of the long-frozen snow and ice in Norway, and elsewhere around the world, has already yielded numerous ancient artifacts, from hunting tools to goat-skin leggings, shoes, and even Otzi the Iceman, the remains of a man who lived more than 5,000 years ago. Now archaeologists have recovered an ancient ski complete with its binding, believed to date back some 1,300 years.NRK reports that the wooden ski, which measures 172 centimeters long and 14.5 centimeters wide, was discovered in a glacier in what’s now Reinheimen National Park in the mountains of Lesja in Oppland. Incredibly, even the leather binding, which was mounted on a raised portion in the middle of the ski, was still well-preserved. Historians have long known that Norwegians were skiing more than a thousand years ago, and now they have the proof. https://cosmosmagazine.com/archaeology/ancient-human-artefacts-recovered-from-norway-s-iceMelting ice deposits in Norway have revealed over 2000 human artefacts, some dating as back as 4000 BCE, allowing archaeologists to reconstruct a detailed picture of life in the far north of Europe.In a paper published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, a team led by James Barrett of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge, UK, report radiocarbon dating of 153 of the finds, including arrows, tools, skis, rags, horse gear and “scaring sticks” – poles used in the hunting of reindeer.The items were all recovered from melting ice patches in the region of Jotunheimen and the surrounding mountain areas of Oppland.
Yama Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 So today is date for Finland's presidential elections. As Finland has changed to full parliamentary system, president has little power in internal affairs but remains leading figure in foreign politics.However, the elections are not seen as particularly thrilling as incumbent president Sauli Niinistö is very popular and most polls have showed him getting over 50% of the first round vote. Curious feature of the election is that ruling Centre party's candidate has scored terribly in polls and really bad result might be humilating for the PM and his party even if it has relatively little actual effect on government.
Stuart Galbraith Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 God is Dead!http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/01/28/ikea-founder-ingvar-kamprad-dies-aged-91/ Ingvar Kamprad, the billionaire founder of flat-pack furniture retailer Ikea, has died at his home in southern Sweden following a short illness at the age of 91. Mr Kamprad started the chain in 1943 when he was aged just 17 and it has since grown to generate revenues of more than €38bn (£33bn) from 412 stores in 49 countries.Torbjörn Lööf, chief executive of Inter Ikea Group, said: “We are deeply saddened by Ingvar’s passing. We will remember his dedication and commitment to always side with the many people. To never give up, always try to become better and lead by example.”
Ivanhoe Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Don't be ashamed, as soon as we all read "Ikea" and "dead" we went there;

Well, not much excitement, President won with a landslide 63% of the votes and there won't be a second round.PM's candidate got pathetic 4%...
toysoldier Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I just thought of a SNL skit about a voting line in Finland where everybody gets distracted by a very nimble squirrel jumping from tree to tree without making any snow fall. The station staff comes out to see why people doesn't come in to vote, and gets distracted as well. Some pull out coffee thermos. When finally the squirrel fells some snow, everybody returns to the "Thrilling Finnish Election", as it reads in a chrismassy CGI signs that appears over the waiting line. Not a word spoken, except at the end, a close shot of the squirrel cursing "Perkele!".I don't know, it just came to me

Yama Posted January 30, 2018 Author Posted January 30, 2018 Putin will be hard pressed to best Niinistö's result - not only he scored crushalicious nationwide victory, he won every single county, even other candidates hometowns!
toysoldier Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Don't worry, Putin can into 140%. Putin can into wining elections in other countries, we are told.
Stuart Galbraith Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 Just your old Friendly Neighbourhood KGB looking after you citizen. Why risk the strain of thinking whom to vote for, when we can do it for you wholesale? 140 percent wholesale.
Stuart Galbraith Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 And they have guns too! I nearly coughed up my tea when I saw Wallander pull out a gun.
DougRichards Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 And they have guns too! I nearly coughed up my tea when I saw Wallander pull out a gun. The original Wallander or the Kenneth Branagh version?
Stuart Galbraith Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 Both of them. The man must have popped more perps than Clint Eastwood. Kind of disappointing really, Blood Eagling suspects would probably fit better with the Nordic Noir vibe.
Mike Steele Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 LOL, Swedish Police. Does she make a good samich?
Murph Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 ROTFLMAO! LOL, Swedish Police. Does she make a good samich?
NickM Posted February 3, 2018 Posted February 3, 2018 LOL, Swedish Police.Lordy! I've seen some pics of police dog bites --they look nearly as bad as some shark bites I've seen pics of.
Stuart Galbraith Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 I really dont want to see the assembly manual for that one.
MiloMorai Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 I really dont want to see the assembly manual for that one. The question is why does Mr King have those items?
rmgill Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 And they have guns too! I nearly coughed up my tea when I saw Wallander pull out a gun. And then he later drops it in a cafe where he was drinking. I had to remind myself that the asshattery with guns I was seeing by 'Swedish' police in both versions was just TV shows and that I hoped that the Police were more competent than that in Sweden with firearms.

No such luck, I'm afraid. https://www.thelocal.se/20110919/36220 https://www.thelocal.se/20130904/50060 We have our share of bumbling idiots in the police force too. And even if they are few they certainly get noticed.
