P.S. I expect something like this in Russia soon. For years, illegal self-employed cabs are called “Shahid-taxi” here (as they are mostly driven my Central Asian illegal migrants with basic driving skills, poor knowledge of the city and are in poor technical shape) – so we got all components ready in place….

So far, 10 killed. Images and videos in the link below.

A suspected bomb blast inside a car of the St. Petersburg Metro system has resulted in casualties among passengers. The entire transit system is shut down as bomb squads and rescuers respond to the emergency.
The explosion happened as the train was travelling between the stations Tekhnologichesky Institut and Sennaya Ploshchad of the St. Petersburg Metro, the National Antiterrorism Committee confirmed.

Images posted on social media show bodies lying next to the damaged car, with blood apparently spilt on a bench.

The St. Petersburg governor’s office said there were as many as 50 victims in the incident, including 10 fatalities. Two of the injured have been taken for surgery while two others are being prepared for operation.

The city healthcare committee said 25 people have been brought to hospital in the wake of the blast, including one child.

Russian President Vladimir Putin commented that “The causes of this event have not been determined yet, so it’s too early to talk about [possible causes]. The investigation will show. Certainly, we will consider all possibilities: common, criminal, but first of all of a terrorist nature.”

All Metro stations are closed to passengers. Commuters were evacuated from the subway within about an hour of the first reports of the blast coming in.

Security has been increased in St. Petersburg over concerns of a potential follow-up attack, the National Antiterrorism Committee said.

Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature for users in St Petersburg. It allows people to let friends and family know that they are OK during a disaster or dangerous situation.

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA – At least 10 people were killed in explosions in two train carriages at metro stations in St. Petersburg on Monday, Russian authorities said.

The Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source as saying one of the blasts was caused by a bomb filled with shrapnel.

President Vladimir Putin, who was in St. Petersburg for a meeting with Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko, said the cause of the blasts was not yet clear and efforts were under way to find out. He said he was considering all possibilities including terrorism.

A Reuters witness saw eight ambulances near the Sennaya Ploshchad metro station.

Video showed injured people lying bleeding on a platform, some being treated by emergency services. Others ran away from the platform amid clouds of smoke.

A huge whole was blasted in the side of one carriage with mangled metal wreckage strewn around the platform. Passengers were seen hammering at the windows of one closed carriage.

Authorities closed all St. Petersburg metro stations. The Moscow metro said it was taking unspecified additional security measures in case of an attack there.

Russia has been the target of attacks by Chechen militants in past years. Chechen rebel leaders have frequently threatened further attacks.

At least 38 people were killed in 2010 when two female suicide bombers detonated bombs on packed Moscow metro trains.

Over 330 people, half of them children, were killed in 2004 when police stormed a school in southern Russia after a hostage taking by islamist militants. In 2002, 120 hostages were killed when police stormed a Moscow theatre to end another hostage taking.

Putin, as prime minister, launched a 1999 campaign to crush a separatist government in the muslim southern region of Chechnya, and as president continued a hard line in suppressing rebellion.

Following the reports, the Moscow metro also announced that it is “taking additional security measures” as required by law in such situations, according to the network’s official Twitter account.

Russia beefed up its security over the holiday period in the wake of the attack on the Berlin Christmas market that killed 12.

Authorities placed heavy trucks at road intersections to block off areas where public festivities were taking place after the attack in the German capital that was claimed by the Islamic State group.

Russia has intervened militarily to bolster Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces in September 2015, turning the tables on the battlefield just as rebel forces were strengthening their hold on key areas.

Russian bombardments helped the regime retake rebel areas in the east of the northern city of Aleppo after four years of fighting.

More than 310,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict broke out in March 2011 with protests against Assad’s rule.

My condolences, and good thing the second bomb failed. Even so the death toll is bad enough.

Thank you, yes it seems like it was very timely find – the station where IED was found (next to one were explosion happened) was closed just 3 minutes prior to explosion on another station, so seems like it was attempt of coordinated terror act prevented by security (or just careful citizens)

This photo is circulating in media, but without official confirmation - IMHO too iconic for real terrorist

Suspect from this photo turned up to police to declare he is not involved in this incident

Wait... So the second bomb was found before the explosion already? Good on whoever noticed, I assumed it failed to go off and was noticed afterwards. Too bad one slipped through...

(Shades of the Tokio sarin attack - IIRC one suspect package was also found before the attack happened).

That man has been ID'd by at least one media outlet as Maxim Arishev from Kazakhstan. Reports are conflicting as to whether he was a suicide bomber.

It was hidden in regular shoulder-carried black leather bag. As now Akbarzhon Jalilov is officially confirmed to be both suicide bomber and man who left the bag in station corridor (https://www.bfm.ru/news/350989 ), seems like it was combination of suicide attack and planted IED attack by one person (who was living in Russia for last 6 years – and, taking into consideration he was only 22, arrived here very young)

More about this man: he is retired VDV officer (Capitan), veteran of Chechen war. Ethnic Russian converted to Islam. Yesterday he flew from StPete to Moscow without any problems, but today passengers of another plane he boarded in Moscow refused to fly with him, so air company asked him out and returned money for ticket. Human stupidity got no borders….

Today few suspects arrested in StPeterburg flat. IED similar to ones used in Subway bombing found in this flat.

In separate development, couple of days ago in Astrakhan (Caspian Sea port on Volga) road police patrol was called in the night in to fill in the documents following minor road incident on remote street. While two officers were filling in the papers, they were shot dead in their car, their weapons stolen - all actions were captured by CCTV in police car

All incident was staged to get officer's weapons. Today suspects were caught by NatGuard roadblock - in resulting firefight four men killed, two more arrested. Three servicemen injured

ISIS claimed it was their action.

Today in central Rostov-on-Don, hear school building, early in the morning unknown man left flashlight on the sidewalk. Street cleaner took it and pressed button - as result he lost right lap and finger on left hand, plus other injuries

In following search operation, two more flashlights were found planted in other locations - but this time there were no IRDs inside
