Allan W
I've decided its time for a new computer. Looking at a high powered gaming rig. I'm considering the following, but I am also open to a custom build. Any input welcome! NCIX Rogue X Tier 3: http://pc.ncix.com/ncixpc_new/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=98D76EE9-DF5C-4A89-BF7180FB1645CC9B-7205316 NCIX Impact Hydro Tier 2: http://pc.ncix.com/ncixpc_new/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=9783C2FB-ACA3-427E-88BB68E4715EB528-7205386 NCIX Gigabyte Phoenix Tier 3: http://pc.ncix.com/ncixpc_new/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=0CD47735-8A70-46EF-9EA3BD9D6FA7630A-7205393 NCIX is a local computer shop I've bought my last 3 computers from. I like and I trust them.
Ivanhoe
I'm not a gamer so can't help with any of that, but it looks like those high-end mobos have USB 3.1 and at least one Type C port, which is good.
Justin
I doubt you'd be sad with any of them, they are all pretty high end. I'm not a fan of corsair stuff as I've had to RMA so much of it. The ssds was a good way to go. The one with the power supply of 650w I might bump that up. You can probably find an online tool to figure out your wattage. Those rm series are designed to run silent up to a certain power level which is nice. I am really a fan of asus stuff. I do like the corsair cases. That broadwell is probably huge diminishing returns for gaming just because many won't be optimized for it. I'm sure others will be along to tell you that you can build it cheaper yourself but if you are happy that's all that matters.
sunday
This is an interesting comparison tool, that benchmarks PC builds according to their purpose, like gaming rigs, workstations, and so on. Last time I used it, it was pretty up to date about recent hardware innovations. http://www.userbenchmark.com/PCBuilder I tried to put the Rogue X build in the tool, and this is the result:http://www.userbenchmark.com/PCBuilder/Custom/S46625-M178732.158352.204072.156966.89267vsS0-M?tab=MBD Edited February 15, 2017 by sunday
Allan W
Interesting. The Rogue X is the one I am leaning towards at the moment.
lucklucky
If you can, wait until the AMD Ryzen is in the market the rumor is that might force Intel prices down.
sunday
Interesting. The Rogue X is the one I am leaning towards at the moment. The Value row should be considered. For instance, a 5TB WD Black seems a better choice, value-wise. Same could be said of a Nvidia GTX1080. Comparison with a new setup using those variations: http://www.userbenchmark.com/PCBuilder/Custom/S46625-M178732.158352.204072.156966.89267vsS46625-M178732.137575.204072.41116.89267?tab=HDD While losing a bit of gaming performance, the resulting system is much cheaper. Allan W
I agree with the GTX1080 in place of the Triton, but I would stick with the 2tb Firecuda drive rather than the 5tb WD Black. I've got lots of external drive space. Great suggestions!

GregShaw
I'll probably put together a Hackintosh this spring. I'll start putting together a parts list soon, and set it up as a dual boot Win10 and OS X, maybe even Linux if I'm feeling bored. https://www.tonymacx86.com/
lucklucky
In my professional area -3D model and animation - everyone that is in Mac is moving to Windows due to dismal support and lack of hardware updates from Apple. GregShaw
Yep, Apple has done a crappy job of hardware updates for nearly a decade. IOS rules the roost, and the Macbook Pro was best in class for a long time so they neglected everything else. I still prefer OS X over Win10, but not by as much, Apple dumbing down the OS since 10.6.8 hasn't been the right direction for the Pro users. The fact that I can make a Hackintosh for < $1000 that clobbers anything Apple offers as a desktop isn't a complement to Apple's hardware design. Allan W
Trying to decide on a video card. Right now, the leading candidates are: ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 ROG Strix 1607/1733 MHz 8GB GDDR5X (air cooled) and MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Sea Hawk X (water cooled) Anyone have any input on which one i should go for? The MSI card is CA$1100.00 vs CA$930.00 for the air cooled ASUS card.
Ssnake
How sensitive do you react to noise?Overall I've heard better things about Asus than MSI but that may not apply in this case.

Looking at the results on this article, both cards are more or less equal, raw performance-wise, but the Sea Hawk looks like a pretty sweet card, from the noise, and temperature points of view. Regardless of the card you buy, please use three monitors in panoramic setup, and post pics. If you are using liquid cooling in the CPU, some cases could not accept some GPU liquid cooling setups, but the shop you selected should be able to find a compatible case. Murph
I am working a new system as well. I need about $2,000 for what I want to build. But it is going to last me another 10 years like the current build.
Murph
Monitors; I need reasonable price, and decent specs. While I want dual 4k, I think my budget will only allow dual 1080p. I like the offerings from ASUS, Dell, and Samsung in the 24-28" range. Suggestions? Also I am looking at either a GTX 1060 6 gb card, or the Radeon RX 480 XFX GTR 8gb edition. I would like a 1070 card, but I have to cut back somewhere. I am somewhat concerned with the power draw of the RX 480, but AMD seems to have a fix. Processor is definately going to be an 8 core AMD Ryzen, either the 1700 or 1700X. Ram has dropped from 64 gb to 16 gb (I'd like 32gb), with maybe a Western Digital M.2 NVME 512 gb drive as primary, and a 4 gb WD Blue or Black caviar as storage. Murph
And how did it turn out? Did your new system arrive, and does it work well?
Murph
Well Best Buy had a great deal on laptops and so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on Sarah's college laptop. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-spectre-x360-2-in-1-15-6-4k-ultra-hd-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-hp-finish-in-dark-ash-silver/6188321.p?skuId=6188321 They had this one on sale for $1099 for about three days and sold out. I made the girls a deal, that they got a new laptop when they entered High School (not a top of the line one), and then when they are ready to go to college, I would save up and get them a really good laptop that will last them for the four years of college. So I got it, a mouse, external 2 tb Western Digital Hard drive, a USB A to USB C dongle, and Office student as a bundle along with the three year warranty, so I think I got a good deal, and she is set up with a great laptop. Rickard N
I'm thinking of replacing my gaming machine and since I've got a decent load of disks in it I'm considering trying to move them to the new machine. What are the odds that it will work? /R - too lazy to reinstall
Tim the Tank Nut
just taking the hard drive from the old machine and adding it to the new one as an extra, probably will work mostly. Depends on the game, too Moving files over via ethernet connection seems less likely to work although it will work for Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (notoriously hard to make work on newer systems)
Murph
I did that, moved two drives to my current system.
